As funny as that is, there's so much truth to it. And I think that's what pisses Lindsey and Mick off.

I'm just curious do we have an actual source for this or is this Ledgies taking speculation at face value again. Do we *know for a fact* that Nicks' "will not take questions about a new FM album" or do we just think it's very likely this is the case?

This is all so absurd. News of a new FM album could actually HELP 24 Karat...it would generate a little more buzz. The whole "while we wait for that, we've got this other similar project you would enjoy." It could be a tasty appetizer.

Why Stevie is not speaking of participating and why the band are being so ominous in their suggestions of "hope" and "one way or another" is beyond me. Maybe something deeper is happening behind the scenes? Or is it simply that Stevie cannot stomach the idea of working with Lindsey in this way again? I'm thinking it's the latter. She worked hard for her artistic I freedom and won't take well to her traditionally-recessed role while the band makes its first effing record in close to 30 years. Good lord. Just give them three songs-- anything. She must have notebooks full of things they can work on.

Hello all---

I find it very interesting that Christine jumped back into the band and immediately handed over several piano and voice demos to Lindsey, with which he then took "massive liberties." They've both commented about how excited they are about writing, arranging, and recording those new songs.

On the other hand, we have Stevie, who has made it clear that she resents Lindsey changing her songs.

But I suspect this dramatic difference has more than a little to do with how Lindsey himself treats each of these ladies as collaborators. Clearly he views Christine as an equal. Does he view Stevie in the same light?

Similarly, they also view him differently. Christine seems to realize that he is able to bring something new and unique forth from her songs. Maybe Christine is simply more confident in herself and can handle Lindsey's suggestions without taking them to heart, but Stevie can't help feeling that Lindsey is trying to change her creations.

in the recent interview linked to in the other thread, he does say of Christine that "she is a working musician" and so that gives them a common basis to work from. It doesn't take much to infer that he doesn't see Stevie in the same way-- and she is not, in fact, a working musician in any way. So I think you're right he approaches each of them differently musically. And of course he has none of the baggage with Chris that he has with Stevie. 45 year baggage. You'd think that sh*t would get too heavy to carry after all these years (for both of them) and yet…..

Stevie has spoken about the new music, though only to say she hasn't heard it yet. Still, it makes me doubt there's some sort of gag order on asking her about it.

Given the fact that she has so many other things to talk about right now, and interviewers have so many things to ask her about, maybe whether or not she'll participate just simply hasn't come up. And, as I've said previously, perhaps she doesn't think she needs to say she'll be participating. In her mind, it could be a foregone conclusion now that Christine is back.

Again, it's really only Mick who has said that he "hopes" Stevie will join them in the studio. Lindsey and Christine have talked in far more certain terms. ("Stevie has assured us she'll be ready to record after the tour." "Stevie is planning on joining us in the studio after the tour." "Stevie will come in after the tour, and we'll finish what we've been working on.")

I know some fans would feel more reassured if Stevie herself would say it, but I'm satisfied with the comments from Chris & Lindsey -- and I neither believe that they are blowing smoke nor do I believe they're trying to convince/coerce Stevie via comments to the press.

Bingo! You win a prize. That's how I've read it since, World Turning.

But before he left the band, Stevie wanted Lindsey to change her creations and pouted when he didn't.

For instance in 1997 she said,

Quote:
"He could take my songs and do what I would do if I had musical talent. When he wasn't angry with me, that is. That's why there's seven or eight great songs, and there's 50 more where he wasn't happy with me and didn't help me."
He saw her the way she saw herself. I think at some point though, maybe around TISL, she began to see that with the right collaborator, she could shape and produce her music, even if she was not a musician. When she worked with Lindsey after that she wasn't as dependent on his vision any more and their creative dynamic fell apart.

I would have thought she realized that long before 97, especially after all the solo success. By 97 she'd had 5 solo albums without his help. maybe she just meant specifically her mac stuff… though they weren't recording together in 97. 98 if you count The Dance recording but that's not much new stuff for her (just one song). THeir next recording together was SYW and that was 2002 they were recording…. who the hell knows with them

Has Stevie ever explicitly said which FM songs she wasn't happy with? (Besides Say You Will) I'm very interested if anyone has more info on which of the songs she considers great and the other 50 she says he wasn't happy with her for. That's the thing, if you're a songwriter, why would you put something out if you're not absolutely happy with it?

Also, wouldn't Stevie have not been dependent on Lindsey from Bella Donna, with Edge of Seventeen and other songs?

well wasn't it around 98 or so that she wrote that Tom Petty knew her BETTER than she knew herself?

But then he said no, you write your songs yourself.

Also, regarding Stevie, I hope she's not the type that thinks her only great songs are the so-called hits. Sometimes people get like that....they think something's only good if it receives acclaim and success.

I don't think she felt independent with those solo albums though. I don't think she felt in charge with her early albums the way she began to with TISL.

You know that October 1997 Spin Magazine interview is the same one in which she says that she came upon Lindsey and Christine:

Quote:
I also remember getting very upset with Lindsey one night when I realized that he and Christine had written "World Turning." I had been with Lindsey all those years and we had never written a song together. Plus, I walked into the studio and they were singing it together."

Tom may be Stevie's best friend, but from a listener's perspective, he needs to try to give her advice that makes better lyrics.
