Watching Doing The Best That I Can for the first time on You tube.

Reason being, 2008 I was new to the Internet & You Tube, & the first thing i did was type in Stevie's name. To this day i'm not sure why it was her that came to mind first off cause i totally lost interest in her a long time ago, which i really regret now. anyway the first song i wanted to watch on You Tube was GDW, immediately i became addicted & would stay up till 3 in the morning every night, watching every single fascinating interview, live concert performance's, demo recordings etc, i have been in Stevie heaven ever since!!
Not long after i discovered Doing The Best That I Can piano version, & that song just broke my heart, i bawled my eyes out. I guess at that time when this song was recorded i thought Stevie had dropped off the face of the planet, when in fact she was going through the most torturous, painful time of her life.. very sad indeed..
Anyway thank the Stevie angels she got through it, and now she's finally at peace & happy with her life

Garbo. Prior to the release of the Enchanted boxed set I have never heard Garbo before. Stevie mentioned Garbo a time or two in interviews. People on the Ledge said it was a favorite. I also learned it was a B side of Stand Back. What was this Garbo? One the first songs I played off of Enchanted was Garbo out of curiosity. I really liked Garbo, a kind of waltzy , romantic song. The third time I played it I just bawled. It was a missing link that tied together many her songs. If Garbo comes on in an ipod shuffle I have to have my guard up or the tears will flow again.

Beautiful Child- 'Your hands held mine, so few hour'
You could allow yourself to relate this song to so many different circumstances. I relate it to my Aunt Angel. When she passed away a few years ago after a long batter with cancer, I was at peace, knowing I did everything I could to provide comfort to her and my cousins during that difficult time. But still I was left feeling that ........'my hands had held hers so few hours'

Well really any Stevie song can make me tear up at any given moment...I always have to be on guard somewhat when listening to her music in public. But the ones that I know I will cry on are:

Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You ( I think there's a case to be made that this might be one of the best rock n' roll ballads ever written. My eyes are getting watery just thinking about the song)
Gypsy (Mirage tour...so emotional)
Italian Summer ( I actually went to Italy this summer so technically it really was my Italian Summer....and it ended in a hurricane so wonderful:roll eyes:...Stevie predicted my life lol)
Nightbird (Not all the time...just during some performances...particularly at the end)

Soldier's Angel (Especially the live version)

I cry over stories, not songs -- unless the song tells a story. Country songs with a full blown narrative like Honey or Don't Take the Girl make me sob every time I hear them. But less plotted songs, don't get the same reaction from me.

On the other hand, I do cry when I hear Stevie tell the HAEWAFY story and fountain, even if the song itself doesn't do it for me.

#3 Songs that make me cry.....

Sara
Any version. This is my touchstone Stevie song. It's so multi-faceted that it can reach me in any mood. If I'm happy, it can make me joyous. If I'm sad, it can release what needs to be let go. As Stevie said, 'Sara' is a song that's easy to fall in love with, because she did too. I also love when she said that her mum told her that her dad talked about it like it was 'America the Beautiful' (I think), and would sit her down and point out to her all the great things that she'd done on it. So sweet.

Gypsy
Any version. For similar reasons to 'Sara'. For its mingling of strength and sorrow. As someone else said, 'She is dancing away from you now...' gets me every time. And 'I still see your bright eyes... I can't find you...' This reminds me of when I lost my dad. I'd lived far away from him for many years before he died, and it took a long time to realise that there was no distance I could travel that would mean I could get to him ever again, that I'd never find him no matter how hard I tried.

Blue Water
Don't know why, because it's quite repetitive and the piano isn't anything - except that (like Stevie) I love the water. And maybe it's slightly tied to 'Gypsy' too, with all that 'waiting for the sound of my gypsy'.

For What It's Worth
Predictably, it's the catch in her voice. And probably the fact that she mentions crying. Ugh, every time.
