On edit (not all the post appeared) -- I guess when there is no other gender parent, the remaining or only parent has to improvise. Doesn't the Big Brother and Big Sister type thing address this issue?

Just a thought

Sara had a male teacher last year who she loved to death. He was a wonderful teacher, and he still takes time out to go and talk to Sara and asks her to lunch every so often. It was his first year teaching, adn I think he found his calling in life. He is such a gentle and soft spoken man. I have a lot of respect for him.
I found out that he was a gay man when I ran into him and his partner at TGIFridays last winter, and he looked rather worried as his partner quickly walked away. That made me sad, because he was obviously worried that I would figure out his orientation and tell, but I didn't breathe a word.
