Rumours of Lindsey leaving the band?

The band members think he's bluffing so they don't yield and he goes out the door; everyone has to find a last minute substitution(s) for Lindsey on this goddamn tour and the rest is history.
Of course this is just a possible scenario, but it's consistent with the band's power play dynamics. I should write fanfictions.

Well CNN reports that it had to do with the music for the tour:

The representative would not provide any further details as to what led to his departure. A source close to the band told CNN that the split was "over musical differences regarding the tour." A representative for Buckingham referred questions to the band.

The article also ends with this:

Buckingham also spoke to CNN about his widely publicized breakup with Nicks, which took place while the band was recording Rumours.
"There was a time when I was certainly waiting for her to come back and she never did," Buckingham said. "Then I moved on eventually, it took a long time."

And it's sort of interesting that ever since the time he finally gave up that she would ever come back (late 90s) she's been less into FM, IMHO.
