Which is puzzling as Idol is known to be a marketing/promotion tool. I can't even recall an episode where the Celebrity performer didn't have an album or something to promote.

I don't buy that. I mean yes, I believe Ellen wanted her to sing that song, but no way do I think Stevie freakin' Nicks would have been turned away had she insited on performing something else.

She may not have been turned away, per se, but fulfilling Ellen's request was probably a goodwill gesture that helped insure that she'd be booked again just three months later when the album was released.

People need to be reminded that Stevie Nicks is a solo artist as well as a member of Fleetwood Mac. When she appeared on Oprah and sang Landslide instead of Secret Love, that was a missed opportunity for millions of people to hear the debut single from her new album. Once again, her solo career was compromised for Fleetwood Mac.

Why wouldn't she be allowed to sing Secret Love?

However, the debut single needed to be promoted before the album's release.

Stevie is one of the most well-respected artists in the industry, but producers are king and they have the final say in what an artist is able to perform on a given show. They care about ratings and interest in their own show, not about the artist selling X amount of copies of their album. Landslide will garner countless more viewers than Secret Love every day of the week, and Stevie knows this too.

Stevie is also pretty humble, and usually, when someone asks her to do something, she does it.

Sorry, I thought that was clear. The show only wanted her if she was going to perform a classic hit. She wanted to sing her new single, and they refused.

Oprah required the same thing--the episode featured artists singing their classics only. Not Stevie's choice. She only accepted for the honor of being on Oprah, I assume.

Oprah, perhaps the moment Stevie became a sellout.
No need for anyone to argue about publicity here. She just
deserved better than that. The other artists on that show
except possibly Pat Benatar, didn't deserve to be on there
with her. Stevie made her choice.

I disagree, actually. Pat Benatar and Joan Jett certainly qualify as rock godesses, and Stevie was given special honor--she was the only one to get a sit-down, and shot "Secret Love" for the web. And from the excitement we saw on Oprah Behind the Scenes and her declaration, "I've been waiting x years to sing this to you, Oprah," it meant a lot to her.
Yeah, she sang "Landslide," but I don't see that appearance as Stevie selling out. Mileage may vary.

That's funny.

I'm a big Pat Benatar fan, and I like some of
Jett's material. But watching that show made
me cringe for Stevie. If the show would have
been Oprah interviewing Pat the first half hour
and Stevie the second half, then I think it wouldn't
have been so bad.

I don't for one minute consider Stevie a sellout for appearing on Oprah. I saw it as a special honor having her on after all those YEARS and her finally making it on right before the show went off the air forever. We have always wanted so many things from her but sometimes the people in her camp aren't on board to make it happen or her management seeing it through from fans, so it's not always Stevie's fault.

I do (for more than a minute) think it was a sellout in this sense,
she sold herself short. She deserved more than what she
got. Imagine how much better it could have been with Stevie
getting the second half hour of the show. If Oprah or her people
wouldn't offer such, she or her handlers should have respectfully
turned it down.

She's near the end of her career and she needs to protect her legacy.
Being part of an Eighties has been show didn't do her any favors.

I think it was more a big deal for Stevie herself to have been on Oprah (finally) than Oprah having all of those women on herself. I got the feeling Oprah downplayed some people in favor of her personal diva favorites like Tina Turner and other gf's...

I think anyone who goes on Oprah is selling out something or other. That show has always been a superficial gab-hour for housewives & second-tier paparazzi. It's Entertainment Weekly for TV -- it's a supermarket checkout rag with the gloss of do-goodism. "We can change the world!" Yeah, right.

Look at Stevie Nicks in my signature photos. That person does NOT belong on daytime TV, playing to the housewives who, long ago, switched from watching Richard Simmons to watching Oprah.

I think it's just an honor to be asked to be on Oprah, because she IS such an influential person in the industry. You can't deny that, regardless of how much you value her show/opinion or whatever.
