Has anyone checked this out? I guess there is a Stevie interview....
http://www.amazon.com/Want-My-MTV-Un...0354313&sr=1-1 Fleetwood Mac, “Hold Me” (1982)" Making a video in the desert is sweaty and difficult, especially with a band that can’t stand one another: “It was so hot, and we weren’t getting along,” Stevie Nicks recalls. “Hold Me” is like a sun-baked hallucination, with sand dunes, guitars, Magritte paintings, Nicks in five-inch platform heels, and an obligatory, early-1980s slow-motion shot of breaking glass. Director Steve Barron: “That wasn’t a good video.” Producer Simon Fields: “John McVie was drunk and tried to punch me. It was a [expletive] nightmare, a horrendous day in the desert.” While researching the book, the author said he was suprised at how much drugs were being done by the MTv staff, he mentioned he expected that from Stevie Nicks, but not the VJ's lol |

That's a pretty interesting insight, although, I'd disagree with him calling Hold Me a bad video, I think it's great. If only for the fabulous red dress Stevie has on

I remember when this used to run in the 80's. I loved it. I thought it was so surreal. I think when you're young you sort of associate videos with the artists and between that and Gypsy I just the Mac was so artistic and creative.

I flipped thru the book today at the store. It's basically a ton of comments from a ton of people about the videos and the scene at the time. Stevie talks about the "Hold Me" video being a pain because it was so hot and she had to keep walking in the boots thru the sand. They kept trying to get the look right of her in the lounge and no one was speaking to each other at the time.
For "Gypsy" she says that she was trying to quit coke at that time, but the stress of the video (again no one was speaking) was too much. So she had a little stash in a bottle on the set, she had it hidden so when she needed it she'd be all set. Over night someone cleaned the set and threw the bottle out. She was pissed because she wanted it and it was gone. She also says that the director just paired everyone up for the dance scene. He didn't realize that he was pairing ex-couples, he thought they just looked good together. Stevie says Lindsey was pissed at her for whatever reason and didn't want to dance with her (which she says you can tell), she also says she wasn't happy and didn't want to dance with him either, besides he can't dance! She says it's too bad the drugs and egos got in the way because they could have done a lot of other great videos like "Gypsy". She tells of "Stand Back" and how the whole thing was a disaster and she hated the Civil War concept, when she decided to scrap the video her manager told her she was an idiot. She didn't care and spent another $1million to make the second version. Of "I Can't Wait" she says she can't believe she did so much coke before the shoot. she says she can't stand to watch the video because her eyes are swimming. She says she could "stab herself" for making her self look so bad. When asked which videos did she do coke before shooting, she says "All of them". Finally the director for "As Long As You Follow" says that he was panning around the set and filming Christine who sang lead on the on song, then panned over to Stevie who was supposed to be sitting on the couch, but she wasn't there because she'd fallen to the floor! Looks like a cool book for those who remember when MTV mattered!!! |

One of many reasons why the Tusk dance was hard to watch through the SYW tour.

this is the funniest thing that I have heard all week ..trying on her own to quit coke at the very height of her career.

I just finished this book, and it's written as an oral history with so many cool people offering personal stories. The bit about Stevie falling off the sofa during the "As Long As You Follow" shoot seems a bit exaggerated, but it still make me laugh. Her haughty summation of the "Hold Me" video, also, had me cracking up.
There's also some really frank comments from Ann and Nancy Wilson about their 80s videos that I've not read before; really telling of the period. If you loved MTV in the 80s and early 90s, this is for you, especially. |

Years and years ago I had a book called The Rolling Stone Book of Music Videos or something like that and I remember an entire section (it may have even been a whole chapter) devoted to the making of the Civil War Stand Back video. And I remember as a teen thinking I'd never get to see it, and ten years later in the 90's I'd gotten a really washed out copy on a VHS bootleg and was thrilled to death. And of course whenever Crystal Dreams came out with the commentary I was in heaven. But I remember reading all about it back then and just being enthralled with this video that was never going to be seen. I wonder if there are copies of that book floating around. I got rid of mine in the late 90's. I kind of wish I'd saved it now. |

I totally agree! I will never forget the first time I saw the Gypsy video as a kid. Those images burned in my mind and I forever associated FM with that song and video. I thought they were magical!

Omg I thought she was a mess in the ICW video. They show her singing when she's not supposed to, they cut away to her starting to sing then suddenly stopping because she wasn't supposed to, they show her close up when she's not singing then cut away when she's supposed to be. And while she's staring at the camera during some of those close-ups and not singing all I can see is her flared nostrils and dilated eyes and I thought wow...But I always thought the editor was more coke up than she was lol

The I Can't Wait video is kind of goofy, but in my opinion, Stevie looks unbelievably gorgeous.
