Even though she stayed, I think when Lindsey left she technically felt it was over anyway.

I think the fight was so intense not because they were a sexual couple at that time, but because they loved each other and would miss each other (Mick says Stevie told Lindsey he was breaking her _____ heart) and couldn't believe that everything was coming to an end after all the years they'd been together. Stevie was mad that Lindsey could leave, because she'd never done that, no matter how bad things had gotten. And Lindsey was hurt and didn't want to leave either, though feeling he had no choice. Mick said Lindsey sat in his car outside for awhile, like he wanted someone to come outside to him, perhaps bring him back. No one did.

Michele
I totally think her guilt was not leaving FM and going back to BN as had been the plan.

I don't necessarily think they were involved sexually then -- but whatever their relationship was by that point was definitely not as clear cut as John and Christine's. You didn't see those two going at it 10 years after their split...

well, Stevie says everything breaks her heart. In fact it makes an interesting drinking game, to listen to IYD and take a shot every time she says the phrase "break my heart"... ; )

I don't doubt that the *essence* of what she says about LB and his concern for her is true..... but it does seem rather .... awkward at best... to say this, especially the *way* she said it, right in front of him. Strange...... yet being Stevie, not really so strange.

Thank goodness! I'm currently searching for whatever video or interview it was (I think it was a video, maybe.. maybe not) where she said it. I remember it being kind of ambiguous and she didn't really go into detail about it [obviously] but she definitely mentioned it.

I would have loved to have seen his reaction, tbh. And hear her inflection as she said it

No, Christine didn't have that attachment any longer. But I think John might have been "going at it". He says he still cried every time he heard Songbird, knowing that it is about him and it's being sung by a person that you loved and still love.

I am sure she did not strangle him and he did not throw Christine over the bonnet of a car when she decided to leave the band in 1998, but he seemed pretty moody about it. When she said (for IMT promotion) that she occasionally talked to Stevie and Mick, but indicated that some of them were still miffed about her leaving, I think John was one of the ones miffed and he was hurt that she was so unhappy during The Dance. When they reconvened for The Dance Stevie said that John was still drinking and Lindsey later said that John was still uptight being around Christine (which is one reason he declared that everyone was freed by her absence somehow).

So, I don't think Lindsey and Stevie were the only ones with emotional bonds that were hard to break.

Of course, I am sure that the 1987 parting hurt as much as a divorce for both Lindsey and Stevie. That's why she said they screamed things at each other, things that they'd held back for 10 years, just in case they might still get back together. Things that they finally let go in rage and pain. I think it was hard.

But I also think it would be pretty hard for John to keep going if Mick up and left the band too. So . . .

Michele

I never heard him talk about this. Can you enlighten me? Was this in the press?

No. In the press Lindsey said that Stevie told him that the stuff in Mick's book wasn't true. He didn't say he was worried about her.

Or I could have imagined that whole scenario. I can't remember where I've heard most of the things I have stored in my memory lol.

Could this be what you're both remembering? This is from a 1987 article in Creem magazine, though, while they were promoting 'Tango.' Not after Lindsey's departure. (The full article can be found in the Blue Letter Archives.)

Lindsey says he’d also like to work with Laurie Anderson, and mentions that Stevie was recently asking him on the phone if he’d like to do another Buckingham/Nicks album.

His voice becomes more pensive than usual, which is getting pretty pensive. "You just don’t usually have to do that sort of thing-to break up with someone and then see them for the next 12 years. That’s just not normal…it’s not even very well. It’s sort of an ill thing to have to do, but what the hell."

That seems to be the same incident, but I actually don't think I've ever read that article before. I specifically remember Stevie talking about it and saying that she knew Lindsey wasn't happy, called him up, asked if he wanted her to leave the band and they could be Buckingham Nicks again, etc.

I've been trying to find where I read it/saw it but I just can't seem to find it... I believe it was a video.

But at least this somewhat proves that I didn't entirely make it up haha. I just wish I knew where/when it was that Stevie also mentioned it.

Stevie Nicks Recalls "Rumours" Sessions as 35th Anniversary Reissue Hits Stores

The 35th anniversary reissues of Fleetwood Mac‘s Rumours hit stores today. The band’s historic 1977 album is available as a six-disc Deluxe Edition and a three-CD Expanded Edition. The deluxe package offers a remastered version of the original record plus the B-side “Silver Springs,” along with a variety of demos and outtakes, a CD of a ’77 concert performances, a DVD boasting a making-of documentary and a high-quality vinyl LP.

As fans familiar with the history of Fleetwood Mac know, at the time Rumours was being recorded, all five members of the band were going through major personal turmoil. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, who were a couple when they joined the group in 1975, were in the process of breaking up. In addition, John McVie and Christine McVie had just divorced, while Mick Fleetwood‘s own marriage was on the rocks. This upheaval was reflected in, and inspired, many of the tunes that wound up on the album, including such hits as “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way” and “Don’t Stop.”

Speaking with ABC News Radio about the Rumours sessions, Nicks admitted that as hard as that time may have been emotionally for the band members, it also was a very positive period for the group, in part because of the quality of the music being made.

“We were all writing little movies around what was really happening and we were digging it,” she explained. “We were having a lot of fun recording those songs, even though we were falling apart…If anything was keeping us from falling apart it was going into the studio every day. And we were totally having a great time.”

The singer also maintains that although she and her band mates may have been experiencing a lot of hurt with regard to the state of their relationships, on the whole, they had little to complain about.

“We were rich. We were young,” said Nicks. “We were falling out of love with each other but, hey, there was a lot of other…men and women in the world. [And] we were all movin’ on and we had these great jobs. So, as bad as it was, it was still great.”

Following its release in February 1977, Rumours went on to top the Billboard 200 chart en route to winning the Grammy for Album of the Year. It has sold more than 19 million copies in the U.S. alone, making it the ninth-best-selling album ever released in the States. Fleetwood Mac fans can expect to hear plenty of tunes from the record if they check out a show on the band’s upcoming North American tour, which kicks off April 4 in Columbus, Ohio.

[The Gothamist posted excerpts from Rolling Stone's old FM interview]
April 8, 2013
http://gothamist.com/2013/04/08/flee...onight_rev.php

Tonight Fleetwood Mac returns to New York City with a show at Madison Square Garden, so what better time to revisit this 1977 Rolling Stone cover story on the band, penned by a young Cameron Crowe and titled "The True Life Confessions of Fleetwood Mac." The band, which includes some of the world's original oversharers, talk a lot about love, and love lost. Below, some dating advice from Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks, and Lindsey Buckingham...

Advice On Being Single... From Fleetwood Mac, Circa 1977

■STEVIE NICKS: "It's strange for me. I've never been a dater. I don't really like parties. I'm very alone now. I'm not one of those women who are just willing to go out and sit at the Rainbow. In my position I could meet a lot of people just because of the band I'm in. Well, I don't want to meet anybody because of the band I'm in. I thought, 'Here I am, we just won these fantastic awards, we've just been on TV, everybody is singing our praises and here I am driving home in my black limousine.' Terribly alone. Sort of knowing how it would feel to be Marilyn Monroe or something. It was a very strange feeling and I didn't like it at all."

■LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM: "It was a little lonely there for a while. The thought of being on my own really terrified me. But then I realized being alone is really a cleansing thing... as I began to feel myself becoming more myself again. I'm surprised we lasted as long as we did. Being in this band really ****s up relationships with chicks. Since Stevie, I have found that to be true. I could meet someone that I really like, have maybe a few days to get it together and that's about it. The rest of the time I'm too into Fleetwood Mac."

■CHRISTINE MCVIE: "There's no doubt about the fact that he [John McVie] hasn't really been a very happy man since I left him. I know that. Sure, I could make him happy tomorrow and say, 'Yeah, John, I'll come back to you.' Then I would be miserable. I'm not that unselfish. But if I was the kind of girl who wandered in with a new boyfriend every week, enjoying my newfound freedom, I don't know how he could handle that. I'd love to have a load of dates. I haven't done that since I was at college. But it's really out of the question. I mean I hardly meet anybody. I'm so involved in the band. Seven more years until I'm 40. Then I'll start all over again..."

I feel like this is why she ended up with all those one-night-stands and taudry affairs and whatnot. Somebody has some issues with loneliness.

Didn't she say that in the Oprah masterclass thing? Or maybe I'm getting confused. But she said something like, "I wasn't looking to stray, but I would get really lonely." Maybe I'm misremembering.

But yeah she always seemed very lonely to me, which is funny as she seems to have come from a loving family. But maybe that's the thing, once she left her parents she couldn't really get used to not having their support. Sometimes I think she fills her life up with things to distract her from her loneliness.

But this is total armchair psychology and speculation-next-to-gossip.

No, I kinda get you here. She doesn't seem to be good at being single or alone. You ever notice that for the most part of her younger years, she would go straight from man to man and avoided periods of time being single? Like she left the first Dave to be with Lindsey, no time single in between them. Then only a month or two after Linds, she was with Don. Then Paul, then was with Mick at the same time as Paul. And the list goes on and on. Someone needs some therapy
(*kidding*)

She was like, "And when our relationship started to go bad, I looked elsewhere," or something similar.

I don't recall her mentioning that she was lonely (although she very well might have been), just that she was so terribly unhappy.

I found that quote interesting since she has so adamantly denied ever cheating on Linds in the past. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me either way. She constantly contradicts herself.
