[Same announcement, I'm just putting it in for the line that Liz said she had no further information]
http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/20...reatment/?_r=0 October 28, 2013 New York Times Fleetwood Mac Cancels Tour as John McVie Undergoes Cancer Treatment By ALLAN KOZINN Fleetwood Mac announced on its Facebook page on Sunday that it was canceling a monthlong, 14-concert tour of New Zealand and Australia, set to start Nov. 10, because its bassist, John McVie, was scheduled to undergo cancer treatment during that period. The statement did not say what form of cancer the 67-year-old Mr. McVie had, and Liz Rosenberg, the group’s spokeswoman, said she had no further information. Mr. McVie — the Mac in the band’s name — was one of the group’s founders, joining forces in 1967 with two of his colleagues in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, the guitarist Peter Green (who left in 1970) and the drummer Mick Fleetwood, as well as a second guitarist, Jeremy Spencer. Mr. McVie’s ex-wife, Christine McVie, was the band’s keyboardist from 1969 to 1998 (they divorced in 1977), and has joined them intermittently since then, most recently at a concert at the 02 Arena in London in September. The band completed a European tour on Saturday, just before posting its announcement. The Facebook announcement includes a brief statement from the band, which includes Mr. Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, that reads: “We are sorry to not be able to play these Australian and New Zealand dates. We hope our Australian and New Zealand fans as well as Fleetwood Mac fans everywhere will join us in wishing John and his family all the best.” The statement did not say whether a planned show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Dec. 30 would go on as scheduled, but tickets appeared to be available through a link on the band’s web page. |

I definitely wish John the best, and was saddened when I first saw the news. I'm sure he'll fight through it, without a doubt.

If Stevie announces she has a terminal illness, I shouldn't feel entitled to know what the disease is. That goes for anyone, whether they are famous or not.I'm not saying John's personal life shouldn't ever be discussed - he is a celebrity to some extent, and he is somewhat in the public eye so it's unavoidable that people are curious. But discussing "are they or aren't they sleeping together" or "who was that song really about?" or "how much blow went up all their noses?" is one thing - health/illness is quite another (patient confidentiality ring a bell?) Same for those wondering why we don't have more details. Why? Because it's none of our business. |

I don't realistically see the band lasting any longer if either namesake member were to pop it. In the worst case scenario being discussed here Mick wouldn't want to do it, he's done projects in his own name without John before, and a certain former couple would probably breathe a sigh of relief at not having to work together anymore, though I'm sure they'd wish each other well. I remember one of the band (not sure which) saying in a late 80s British documentary that as far as they were concerned there was no reason why there shouldn't be a Fleetwood Mac while both Mick and John were alive. I'm sure the namesakes have a gentleman's agreement to retire the name should one of them pass away.
And note I'm not dissing anyone in the band here. |
