Default Stevie And Sheryl Crow Question...

I was listening to the Buckingham Nicks Version of Sorceror then Sheryl's production of it.

I have to be honest... I prefer Sheryl's production of it. I loved all the tracks she produced for Stevie. Their harmonies are amazing. They hold up so well live.

I feel Sheryl has a great ear for Stevie's music right next to Lindsey. While I do like In Your Dreams, I always go back to the songs Sheryl produced for Practical Magic soundtrack and parts of Trouble In Shangri-La.

Does anybody else like the productions Sheryl did for Stevie? Do you think Stevie for the next solo album should wait till Sheryl isn't touring so she can produce a whole album for Stevie? That is why she was not able to produce all of Trouble In Shangri-La. And you can tell that the tracks Sheryl isnt involved in are the weaker ones.

Just curious what everyone's opinion here is all..

There are or were alot of people on this board who dislike Sheryl and her work with Stevie.I wouldn't rank her with Lindsey as her best producer. That would have to be Jimmy Iovine IMHO.I do like her work with Stevie in particular the Practical Magic songs.I do however think that the John Shanks songs on TISL were overall more well produced than Sheryl's were.I would have to also rate Dave Stewart over Sheryl for Moonlight and Annabel Lee alone.I don't see Sheryl and Stevie working together on an entire album though.it also seems that the Sherly with Fleetwood Mac debacle has kind of cooled things off a bit although she did appear with Stevie on Oprah last year,

I find Sheryl's production too stripped down and hit-or-miss. Stevie sounds like she is bawling into an empty rain barrel with a couple of high school guitar students jamming behind her.

This is the problem I have with the comparisons - there is 30 years between them and comparing a demo/live track with a studio version is apples and oranges. Same thing with the Smile At You demo vs. SYW Smile At You that everyone complains about. The way people (and technology) interpret things change with 30 years perspective.

Anyway, I like both versions of Sorcerer, but prefer the BN versions (surprise! ). I like the banjo and Stevie's tambourine on the BN demo and I like the way Lindsey mocked that sound on the electric guitar, the rocking-edgy sound they had and the Django lead in and their ending trading off on "who found/won't you tell me lady from the mountain". I especially like the end of it in one live show where they harmonize the screaming of "Moun-tai - ain!"

But, I do think Sheryl did a great job with it and I like her harmonies fine.

Actually productionwise my favorite version of Sorcerer is on the Streets of Fire soundtrack .This one was produced by Jimmy Iovine.

I am with you: Sheryl is great. I'm probably in the minority here, but other than a few great tracks (Moonlight, FWIW, Italian Summer, Secret Love), I'm not even that crazy about "In Your Dreams," whereas "Trouble In Shangri-La" is great from start to finish.

I don't know what weirdness happened with Sheryl/Fleetwood Mac (other than her out-of-place announcement and the Mac's rebuff) and probably none of us really know. But she is busy with her own career and two kids...I think she and Stevie will never align like they did ten years ago, though one-off collaborations here and there can be expected.

I *REALLY* loved the tracks Sheryl produced for Stevie on the Practical Magic soundtrack, I thought they were gorgeously done. However, I wasn't nuts about her work on Trouble In Shangri La... I vastly prefer the John Shanks tracks. Like Mitzo pointed out, Sheryl's TISL tracks are seriously lacking in depth & ambiance. I think Sheryl prefers to work very quickly & prefers some jagged edges left for sharpness. Because of her mystical style, Stevie's songs really benefits from layering & softening of all instruments & vocals. Sheryl's TISL tracks seemed very rushed & sloppy to my ears... you can just tell her heart wasn't in it, she felt like she had better places to be.

I love Sheryl's work on Stevie's songs, especially the TISL tracks. I prefer guitars up front and center in the mix with the vocals, so Sheryl's recording technique is ace as far as I'm concerned. She gives Stevie's songs a great rocking edge that I really like.

I also really love their vocal blend and Sheryl, like Stevie, can wrap her voice around anyone's. They make beautiful harmonies together.

I love Sheryl Crow and her musical sensibilities. She did some great work with Stevie, but as far as being the main producer of a solo album -- I don't think she'd make the kind of progressive impact someone like Dave Stewart or Lindsey has achieved...someone who will challenge Stevie and push her artistically into areas she otherwise would not go to. I would love to see her work with T Bone Burnett. He could create a masterpiece of an album for Stevie. His production style is very earthy/country, classic and warm.

To be fair, the Practical Magic arrangements were basically clones of the original Fleetwood Mac arrangements and Lind's (and other producers') sensibilities at that time.

The Songs from TISL that were from old demos were also very similar to the originals. She did not bring anything new to the table did she?

I think TISL would have been a stronger album though had the two Practical Magic songs gone on TISL. That album was all over the place.

I disagree with you here beause Sheryl has told anyone who would listen what a huge fan she is of Stevie Nicks, so I think her heart was definately in it. But like you I'm not fond of any of the songs she produced or Stevie's vocals on them either. The John Shanks produced tracks were and are and will probably always be, my favorite songs on TISL.

Yes, that is rousing. Makes me sing along. I like both versions, but I think Sheryl's being less raw kind of fits with the strange atmosphere of the song more -- which is not to say Lindsey can't do strange atmosphere, but he didn't as much as Sheryl did on this song.

I also like the video with Sheryl.
