13 years since their last studio album. That's kind of hard to fathom. A lot of wasted time there from a band perspective, but at least we've gotten numerous solo projects from Stevie and Lindsey along the way. The three writers are all guilty of "band neglect". Citing Lindsey bailing in '87, Christine going on a 16yr hiatus, or Stevie not wanting to get on board this time around to make a new record. I suppose we have to be grateful that they all just haven't ridden off into the sunset, never to be heard from again in any aspect. That being said, I'd really hope to hear one more studio recording of this very creative and intriguing "five people force". Pleeeease!

I agree with you that all three songwriters have neglected the band on some level, really, since the end of the Tusk tour. Once the solo projects began, it became very clear that the ambition for the band died amongst the songwriters (not so much with John/Mick...especially Mick).

My theory has always been that what happened to the five individuals between 1975-1980 was so massive and personally draining that there was never going to be any potential for the Rumours line-up of Fleetwood Mac to be a band that continued to regularly put out new music and collaborate on a regular basis beyond their "peak". Too much emotional baggage, bad memories of the extreme partying/substance abuse, and just "too much" of each other due to the demands of suddenly being the biggest band in the world. The trilogy of Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, and Tusk is an incredible feat within the rock world, as is the fact that five such strong, sophisticated, and gifted musicians came together at the right time to form the lineup. I think that everything since then has been, on some level, attempting to reclaim former glory without the drive and ambition that allowed for the band to have such a remarkable and era-defining five years. Think about it, if the creative and positive energy was enough to draw all members to return to the band time and again, I doubt Lindsey would have ever left in '87, or that Christine would have left after The Dance. It is human nature to return to what makes you feel good and energized (whether it is in fact productive or not) and it is also human nature to try to avoid what makes you feel disappointed and to run away from failure.

As much as anybody, I would love a new album from the group. My hope is that they will in fact come to the realization that as a five-piece they have had a remarkable creative output (that is when all involved have the energy and will to prove themselves). I give Lindsey/Christine/John/Mick credit for attempting to begin this process. However, I would not be surprised if a tour is all we get. These are five individuals who quite clearly have grown apart form each other and, despite a fantastically successful reunion tour, will most likely go out at as a band that was able to (admirably, I might add) maintain musical relevancy based on an outstanding run of albums and songs during those glorious five years.

That's my opinion, anyway.

I don't blame Christine for retiring, per se... But, she does have to take some blame for the lack of new music music. And put a damn solo album out already. Jeez.. quit waiting for everyone else.. pull up ur bloomers and get moving girl!

This is a very astute analysis .For that five years Fleetwood Mac was to me like what the Beatles must have been for people who came of age in the 1960s. Sadly now the only thing that seems to make Fleetwood Mac feel good and energized is making money ..lots of it.

Maybe she doesn't want to put out a solo album. Maybe she doesn't consider a solo career something to fall back on, but rather she's all in with Fleetwood Mac. I don't know that at all, but maybe.

Well, she has three solo albums. The latest from a desire to keep writing. It may not be ideal of her wants, but she's still an artist. And artists are better remembered when they produce.

Spot on. Very logical way to put it. More than likely the reason Stevie is reluctant to go back in to the studio with FM as well. Perhaps she feels the last batch of songs recorded on SYW didn't turn out quite like she envisioned them or she just doesn't have any creative energy working with Lindsey. If it were up to me I'd let Stevie nearly complete her songs outside the FM recording studio, bring them in at the last stages, and let FM add the finishing touches under the guidance of an outside producer.

I sense a tad bit of bias there. I don't blame her either, but you can't deny it pulled the rug out from what could have been some very creative output from the band. What would they have done after their surge in popularity from the enormous success of The Dance if Christine had stayed?!

Well, everyone knows that Christine is The Queen... but, that doesn't excuse her from my critique.

But she can negotiate on producers or production issues, rather than not participate at all. Lindsey has been talking about bringing an outside producer into the mix for ages, to show that his need to control the reins shouldn't be a barrier to new music any longer. He was even trying to do that with the EP.

Now that Christine is there and joyfully proffered her songs to him that gave him even more of an outlet as an producer and less of a reason to try to monopolize Stevie's songs. Stevie can set the terms for joining in on a new album, if there are any terms that existing in the world that could induce her. I don't think it's fear of the production results.

Moreover, the final output would be different with Christine there than it was with Stevie and Lindsey alone, so disappointment in SYW can hardly be the justification for her position now. The entity that is here now is a different creature than the quartet of 2003, musically and emotionally. Christine not only changes the sound of FM, but she changes (and often deflects) the tensions in the studio. Her presence gives rise to a different dynamic.

Michele

That being said, it makes you wonder why she isn't there. The only other plausible answers in my opinion would be that she needs a break, a break from FM, or she wants to put her creative efforts elsewhere. Whether it be on a solo project or working with the Sheryl Crows, Charles Kelleys, and Kid School of Rock Bands of the world.

I really think this is it. I think she wants some time out of the constant public eye where she can do her own thing, whatever that is-- family, friends, time in her little trailer house in Malibu, whatever..-- eat what she wants, not be always traveling. I remember that interview where she showed the reporter her fridge full of veggies and her nighttime treat was a thing of yogurt. She feels she has to maintain a certain image in public and keep the weight off, do a million interviews, fly from place to place...a lot of work. Your day is managed for you and you're told where to go and when. I think she just wants some personal time off and freedom to do whatever she wants on a given day. Christine had that for years, to the point where she finally got bored and wanted to get back to a busy work schedule. I think Stevie wants some down time and some time away from band politics and all the rest of it. As a fan it makes me nuts, but I get it.

Oh boohoo. Most of us get a few weeks holiday a year.
If she were younger I'd get it. But when you're in your later years there isn't the time available to waste. If she's going to retire, fair enough. Otherwise, 5 months maximum to recuperate/relax and then back to work.
Year and a half...my a**
