View Full Version : Rumours of Lindsey leaving the band?

Just like with the Time band I will not be paying to see this botched version of a once great band.I think I'd prefer to see a concert by the Bremen town musicians.

As another post said, screw it! Why don't we just go ahead and add Sheryl Crow and Vanessa Carlton to the lineup? We can sit in the audience and wonder why the hell we came. For that matter, let's call Billy Burnett while we're at it. Since we've paving the road to d-list hell, why not go for the full effect!
I almost posted the same thing you did :D Oh what a mess this has turned out to be, worse than my worst nightmare about this band. Even breaking up now would have been a more acceptable outcome.

So many assumptions thrown around in here...WOW!
Sincerely, I don’t think the decision to FIRE Lindsey would have boiled down to an ultimatum from anyone, including Stevie, probably especially Stevie. Their dynamic has never been great and unless he did something unforgivable - I cannot imagine the other three just easily going along with it - money or no money. This band has been through Hell and back and I think a lot of these assumptions and misguided low blows to Stevie & Mick are unjustifiable as we have no idea as fans what had went down behind the scenes. As it stands, they are less likely to pull in the crazy money with one of the main three songwriters missing.

Casual fans should probably hold off on buying tickets long after this tour is announced. There is alot of backlash all over social media and most if not all in support of Lindsey. I wouldn't even be surprised if this thing ends up getting canceled. If it moves forward, even after the public and die-hard fans not warming to the new members and the firing of Lindsey I'd expect they will follow the 87-90 route and add an opening act and reduce ticket prices significantly if they seriously plan to sell out arenas without all 5 of the Rumours era band.
I think most of us are still in a state of shock, but this band was never short on drama. Will be interesting how this all plays out this year. For now I am just disgusted and not thinking to clearly. Hope I wake up tomorrow and this was all a nightmare.
Its actually really heart-warming to see just how many people out there are expressing their negative opinion. I can't see it changing anything but its restored my faith in common sense and human decency. Mick and Stevie you stupid sh!ts, you messed up!

I am primarily a Stevie fan and I am absolutely not excited. In fact, I am outraged and disgusted. The magic of Fleetwood Mac is GONE without all 5 members of the Rumours lineup present. I waited years for Christine to return, and now this. I'm sorry to say, but the remaining 4 have made a HUGE mistake by agreeing to tour WITHOUT Buckingham! Do they need to be reminded of the blandness and mediocrity of Burnett/Vito/Bramlett/Mason? That's exactly what this will be. No one can effectively replace Buckingham in this band.
I co-sign this.

I don't solely blame Mick, Stevie, OR any of the remaining 4. This street runs multiple ways. I'm quite sure that Lindsey was holding out on them, much in the same way that Stevie did for the last 2 years. Lindsey thought he would teach her a lesson. Then they turned around and replaced him for the tour. The remaining 4 could have waited for him to complete a solo record or postponed the tour just as easily, but they chose to continue on without him. ALL ARE TO BLAME. They are pampered, indulgent, spoiled rock stars. The only foolish one is me for expecting anything else.

It is actually immaterial what went on behind the scenes, curious as I am about what transpired. What they are doing in public by firing Lindsey is disgraceful and an insult to the fans who have longed for a final Rumours 5 lineup farewell tour. Since Mick fired Lindsey then it is his responsibility, pure and simple. They didn't even give Lindsey the courtesy of making it appear as if it was his decision to resign from the band--he was fired, ostensibly for wanting to do a solo record! Did they threaten to fire Stevie for recording IYD, 24KG, TISL, etc.?

The thing is, they don't need to worry about us questioning this. A few thousand true Fleetwood Mac fans is nothing compared to the many, many thousands of fans that will no doubt be largely oblivious at the forthcoming shows. They couldn't give a sh!t about fans.
Sadly, I think this is true. Seems like there are some FM fans out there who think this is "just another personnel change". Except it's not, and here's why: every other time this band has changed personnel, it was to record new music and do new things. This time, it's to play the golden oldies. And if they do record new music, and Stevie is part of it, then the woman I have been a fan of for decades and whose music I have listened to every day of my life since the 70s will have shown her true, ugly colors. To fellow Stevie fans who think the Stevie/Lindsey sh&t show only went in one direction, you are so sadly mistaken. She took such great pleasure in toying with him and ultimately effing him over. NOT a pretty picture, sister.
Sadly, yes. I see it with the faux Eagles currently touring - casual fans still pay top dollar for tickets, not caring that Glenn Frey isn't there anymore and perfectly happy with Vince Gill (!) singing his parts. The same will happen here, I'm afraid.
i would like to think not, but again, kinda gotta agree with this.
And if Christine and John have freely gone along with this without standing up for Lindsey then I'm damn pissed off with them too.
Ditto. Especially Chris. Wow.
HA and to think we thought they might not carry on if something happened to John. Puuuuhlease. Mick probably had a bassist waiting in the wings in case something happened.
Yep. Just........yep.
Bingo! Fleetwood Mac has devolved to nothing more than Mick on the M$. Moneybag$ gravy train. Musical creativity has been given nothing but lip-service. I'll be really disappointed if Christine somehow doesn't bow out of this whole mess. Sorry Mick, no more $$$ from me. I don't have to dream - it's over.:distress:
Another yep from me.
I am against a Stevie controlled Mac tour with bringing her solo favorites. Stevie refuses to record with Fleetwood mac but she does not get fired. The double standard is pretty obscene.
And a third yep.
Not to mention the opportunity she now has to talk for half an hour to sing a three minute song and do a costume change every five minutes without anyone to challenge her.
And #4 for the win!! :distress:
I just can't believe all this! This sounds more like a tribute band than the real thing! Won't be spending any of my money on this line up regardless of whether Stevie is there Or not!
I sure as sh$t won't be there.

GLASS HALF FULL: At least we'll get to hear Neil Finn singing "Go Your Own Way", "Oh Well", and "Black Magic Woman" in concert. We also get to hear Neil duet with Christine on "Don't Stop" and "World Turning". Stevie can add "Stand Back" and "Has Anyone Ever Written" into the set list. We can also pull out "Hold Me" and "Brown Eyes". Sound familiar? Longtime fans: We've been down this road before and it was like having dinner at a cheap Sizzler steak house with stale wine. God, help us!

I know some people like those 87-90 shows but I just cringe when I watch or listen to them. "Are we havin' fun yet!?" No, Billy, we're not.
At least then they were a semi functioning band of 40 year olds. Now they're septuagenarians who've got half of the voice and stamina that they had 30 years ago.

Fleetwood Mac may be heading into their final year. According to the band’s guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, the group will cease to operate in 2015 or soon afterwards. He told the American TV channel PBS that the forthcoming Fleetwood Mac album and tour would be their “last act”.
2014 was a big year for Fleetwood Mac: the original keyboardist and songwriter Christine McVie rejoined after quitting the band in 1998. They played a series of acclaimed gigs, and next year bring their On With the Show tour to the UK – including a headline slot at the Isle of Wight festival. There is also the promise of the band’s first album since 2003, which will feature a number of new songs that McVie and Buckingham have worked on together.
“She gave me a bunch of stuff to take home,” said Buckingham. “I worked on it, came back, and she loved it. We went into the studio and came out with the best songs we’ve co-written in years.” He added: “Christine really fills the gap of the polarity that might exist otherwise, and helps things breathe.”
However, Buckingham did admit to being sceptical when he first heard that McVie wanted to return. He said: “My initial reaction was, ‘OK – we have to take this with baby steps.’ The want to return doesn’t mean you can repeat history; it doesn’t mean all the tools, all the reference points are still there for it all to work.”
The current Fleetwood Mac lineup is the same one that oversaw the band’s most successful period, including the trio of classic 1970s albums Fleetwood Mac, Rumours and Tusk, as well as the poppy 1980s hit Tango in the Night.
Buckingham concluded: “We’re going to continue working on the new album, and the solo stuff will take a back seat for a year or two. A beautiful way to wrap up this last act.”

Well, from what I have read - it sounds like Lindsey is just flat out not participating in the tour. I am sure he has his reasons. Perhaps he didn't want to tour without a new album to support it.
I don't find it necessarily flattering that some on this forum are slamming other members of the band for who is at fault.
The truth is, we are not in their inner circle so we do not really know what happened, and we are reacting based out of stipulation and assumptions from (the most part) gossip tabs.
There was no statement made that said Lindsey is out of the band forever or that he was fired.
Think we all need to take it down a few notches.
Lindsey has a solid solo career and he can take this opportunity to bring forth some new music with a tour of his own.

“Two weeks ago I received a wonderful invitation to be a part of a truly great band. A few days later I was standing in a room playing music with Fleetwood Mac. It felt fresh and exciting, so many great songs, a spectacular rhythm section and 2 of the greatest voices ever. Best of all, we sounded good together. It was a natural fit. I can’t wait to play.”

No, from what I've read that really isn't the case. Those people that originally leaked the story out from insider knowledge said he just wanted a delay or the opportunity for a break in the tour and they just said no. They are also adamant he was fired and this is the line all the media outlets are now following.

This is just terrible. It doesn't matter what happened. When there is a conflict, WORK IT OUT. Respect the 40 years that a person has given to that band and the amount of work they've done and how much of their own solo effort they sacrificed for the band and WORK IT OUT. Do whatever it takes to come to a resolution. Don't just FIRE someone. They were almost over anyways! And it's an injustice to the devoted fans.
Unfortunately I'm starting to worry that the Stevie ultimatum "me or him" was true and that's what really led to it. I don't doubt Lindsey caused trouble when he asked for whatever he asked for or disagreed with in regards to the tour, but they should've handled it better.

The 1987 band was palatable for several reasons;
Lindsey wanted to leave.
They were relatively unknown artists- filling up the band with semi-famous names from other bands is such a lame thing to do.
They were still relatively young and had plenty of time to develop in future as proper recording artists.
For some reason bringing people in from other bands just makes me think of a slew of 90's/00's boy bands that fill out their line up with notable members of other bands. Also (for British people), when that bloke from Dollar joined Bucks Fizz.

Fleetwood Mac boots Lindsey Buckingham before going on tour
Patrick Ryan, USA TODAY
Published 6:49 p.m. ET April 9, 2018 | Updated 7:07 p.m. ET April 9, 2018
Lindsey Buckingham is going his own way.
The guitarist/vocalist will not be touring with Fleetwood Mac on its upcoming world tour, according to a press release sent to USA TODAY by Kristen Foster, a representative for the band.
"Lindsey Buckingham will not be performing with the band on this tour," the statement reads. "The band wishes Lindsey all the best."
No reason was given.
Buckingham, 68, joined the group in 1974 with then-girlfriend Stevie Nicks, and has been its frequent frontman and sometime songwriter for most of the years since. He wrote and sang hits such as Go Your Own Way and Tusk.
He previously left the band from 1987 to 1996, and was inducted with them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
In his place, Neil Finn of Crowded House and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers will tour with Fleetwood Mac this fall. They'll be joined by longtime members Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood.

Unfortunately I'm starting to worry that the Stevie ultimatum "me or him" was true and that's what really led to it.
When she starts writing songs for the next album that she definitely doesn't want to do as nobody will buy it she should consider 'It's me or him' as a song title.

the sh&tty part of this is the incredible "don't let the door hit you on the way out" attitude from the band.
I'll say it again, if Stevie, whom I've adored forever, told the band she wanted to do her stuff and not the band's tour, and the band sent out a statement saying "we've replaced her and wish her well" most of the chiffoners would be screaming bloody murder.
Or if they'd actually replaced Chris after she left and had someone come in and sing her songs. Funny the band just wouldn't do that for Chris's songs, but will apparently do that with Lindsey's songs. Look, I know he can be a total a-hole at times, but that's just cold and heartless man

As a Fleetwood Mac fan of 40 years, I am just HEARTSICK. No one has died here, so I cannot compare this to the death of John Lennon, but it certainly comes close.
I have a deep sense in the pit of my stomach that this is the END. I think whatever brought about this conflict was the final straw for all involved. I DO NOT see the Rumours lineup EVER recording or touring together again. It's a sorrowful day. This band was given an opportunity to record a final album and give its fans a proper Farewell Tour, but they chose to take the low road.
As Don McLean proclaimed, "the day the music died" is upon us. I'm just heartsick.

I can remember the beauty and energy of Out of the Cradle being the perfect antidote to the uninspired blandness and mess of over 90% of Behind the Mask.
I hope Lindsey does the same thing again, even if only the cognoscenti appreciate it . Too bad that the prospects of getting an album out of Fleetwood Mac#14 to compare it against may well be no higher than they were before the second parting. Don't get me wrong, I would be intrigued by the possibility of an album from the new sextet.
As I've alluded to before, maybe the band's statement about Lindsey not participating in this tour has been deliberately carefully worded and leaves open the possibility of a later return after the latest hired hands are let go. Will Finn and Campbell be full, legal, members of Fleetwood Mac? I doubt it.
But it would be ever-diminishing artistic returns, with no new music and some band members pushing 80, even if the five reconvened.
Oy vey, oh well.

the sh&tty part of this is the incredible "don't let the door hit you on the way out" attitude from the band.
Look, I know he can be a total a-hole at times, but that's just cold and heartless man
I am a massive Stevie fan, I can’t stand Lindsey, but what happened is outrageous. The statement from the “band” makes me sick. I hope the tour tanks and have no idea why anyone would buy a ticket to that hot mess. All FM fans should be disgusted.

Oh my, it's been years since I've been here. What a day. It's a lot to take in, and surely there will be more to come out, but my thoughts as the afternoon has gone on.
-At the end of the day, it's sad that things are going down this way. Too bad that we didn't know that the last time you saw them live, if you did, that it would be the last time. Lindsey is a legendary talent, and you can't even enumerate what he brought to this band
-I have to say though, the vitriol directed at Stevie on this board. Yikes. I know this is the internet, and I'm no shrinking violet, but ooo boy. It's a little scary. Ultimately, my gut instinct is that this game down to a game of chicken regarding whether Lindsey would commit to going on tour, and they called his bluff. But, if it is because Stevie said, at 70 years old, I can't/won't commit to spending 6 months in a studio in this man, or time on the road with this man, I have to say, I get it. I love Stevie, and I love Lindsey, in a way that a stranger can love an artist who produces music they love. But, all evidence points to Lindsey being at the very least emotionally abusive to Stevie for many years. Is she a peach? Ohhh heck no. But, as a woman, sometimes I'm amazed she put up with him as long as she had. And if Christine was standing behind her on that, I would respect that too. But all that said, I think that's a long shot for the real reason. But regardless, people being so vicious towards Stevie is just....I don't know.
-In terms of seeing Fleetwood Mac again, my initial instinct, was no way. But as I thought about it, I began to think, is it wise to cut off your nose to spite your face? Do I sacrifice seeing Christine and Stevie, who I continue to admire and love to see perform, when it's just the truth that they're getting older? I don't think I can do that. (There's also a huge curiosity to see what it will be like) But I'm blessed to be able to buy a ticket without much strain. If it's an investment in this age of ridiculous ticket prices for you to go and it's not worth it if Lindsey's not going to be there? Man I get that.
-And then, at the end of the day, I remember that these are five rich white people, they're all going to be fine, we're all going to be fine, and I'm going to see Beyonce in August so really it's all gravy.
Alright troops, best to you all, and congrats to making in through today!

Well said....

I don't want to solely blame any one band member for this fiasco. They're all at fault due to stubborn attitudes. I truly believe that Lindsey held out on them, which is exactly what Stevie did previously. He was trying to teach her a lesson and it backfired. At that point, the band should have waited for him to do his thing. The fact that they chose to go on the road without him was the final stab! Truly unbelievable! If anything, Stevie and Lindsey are mostly to blame, but all hold an equal share because someone could've said "no".

Going against the grain here, but I'm ok with this after being in shock initially. FM has always had personnel changes and Buckingham really gave the impression he hated being in FM recently. He is free and can do as he pleases now. Even though I follow his solo career, his voice gets on my nerves sometimes (especially recently), coming off whiny quite a bit. It's interesting how so many people comment on sites how he's so underrated...blah, blah, blah. But his solo work and tours dictate he isn't a huge seller (not that it matters)...if these people think he's so great....where are they on album and tour support?
Mike Campbell is awesome and Neil Finn has a great voice....I admit, kinda curious. I don't know...everyone is so old now. I think I'm still confused.

Fleetwood Mac is honored in the same way and they go off and fire one of their defining, core members. So sad.
I'm speechless at Mick but not shocked. Anyone who has watched Destiny Rules can see how two faced he was with Lindsey. One minute talking about a double album with Lindsey then completely mocking him when talking to his manager.
The only reason he hasn't betrayed Stevie since 1991 is because they had a fling in 1978 and both have a penchant for any money they can get.
It's ironic how much Stevie adores Tom Petty. She should of taken a few pages from his playbook and get back to the music. This band will never have the class and dignity that tom and the heartbreakers did.

One of the comments on TMZ says:
I don't think I can take "The Fleetwood Mac Grandparent Drama Tour"
Emotionally, it's a replay of 1987. (What was the name of that movie where the person kept waking up and reliving the day over and over?) Next year, we'll get a Greatest Hits CD with a couple of lame new songs on it and an orange blossom on the cover, followed by a full album produced by a heavy metal guy with a tin ear, followed by a world tour with several of the members on steroids and putting on weight. The band will go out with a slow-motion explosion and a wing nut, probably playing the second-tier stage at the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl.

And what are they thinking? What kind of farewell tour is this? If Stevie isn't going to record another Fleetwood Mac album because albums don't sell what's the point of getting new members? What "creative evolution" of the band is this?
But this is as expected. This band is going down in flames. They will reap the wind they sowed.

Why is all the disdain being flung just at Stevie (and Mick a little)? Christine McVie leaves the band for 16 years, jumps back in after the band (including Stevie) keeps going, rides high on the “Christine is back” wave, does an album/tour with her pal Lindsey, and then tosses him to the curb along with everyone else.
They all suck.

The funniest part is seeing people say “i’m so sick of this band’s drama” right before saying how they’re throwing away all their cd’s and erasing them from their homes for breaking their hearts. Y’all are far more dramatic than anybody in this band. It’s not healthy how much you grown adults whine and moan over a bunch of senior citizens you don’t even know. They’re just a band doing the best they can to curb the constant turmoil so they can continue to play for us. Don’t like this incarnation of the band? Don’t go see the tour then. More seats for the rest of us. But the drama and the blame game is way overkill.

You know what this reminds me of---when Stevie married Kim in her grief stricken state after Robin died. Could Mike Campbell be having his own "Stevie married Kim due to extreme grief" moment here? 1) Is this a goodbye tour, as has been stated in a few of the reports?
2) John has said numerous times that he can't see himself doing this past 75....that's just two and a half years away. If John still feels that way, how much can they get done in that period?
3) Mick has said repeatedly that the one person he couldn't continue the band without is John. Would that still stand in two years...or would money talk?
4) After the amazing time they seemed to have had working and touring together, how does Christine feel about this (If the band voted, I would think it would have to be 3-1, with Chris objecting)?
5) If this isn't a farewell tour, could Stevie be convinced to record again? I would
think Mike, Neil and Chris would want to see that.
6) Why was the band willing to put everything on hold so that Stevie could go off and do her 24 Karat tour, yet they're not willing to extend the same courtesy to Lindsey? I mean, it's not like there's any hurry...they've already missed their 50th anniversary....unless it has something to do with point #2.

Stevie and the band deserved a break after touring from 2013 - 2015. I don’t believe Stevie’s break was any kind of “delay” but rather a regular break (which they all got). It seems they all decided to reconvene this year (Lindsey mentioned this himself) but Lindsey had a change of heart last minute and pulled out. Had Stevie done the same thing, I’m sure she would have been met with a similar response. The only difference with Stevie being that most promoters would be much more likely to consider FM sans Lindsey than sans Stevie.
I hope we do get an actual reason from them soon though.

I have three initial comments after reading (most of) this thread.
1. Even the rumors about the rumors say that Mick fired Lindsey, not that Stevie did. If Stevie didn't want to work with Lindsey she would either a) not work with Lindsey, a la Buckingham McVie, or b) confront Lindsey herself, since we know she has no problem doing that. I think Lindsey would leave of his own accord before Stevie would have the sole authority to fire him.
2. Going off the above, Stevie said in numerous interviews that she should have quit with Lindsey in the 80s. She said she even told him as much, that she did not want to be in the band without him. So... why do people think the situation is any different now than it was then? The band has committed to a tour, Lindsey backed out last minute, possibly violating contractual obligations, and the band is held to their commitment so they have find two new people last minute. As for Mike Campbell, is it so far fetched that Stevie and Mick are desparately trying to save this tour and reaching out to anyone who might be able to help? The alternative - that they sought to replace Lindsey and usher in a new incarnation of FM with these members - again, makes no sense.
3. The press announcement quoted in the articles (although I have not seen the entire release from the alleged FM representative) says that Lindsey will not be joining the band on the tour. It doesn't say that he quit the band forever. So what if he is doing what Stevie did with Buckingham McVie, and simply opting out? Buckingham McVie was its own thing because they were touring and releasing music under a different name. However, Fleetwood Mac minus Lindsey is touring solely on the Fleetwood Mac catalog.
The part that makes the least sense to me is the reports that Lindsey was fired. Either these headlines are woefully misleading or (most likely) there is a huge behind the scenes aspect of this that we are missing.
If Lindsey was "fired" from the band, he would have needed to offend more than just one member, and badly. If Stevie is as greedy as everyone here seems to think she is, she would want this "cash grab" tour and then play the martyr later for enduring it. She has zero incentive to get rid of Lindsey, her onstage romance partner, her tumultuous on again/off again love affair, her backstage nemesis, her studio dictator... Seriously. If she didn't want to tour with him, she would withhold herself and tour on her own like she did last year. Even if you hate her, what does she have to gain from roping in all the other members of FM, including Mick who allegedly did the actual firing, to get rid of Lindsey, who is her scene partner for all of the onstage chemistry that we expect, and the subject of almost, if not all, of her FM songs and stories?
This could be Lindsey's ego, his temper, or even his creativity getting in the way. We have no idea what happened.

He offered. It wasn't like the time Paul Simon sang Mrs. Robinson to me during sound check when I was standing in the VIP area all by myself. He and Bob Dylan had been standing on the stage a few minutes prior singing Ring of Fire. But then Bob left to get Chinese food. I guess he was hungry.

Who's managing Lindsey these days? I thought it was Azoff. I thought he was also managing the band....which was weird... in the pressers today it stated Carl Stubner (Mick's manager -- is he Chris's now too?) and Sheryl Louis (Stevie's manager) are managing the band.
Now that's a total takeover. Stevie gets her manager managing the band, plus gets a new ally in Mike who will always side with her. Game of Thrones has nothing on this band.
Remember when her PR Liz Rosenberg was supposed to also be repping the band? And then there was a RS cover story on *just* Stevie during the middle of a BAND tour??? hmmmm.....

Being able to see FM live for the first (and last) time in 2004 was a big thrill that I wouldn't want to begrudge any new fans, but given the reality of these performers as living individuals who have to haul ass all over the world, strain their vocal cords for hours every night, and put up with each other and the rest of the circus on a day-in day-out basis, I wish they would just go the way of, say, ABBA--let the fans enjoy the excitement and pleasure of experiencing their songs live through official vehicles like the Mamma Mia musical, while the actual legends themselves mostly refrain from the grueling tours and just appear in a variety of occasional fun group and individual projects, their reputations, legacy, fanbase, and health all the more intact for it.

Hi everyone,
I feel that this is one of the few places to process this information where people might understand what I'm feeling. This is just ghastly. I was in an 8 hour work orientation meeting today with ability to check emails only on scattered breaks throughout the day. I only saw the news at 4:00, and had about a minute to speed read and digest one article. After putting away my phone, I had tears in my eyes and had to wipe them away while trying to focus on my meeting content.
Having been a 7 year old in 1977 (!) who immediately latched onto Fleetwood Mac, the "Fab 5" lineup has been my lifelong favorite. Later, I explored Mac's back catalog, and became admirers of the pre BN incarnations as well. However, in 1987 regarding the upcoming tour, I had a difficult time enjoying FM without Lindsey's participation. I bought the next FM album, did not like it as much, and my interest in their present work (1990) waned. I just focused on the back catalog. In an age without the Internet, it seemed to me that it was much harder to keep Fleetwood Mac in my day-to-day life than it is today. So, at the time I did not think there was much chance for a reconvening. I found solace in my old vinyl, VHS tapes, and looking at old magazine articles/concert programs.
What a happy day years later when they decided to reunite! It seemed that there was hope for a long future---they weathered difficult times, and seemed to have gratitude for the public's long-standing affection for them.
It's been a shame that difficulties between them have gotten to the point of being too unpleasant for some band members to endure, and compromises have to be made that violate a sense of integrity. It seems quite a distance from the five people who originally delighted in their ability to click together musically in such an uncanny way.
All this to say is that it is hard for me to believe/accept that today's news is how it stands. I am having a tough time understanding what might have happened recently that brought things to such a head. My understanding was that in 2017, all members were on the public record as saying there would be a big world tour in 2018. I was surprised when I heard that Lindsey wanted to do a solo album/tour in 2018. I wondered how he would have the time after Buckingham/McVie wrapped the tour in November 2017, and before the tour rehearsal. I was puzzled, but cautiously optimistic, and very much looking forward to a year that was going to bring a Sirius channel, new LB solo album, and big tour.
Not knowing full details of how far one books tours for such a major band, I would assume (which is dangerous!) that signatures would have to be on contracts at some point in 2017 for promoters to book venues, plan a tour itinerary, in order for all members to be able to plan their professional commitments. If there was some kind of contractual obligation where they were on the hook for a tour, you would think they would have to honor the contract or perhaps face financial penalties if they backed out. (Maybe there's a lawyer on this Board who knows!) So, if Lindsey wasn't prepared to participate in touring, and the band had to honor a "Fleetwood Mac" tour, maybe FM's hand was legally forced. What a pickle to be in.
As one of the Variety articles stated, it would have been more tactful to say that Lindsey was not participating in this year's tour. That's less drastic and final, and leaves opportunities for partnership open after tour obligations. By leaving it open like this, Lindsey's reputation would not be damaged by using words like "fired". That's a harsh word to use and could really tarnish his "brand"/reputation.
I can see that the casual "public" would be confused if Fleetwood Mac minus Lindsey is out there touring, and Lindsey is simultaneously playing as a solo act. Again, what a mess and tough situation to be in for all concerned. Even without giving the public all the details of what happened, there could have been a more diplomatic way to release the information so as to honor his history with the band.
I'm devastated. It's a shame that something could not have been worked out to preserve the LB/SN era of Fleetwood Mac. Especially in light of Tom Petty's passing. The death of an age-peer like that is often a wake-up call where you appreciate loved ones and realize that we're all mortal and have to go at some point. One never knows the future regarding health issues, and this tour could be the last due to those reasons. It makes me sad to think with that consideration in mind, the conflict could not be resolved. My only solace is the phrase (paraphrasing), "Lindsey is not joining us on this tour." With luck, maybe he will join them again down the line, if everyone's health/willingness to be road-warriors holds up.
All this information is hard to swallow. I respect Mike Campbell's musicianship, and I don't have much familiarity with Neil Finn. I guess what's difficult for me to work through is having a band member replaced when that person is still alive. I have an easier time understanding continuing on with the legacy of a band if members have passed away, and new members are added. But, it is harder for me to embrace that if something cannot be worked out when all are still healthy and have the ability to perform as a band.
I'm working my way through this, and am not sure how I'm going to be feeling about the whole thing as time goes on. I'm grateful for the Internet (for the most part!) to be able to share thoughts with a Fleetwood Mac fan base that understands, the ability to listen to all these great bootleg recordings of the band and its members, read old reviews, and see great photos of the past. Why, my Fleetwood Mac collection has grown considerably even in the last decade thanks to the Internet!
As so many have said, I love this combination of artists so much, and it saddens me greatly that this was confirmed today.
I send lots of love to LB and his family---what a difficult couple of months it must have been for them. I send good wishes to everyone hurting in this group, too.
Thanks for bearing with my long post---I had to get it out here.

I did not even one post here, sorry, I just can't by now. How is that even possible from people around 70? I don't care what Lindsey said or did offstage, this is just an embarrassment. And two replacement guitarists - didn't FM learn anything? I see they are now the background band Stevie wanted for so long. Noone will ever question her, control her or tell her what to do. She must be in heaven. I'm not exactly awaiting her dramatic interview where she shares her suffering during the last 40 years, but well, that is what is going to happen anyway.
This is the end of my 41 years with FM, sad, but not without a benefit, I will save so much money when they tour, since I'm not going to throw one cent even in the general direction of this FM revival band, since they don't even do it for the fun, they do it for the money. Not with me.
I have only one question: Why, Christine? Is she legally tied to FM?
This makes me especially sad/mad. I cannot understand why she would do an album and go on tour with Lindsey, only to stand against him with the rest of the band now.

I wonder how all of those who tell people to give this lineup a chance would feel if it was Stevie who was thrown out. I bet you would be able to hear the screaming from Betelguese. There would be a shortage of lizard tongues and chicken livers while they cast their spells around the boiling cauldron.
Currently, I would say that throwing Stevie out would have been the far more logical and understandable action. No matter what happened between the bandmembers (and I'm not thinking that a simple Stevie/Lindsey spat/fight made this happen), Lindsey has been the backbone of this band for so long, while Stevie indulged whenever she felt like it, without any real interest or input. Her nagging over the last years, her diva behaviour often unprofessional, sometimes harmful to FMs legacy, while Lindsey played his ass off. I feel that FM without Stevie would still be an integer band, whereas FM without Lindsey is just, well, nothing but a cover band/Stevie background band.

Could Christine’s participation have anything to do with the fact that she told the band (not just Lindsey) that she wouldn’t leave again? Even though his concerns likely prompted her to say she wouldn’t leave again saying so could have left her in a tough spot with the rest of the band after he himself was out. When she always thanks the band for allowing her to come back she’s thanking the other four too. Not saying I don’t wish she didn’t go along with it just saying this could have been an issue

You're right, Fleetwood Mac with Lindsey and without Stevie would have kept their artistic integrity intact, even at the cost of sales. Fleetwood Mac without Lindsey is just a bloated and hideously expensive karaoke act. Even the tribute bands would probably be more fun to watch.
Did Mick threaten to fire Stevie for making 24 KG and touring on it while refusing to participate in the last Fleetwood Mac album? No. But Lindsey wanting to make his own solo record? Goodbye and "best wishes" (not even a thank you by the way).

My preference would be LMJC, but as someone who has been in situations where someone in the band was clearly not working out, Lindsey’s behavior around the Classic shows and the public badmouthing of Classic West prior to the show would have been more than enough reason for him to get the axe. His lack of enthusiasm was apparent during the videos I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a few guys get fired for that.

I agree....why was it so vital to work around Stevie and her schedule, to the point that they had to change a Fleetwood Mac album into a Buckingham/McVie
album instead of just saying "Stevie won't be joining us on this album."
Plus....Lindsey's album was pretty much done and supposedly due out in January....then March.....then April....then shelved until next year....which leads me to believe that something's been going on for a while! One other thought pertaining to my above post.....a Stevieless FM would never happen....she's the main cash draw.
This is backed up by the fact that they weren't willing to release the B/M album as a FM album....you think they would risk rocking the boat on a full world tour (which I'm betting is going to be a lot smaller and shorter than originally planned) when they wouldn't even do it for one album?!?

It can hardly be denied that Lindsey often says provocative and inappropriate things. Heck, over the years he has repeatedly said he would rather be somewhere else than with the Mac. But nonetheless he did do his job. He hated every minute of doing so and was not shy about saying so, but he rescued Tango in the Night from what would have been an album that would have made Time look like a masterpiece. He may badmouth the band, but he showed up for work nonetheless, unlike the "icon" who thought it better for her to violate Australian immigration laws just to sing with Tom Petty while her band was recording a new album.
Why doesn't anyone say anything when the "icon" complains about the band, as she has often done? Has Lindsey said anything so outrageous and insulting as the icon did when she dissed SYW? The demos were better? Oh please. Plonk plonk plonk on the piano better than Lindsey's studio magic?
Frankly I could not care less if the band want to strangle each other after every concert. What I am disgusted by is their clear disregard of the wishes of the fans--was there any clamour for the inclusion of Neil Finn in the band? They knew the fans wanted a Rumours 5 farewell tour, and they chose not to give it to us. Who do they think funded their multi-million dollar mansions, money falling from trees?

I just can’t believe this. At this point in their career. Really!? They just got Christine back. How are you going to go out without Lindsey? Either way it’s messed up. If Lindsey quit, it’s messed up that he would leave now, when it’s reaching the end of Fleetwood Mac’s career. Same goes for if he was “fired”, how can you fire Lindsey now, you just got Christine back, you can’t end like this. I’m very grateful that I saw them twice in 2014-2015 and at the Classic West last summer. How can they not come to an agreement at this point in time. Christine and John are like 75, Lindsey is the youngest one. He has time to go do solo stuff after one last Fleetwood Mac tour. This is definitely going to hurt ticket sales. I’m actually really surprised Mick and Stevie are willing to tour without Lindsey. Im sure those two are the most aware of the novelty of the five of them. It’s also messed up that when Christine wanted to rejoin, Lindsey was the one that said “you can come back, but you can’t leave again.”

There is a pinhead article going around that is not worthy of posting. It says Fleetwood Mac is bigger than Lindsey Buckingham and Lindsey does not make the band. Of course the Mac is bigger than Lindsey. But Lindsey gives the Mac its sound and creativity especially live. Would anyone say removing Eddie Van Halen from Van Halen or Angus Young from AC DC would not be a big deal.
Also, this is their swan song. To kick out their guitarist and do the goodbye tour with replacements is so wrong. Crowded Mac House.

You know what this reminds me of---when Stevie married Kim in her grief stricken state after Robin died. Could Mike Campbell be having his own "Stevie married Kim due to extreme grief" moment here? A perfect storm of two deeply wounded people coming together. But what would Tom Petty think about this? Mike and Tom were/are friends with Lindsey not just Stevie.

I was listening to some old material where SnL were really going back and forth and I was thinking, not only will I miss the musical blend, but I will miss the interactions as well. I'm not just talking about the staged stuff - although I did enjoy that - but when they sang to each other, and when Stevie ramped it up as a result... it was really cool to have the subjects of the song onstage with each other singing passionately, and it was something that was almost unique to Fleetwood Mac.
Is she going to sing Silver Springs to the freaking guy from Crowded House? How lame and laughable is that going to be? They can drop that, of course, but she can't drop every song about Lindsey or she'll lose half her catalogue. We've come to expect onstage performance along with the music at a Fleetwood Mac show. Now that will be gone. I for one will miss it.... that is, if I even go at all.

But the five members of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood were a unit that was off the charts amazing.
No matter whom you blame...... for them not to create new music and then fire Linsdey..
The news deeply saddens me. A large testament that commerce has completely taken over what used to be a unique and beautiful creation of a band.

While I'm as ticked off as everyone else that my favorite Mac member has been shown the door, I am a bit intrigued by the idea of Neil Finn joining the band. It would be great if they throw one or two Split Enz chestnuts into the set list! Would love to hear Christine playing Eddie Raynor's keyboard solo on "I Got You"!
I don't know much about Neil Finn or Crowded House except for their two most popular songs. I understand Neil has been critically acclaimed. Since you're more familiar with his work, I was hoping you could provide a little more insight, BlanketMan. Are Neil and Lindsey similar at all, vocally, for example? How do you think Neil could handle Go Your Own Way? Might Neil do a good job with Bob Welch material, like Hypnotized or Sentimental Lady?
I kind of suspect Neil will be a replacement vocally for Bob Welch, with only 2-3 LB songs, which would really surprise folks!

Guys with equal status?
It can hardly be denied that Lindsey often says provocative and inappropriate things. Heck, over the years he has repeatedly said he would rather be somewhere else than with the Mac. But nonetheless he did do his job. He hated every minute of doing so and was not shy about saying so, but he rescued Tango in the Night from what would have been an album that would have made Time look like a masterpiece. He may badmouth the band, but he showed up for work nonetheless, unlike the "icon" who thought it better for her to violate Australian immigration laws just to sing with Tom Petty while her band was recording a new album.
He publicly badmouthed a gig that promoters were trying to sell and proceeded to half-ass the show. It doesn’t matter if he’s an equal partner or that he showed up, things like that ultimately have consequences.

The closest Neil sounds to any of the past members is Danny Kirwan, only Neil has a much stronger voice.

So it's not OK for Lindsey to badmouth anybody, but the icon can smear her own band's CD? Prey tell, where were the consequences of her mocking SYW?

I remember on the On with the Show tour the icon was very loudly complaining to the media about the scheduling of the shows. Did she suffer any consequences then? But even the wealthiest promoter must bow to the icon, or else.

Hmmm, interesting questions. If I had to pick the most similar aspect of Finn's and LB's musical abilities, it would probably be their songwriting more so than their vocal stylings or guitar-playing. They both write easy-on-the-ears pop songs that can be both pleasing-to-the-masses and chock full of deeper "I'm much smarter than you think" meaning.
But vocally? I don't see them as especially similar. I'm trying to picture 2018 Finn singing "Go Your Own Way"... Maybe check out a couple of Crowded House's more rocking tunes (for them at least) like "Locked Out" or "I Walk Away" (which he also recorded with Split Enz) to hear Finn tearing into a tune that's kinda close to that vein...? But Finn sings a lot of great ballads, like "Don't Dream It's Over," "Message to my Girl," "One Step Ahead"... LB doesn't really sing those kinds of songs with FM. Still, they are both chameleons and I'm confident that Finn can handle the duties. He might not sound like LB but he'll do a solid job. As upset I am about LB's departure, I'm still very curious to hear what they sound like with the new guys.

The news of the past couple of days has been truly heartbreaking. I'm not a huge Lindsey Buckingham fan, but he has been (and always will be, no matter what) the musical genius who has kept Fleetwood Mac relevant and pushed them forward. Without him, the new iteration of "Fleetwood Mac" is really just a glorified karaoke band.
I'm very torn about supporting this new tour. Though I love Stevie and Christine, I'm having a hard time imagining Mike Campbell and, especially, Neil Finn fitting in. Though they are talented writers and musicians, their sound is not Fleetwood Mac. I just can't imagine Neil singing such iconic Lindsey songs as "Big Love" and "Never Going Back Again." I imagine that they'll eschew lots of big Lindsey songs for older, pre-Buckingham Nicks material (much like they did in 1987-88). And, sorry, but I don't want to hear a "Fleetwood Mac" version of "Don't Dream It's Over" or "Better Be Home Soon," regardless of how good those songs are.
I'll say that Neil's voice is still incredibly strong, and he may actually put Stevie and Christine to shame in the vocals department.
I hope that Stevie gets herself in shape (how about losing 15 pounds), works on her voice so that she's not just droning on, and puts a hell of a lot more energy into her performance (and she better not bring out those awful Frankenbocks) because she's going to be the focal point and the expectations will be high.
I'm truly sad that the Rumours 5 couldn't put their differences aside and leave fans with fond memories of a kick-ass final tour. Now Fleetwood Mac will most likely go out as a joke. What a horrible way for them to be remembered.

This hurts.
I can't believe I see 'fired' and 'Lindsey' in the same sentence.
A farewell tour with new members? huh?
Shocked and sad. I love Fleetwood Mac. This feels like a nail.

I think Neil Finn is a fantastic musician. I've been following him since his Split Enz ("I Got You") and Crowded House ("Don't Dream It's Over, "Something So Strong") days. His songwriting and sound are often compared to Lennon and McCartney. Even though I'll miss Lindsey on the upcoming tour, I'm really looking forward to what Neil will bring to the band dynamic.
What I really love about the Crowded House community is their forward-thinking policy about recording shows. All of them are recorded and most have been made available through the fan club.
Here's one of my favorite songs from Neil.

I agree with who said that this line-up is surely a rapid makeweight stand-in, however now that I've slept on it and I have a clearer mind I wonder if it's possible that it was Lindsey that gave an ultimatum of some sort to the band.
Yes there are a lot of missing pieces to this story... It will be interesting to see who talks first...him or them. You know the minute they start giving interviews to promote the tour and all that they will get asked a million questions. Stevie will give a canned answer with a totally straight face that lots of people will buy. Mick as well although when pressed he gets more stammery and hems and haws more than she would. She can glide right through a bullsh*t story. She believes she is so good at playing the role and selling her version of things.....because, well, she is.
I will not be surprised if we learn that Lindsey made some sort of ultimatum, whether it was first or in response to something/someone else. I'm trying to imagine what was going on in rehearsals to where she said "that's it I can't work with him anymore"? He wanted a set schedule for rehearsals, not all night hanging out parties? Did he criticize her performance/singing? Did he object to bringing in more people from her solo band (singers/musicians?) People forget it takes TWO to make a relationship dysfunctional.

I still don't understand why everyone is so sure that it all came from Stevie since it surely takes at least five to fire someone from the band; however I meant a scenario where, for example, Lindsey wants to postpone the tour because he wants some time off to work on his next solo album and tour (like Stevie did), but the band doesn't comply because partial preparations have already been made (which I suppose would lead to contractual -both financial and legal- problems), so Lindsey puts his foot down and give an ultimatum like "give me my free time or I'm out". The band members think he's bluffing so they don't yield and he goes out the door; everyone has to find a last minute substitution(s) for Lindsey on this goddamn tour and the rest is history.
Of course this is just a possible scenario, but it's consistent with the band's power play dynamics. I should write fanfictions.

They are a beautiful family - maybe Stella is home doing homework. Maybe they are members of The Ledge at this point. Some folks here react as if they are the children of this band, but we are just part of the vast fan base that pays money to see them perform and made them wealthy. (and don't kid yourself - they are wealthy. Too wealthy and not hungry.)
There are so many IFs in many posts of this 40 page thread. IF this is about something Lindsey said, this should be able to be negotiated. Get rid of the Tom Petty "I Won't Back Down" mentality and work it out. IF this is really about Lindsey wanting to tour solo during the Fleetwood Mac album, why not do it afterward and seize the day on the bounce he will get from people discovering and rediscovering him with the FM tour.
IF this is about Lindsey. I remember The Dance and how Stevie capitalized on it by immediately doing a three month outing for the Enchanted boxed set. Lindsey sat on the album that he had been tooling in his garage/basement/rain room/trailer/somewhere and missed on a great opportunity. At the same time, right after The Dance, he had a new baby to consider. That would not be a good time to go on the road.
IF this is about touring without an album, it's too late to litigate this again (and it's been rehashed ad nauseum on this website)- they cannot manage to put out an album in 3 months IF Lindsey is behind it. He is a master at the guitar but he is a known tinkerer, finesse-er, craftsman. It drove John crazy. Stevie as well. Mick and Christine didn't seem to mind as much. No one will put years into an album as Lindsey has. Many other bands put out an album in a much shorter time. They go into the studio with an album that is done. Time is short for all of them. John just had a major health scare. Lindsey has a family history of heart disease and lost a brother at a very young age.
We are not privy to what really goes on, at least not until someone in this band or associated with this band writes a book, and we don't believe those either. This band will do what it feels it needs to do. We will continue to dissect and caste blame. But it gets tiring, doesn't it?

Well CNN reports that it had to do with the music for the tour:
The representative would not provide any further details as to what led to his departure. A source close to the band told CNN that the split was "over musical differences regarding the tour." A representative for Buckingham referred questions to the band.
The article also ends with this:
Buckingham also spoke to CNN about his widely publicized breakup with Nicks, which took place while the band was recording Rumours.
"There was a time when I was certainly waiting for her to come back and she never did," Buckingham said. "Then I moved on eventually, it took a long time."
And it's sort of interesting that ever since the time he finally gave up that she would ever come back (late 90s) she's been less into FM, IMHO.

And then there was a RS cover story on *just* Stevie during the middle of a BAND tour??? hmmmm.....
Do we think Azoff left with Lindsey? If so, Fleetwood Mac not only lost a key member of their band, they really downgraded in terms of their management, too.

Hello all---
For what it's worth, we're getting something very different in Neil Finn. Anyone who's paid attention to Lindsey knows that, in spite of his passionate playing, he's very structured in terms of song arrangements and set lists and between-song banter.
Neil is quite the opposite. He's very spontaneous and loves interactive moments with the crowd. He thrives on them. He's known to frequently play requests for rare tunes from his extensive back catalog as well as the unexpected cover.
He's a very underrated guitarist and a talented keyboardist, too.
Here are a few samples from Neil's career.
Neil Finn - Loose Tongue
(A solo rocker.)

Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over
(Their best-known song in the US.)

Neil Finn - Dizzy Heights
(One of his newest tunes, this one has a nice R&B vibe.)

Crowded House - Private Universe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2xQniVgYrw&index=8&list=PLgRVldbJk_TOP3oo3PmmCSPllxZOJZB0z
Finn Brothers - Part of Me Part of You
(A great piano-driven rocker featuring some great harmonies.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc-9ZJ7ksAI
Crowded House - Weather With You
(Maybe their biggest hit outside the US. The layered percussion reminds me a little of something Lindsey might do.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZ3Ck43m_ZY
Finn Brothers - Angel's Heap
(Neil sings the higher harmony on this one.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go544-c5GrE
Pajama Club - These Are Conditions
(Something about the layers on this one always reminded me of a Lindsey production.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKa8xhcl6Bo
Crowded House - Instinct
(Not exactly one of their top songs, but the bassline sounds a lot like something John McView would play.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNzqu7GHLsE
Finn Brothers - Suffer Never
(A psychedelic rocker.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4_tAQKsfjk
Split Enz - History Never Repeats
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZXcYjI1-S8
Crowded House - Silent House (live 2007)
(This is a live version of a tune Neil wrote with the Dixie Chicks. I've always thought it had a Mac vibe to the music. The ending is a great example of his lead playing.)

Someone said they're now managed by Carl Stubner and Sheryl Louis so basically by Mick & Stevie.
I would say that I'm more of a Lindsey fan than a fan of any other member, though Chris runs him close. It is sad that things have gotten to this point, but I suspect that a full Rumours band tour was off the cards from some time ago. Probably what we are going to get is the best we can hope for.
SYW is one of my favourite FM albums, and it doesn't have Chris on it. (I think it would be far superior if it had the better songs from ITM on it.) So, while we're not getting what we might have, I think it's better than the nothing that may well have been the only realistic alternative.
It does seem odd that they would add someone known most of all for being a songwriter to the band if they never want to do anything new, but given the ages they are, it seems hard to envisage another album.
I'm looking forward to a new LM solo album. I think he's done some of his very best work solo.

Hmmm. I think he's going to have to reign it in. He'll need to get used to a rigid set list and rehearsed speeches. Mark my words, he wont get the freedom he's used to- Its not just Lindsey that likes the routine.
btw, I don't have an extensive knowledge of Neil Finn, but I remember Woodface was such a massive album here in the UK when I was a teenager. I really like Four Seasons In One Day.
On another note, Brian Johnson was also at Micks place earlier this year. I wonder if Brian was under consideration. I'd certainly take Neil Finn over Brian Johnson.

But if there's anything we know for sure about Fleetwood Mac, it's that they have no ability to control the torture they inflict on each other (or on us).
They are the band destiny has doomed to suffer for our sins, acting out every couple's messiest secrets in public, reliving every stage of the pain cycle in a ritual repetition, like five Siddharthas of heartbreak.
"Lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice"? They should be so lucky. Only these five gypsies could keep getting hit with the same lightning bolt over and over, electroshocking each other into eternity.

Now that its been one day to get over this Lindsey debacle I can say another thing.
This Crowded House guy sucks. I have no idea about his guitar skills but I hate his weak and wavering voice. For the love of God, those who love classic rock but hate the Mac because they are too wimpy. How about a man's voice as a singer?
Just like Lindsey's critique of Billy and Rick. You cant replace me so why try. Go in another direction. Gosh his voice is nails down a chalk board IMHO.

Many pop singers and musicians these days put out recordings with other performers and use the term "featuring." It's so common there is an accepted abbreviation ("ft."), for example, "Beyonce ft. Jay-Z" (random example). I don't have enough knowledge of the music biz to know why they do this, why they don't just call their collaboration "Beyonce and Jay-Z," but it seems to me that that's what Fleetwood Mac should do. They should call this new version of the band "Fleetwood Mac ft. Mike Campbell and Neil Finn."
If they did this, it would acknowledge that this band is still FM (which it is, as long as Mick and John are in the band), while revealing that there has been a major personnel change. To just go on calling this Fleetwood Mac without an explanation seems really inaccurate.
I will be really surprised if there is anything recorded with this configuation. I really hope there isn't, after we didn't get a final album from the Rumours lineup. I am not in the slightest bit interested in contributions from the new guys or from Stevie, and if Christine has any songs left in her I hope she saves them for BuckVie II.

Yes, the most notable example of this would probably be Queen ft Paul Rodgers, Queen ft Adam Lambert, Queen ft... etc.

I think you are being a bit unfair. I don't think Neil Finn is the right choice for Fleetwood Mac at this particular time, but to say he sucks is quite ridiculous. Through various bands/solo he's actually had more top 40 hit singles in the UK than Fleetwood Mac have had in total since 1967 (21 against 16).
I wouldnt say his voice is like nails down a chalk board, however I don't think its distinct enough to juxtapose against Chris and Stevie.

Just think he has the right sound, image, skills, etc.
He has (or at least had) a good rock voice that would have belted out some of the PG-era songs well. I also think he could have done justice to the likes of GYOW. As the principle male vocalist I just cant see Neil Finn singing those sorts of songs. Bryan Adams is also a very good guitarist. If they retained Neale Heywood they probably wouldn't have needed an additional guitarist/vocalist.

We all have different tastes in music Fuzzy ;)
I am aware of Crowded House and always hated them. I was I never a fan of the pop new wave of the late 1980s.
One thing we do agree on (whether we like him or not) is his voice just does not fit with Stevie and Christine.
Its so funny you mentioned Bryan Adams. In the mid-80's I used to fantasize the duet he did with Tina Turner (Its only love) was sung by Stevie or Chris. Play the song and picture each one singing with Bryan. I don't know who I would have picked but I think either would have done better than Tina.

Hello all---
Hmmm. I think he's going to have to reign it in. He'll need to get used to a rigid set list and rehearsed speeches. Mark my words, he wont get the freedom he's used to- Its not just Lindsey that likes the routine.
Oh, I think you’re absolutely correct. Neil is joining the circus. Hopefully someone told him there are two or three ringleaders. He’s a pretty easy-going yet confident guy, so I think he’ll be okay. I expect he’ll probably just ride the wave and enjoy it while it lasts. I can’t imagine anyone thinks this a long-term collaboration. Does anyone think that? The press release itself states that Lindsey isn’t involved in this particular tour. It doesn’t mention the future, does it?
Now that its been one day to get over this Lindsey debacle I can say another thing.
This Crowded House guy sucks. I have no idea about his guitar skills but I hate his weak and wavering voice. For the love of God, those who love classic rock but hate the Mac because they are too wimpy. How about a man's voice as a singer? Just like Lindsey's critique of Billy and Rick. You have every right to be unhappy about this whole situation. But I think it’s unkind to bash a guy that some of the people here like. Nobody is saying you can’t express your displeasure at the situation and your dislike for Neil Finn. But how about, “I don’t really care for his voice.” Or, “His style isn’t one that I enjoy.” If you’re feeling particularly angry, you could try, “He should stick to his own music and leave FM alone.”
But saying he “sucks” and has a “weak and wavering voice” that sounds like “nails down a chalk board” is crossing the line. I get it. You’re not happy, and you don’t like Neil. Fair enough. But there’s no reason to be ugly and disrespectful.
You suggest that the band get “a man’s voice as a singer.” Have you ever listened to Lindsey? Until he lost his top end and started shouting more, Lindsey’s range was similar to that of most female singers. Have you heard him sing “Crystal?” I know several people who thought it was a woman singing that song. And Lindsey often sings in a hushed whisper, not unlike the vocal style used by Finn on some of his ballads. On the other end of the spectrum, both of them resort to shouting on their louder tunes.
I’m not saying this to criticize Lindsey, because I like his voice and his vocal range. He’s the main reason I’ve stuck with FM all these years, and he’s the only member whose solo work I buy and whose solo show I’ve attended. But he has a not-very-masculine vocal range and an exceptionally idiosyncratic vocal style (using lots of effects and vari-speed).
I’m just saying he’s not exactly a mountain of manly vocals.

C'mon Matt. Its out of this world to call me disrespectful and ugly because I don't like Crowded House. They do suck. IMHO they are one of the worst bands I ever heard. I am allowed to have my opinion. Their music is dreary and not very musical IMHO. I don't like his voice and never did. I don't think I am being disrespectful at all. You are free to praise this choice and I don't judge you for it. His voice is like nails down a chalkboard for me. I don't care how many top 10 hits they had in the UK. Its sappy music plain and simple. They are not from the UK but became popular in that late 80s British new wave pop era. That is my least favorite music. IT SUCKS. You are free to disagree with my opinion without judging me ;)

Oh, I’m not judging you.
And now that you’ve pointed it out, I realize that I’VE stepped over the line, and I’m sorry for that. I said, “There’s no reason to be ugly and disrespectful.” What I meant to type was, “There’s no reason to say things that are ugly and disrespectful.” And there’s a difference. I don’t know you at all, but based on your comments in the forums, I genuinely believe that you are not an ugly or disrespectful person.
I also think there’s a difference between saying you don’t like something and saying it sucks. But, whatever. It’s not like discussing it is going to change your opinion of Neil Finn or how I perceive your criticism of Neil’s music.
If nothing else, we can hopefully agree that this news about Lindsey’s firing was a shock. The fact that we haven’t heard a response from him is somewhat curious. Is he waiting and watching to see how the fans and music media react? Is he keeping quiet and not burning any bridges, just in case he’s welcomed back at some point?
Fleetwood Mac has always been a band whose members brought in very different artistic strengths, and taking Lindsey out of the mix will have a huge impact. Neither Mike Campbell nor Neil Finn---both very good guitarists---is a Lindsey-level player. And neither of those guys prowls around the stage and owns it like Lindsey. So it will be a very different vibe when this new line-up takes the stage.
But the plus side is the band is getting two talented guys who can cover a lot of ground, musically, and their presence will probably ease a lot of the tensions.

Sorry, that's just me speculating.

More speculation on my part but as a guitar player Neil is a good songwriter, not a technician and you don't get someone with a distinctive style like Mike Campbell and ask him to play someone else's parts note for note so somebody else will have to be around in the background to play Lindsey's parts on most songs. Depends on what they play. I can see Mike doing his own thing yet still doing justice on "Dreams" but I can't see him playing "Little Lies" or Sara" or whatever note for note. Could he do it? Sure, he is a world class guitarist but that defeats the purpose of bringing in someone of his caliber.

Neil has taken his playing to a whole other level since Crowded House broke up back in the mid-1990s. As I said before, he's no Lindsey, but then, who is?
I'm confident that Neil can handle any of Lindsey's parts from the songs (unless they decide to cover those guitar instrumentals from OUT OF THE CRADLE!), and I know that Mike Campbell can as well.
Of the two of them, I'd say Campbell is the better (but more traditional) player, so I would expect that he will handle 75-90 percent of the lead work. And I think he will do well covering Lindsey's parts. He might not copy them note for note, but I think he'll convey the general mood of the parts. Same thing with Finn.
I think they both know their role, and neither of those guys is a glory-hound. They're both smart enough to know that they'd be fired if they stepped into Stevie's spotlight.

Lindsey will get to do what he wants.....new music and be happy.

Interesting, thanks.
In an update filed last night, things grew even murkier, as it appears the split happened because he wanted to focus on solo work, and the rest of Fleetwood Mac wanted to tour.
It appears that maybe my half-serious scenario wasn't that far from the truth. However they could have worked it out differently without anyone getting out of the band like they did in Stevie's case.
P.S However Billy Burnette has been a bit of a douchebag to leak the news.

I have to admit, I do agree with you on this. I feel that we as fans have been robbed of a final SLCJM album by Stevie's unwillingness or inability to record with Lindsey. Where the fault lies with that situation is a slightly more open question. The loss of that album is as difficult to accept as Buckingham's departure.
If we accept that that album was never going to happen, then maybe the possibility of a SCNMJM album is an intriguing one. However, the realist in me thinks that this line-up is being put together solely to earn tour dollars.
Already I feel my earlier avowal never to go to another Mac concert eroding , hopeless case that I am.
I'm obviously working my way through whichever stage of grief I find myself at.

Here's one of my favorite songs from Neil.

re: the Salon article. it states:
Yet this current lineup switch isn't a perfect analog to the situation three decades ago. If anything, it might be better.
Campbell and Nicks have a long musical history and chemistry, dating back to the early '80s, when the Heartbreakers played on her solo debut LP, "Bella Donna."
hmm.. so I guess Lindsey's big mistake was in not forging a strong relationship with another female singer that he could collaborate with on his solo albums, that when Stevie decided not to record anymore with FM he could just slide into place
She really does finally have exactly what she's wanted for a long time: complete and full control over FM. She wrested it from Lindsey who wrested it from Mick.

I think these Lindsey quotes from a 2012 Rolling Stone article regarding a possible Buckingham Nicks tour in the midst of a Fleetwood Mac tour are very telling about his feelings about doing two tours at a time...
It could be the specifics of the tour being proposed at the time but he seems very opposed to this type of idea logistically. He even mentions that it would dilute the "message". So I don't think he would have proposed anything like this for the Fleetwood Mac tour. All I can think of is that he issued an ultimatum that the band tour be delayed for his entire solo tour/album promotion or he's out, and at that point there was nothing the band could do to stop him. Even Christine might be on board if she thought he was being irrational and they had all previously agreed on the 2018 tour.
Oh, the old band with Waddy Watchtel. Wow. Well, listen, I would love to do a tour with Stevie. I think that would be very appropriate. She was talking about doing it in between legs of a Fleetwood Mac tour, which is not going to happen. It's logistically impossible. It's economically suicidal because you can't do enough touring it make it worthwhile.
[...]
I would have two scenarios. One would be to wait and put it out close to the end of the Fleetwood Mac tour. When the tour is done and go rehearse a proper show and do it. Another thing would be to go ahead and put out Buckingham Nicks as a sort of secondarily level of awareness around a Fleetwood Mac tour. It's a little off message, but that's fine. When the tour is done we can go into the studio and cut a new Buckingham Nicks album. That would be the most credible thing you can do. Then you'd have to enough material to do a whole show.

Stevie: “You’re gone because I said so”
i think that's exactly right - this might be what's behind this firing. finally, she wins. as that TP insider guy said - all the lingering LB-SN issues came to a head. indeed. she finally had the power.
and as some suggested, maybe he knew what they were potting at Musicares already and that's why he was even more sour than usual on that red carpet. maybe that's why he was trotting his gorgeous family there too.

that was not the case according to the rumors we heard. but who knows?
LB solo is very different from BN. because it's Nicks who needs days off in between tour nights. that's what Chrissie Hynde said too, that she'd get bored and insert headlining Pretenders dates in between to fill those days. LB solo does 4-5 nights in a row 1 off, than 4-5 again. FM usually does 2 in a row, rarely 3.

He is not a nobody or a hired hand who can be shunted aside. If "musical differences" emerge during rehearsals, for instance the icon wanting to dance for 20 minutes to every song and not just GDW, what is going to happen if Neil says no? Mike she can wrap around her finger as she has done since Bella Donna, but Neil? Will he endure her pretensions for the money?

I imagine it would be bye bye Neil. I don’t believe Stevie threw any weight around to kick Lindsey out, but if they are willing to continue on without Lindsey, I doubt they would have any problem replacing his replacements.

Hello all---
I haven't followed the career of Crowded House or Neil Finn closely, but all I know is that he has a very large following in NZ and Australia.
I'm sure Neil and Mike are being treated fairly from a financial standpoint, but I'm also sure they're working as hired sidemen and not official/permanent/contractual members.
With that in mind, I don't think money is the motivator here for either of them. They're both pretty successful guys. Mike has done well on Petty tours, but he's also cowritten a lot of songs with Petty and others like Don Henley, so he's getting publishing money, too. Neil has had a lot of success in his career. He could probably live very comfortably just on his publishing from Split Enz and Crowded House.
It appears most people here aren't huge Finn fans, but Neil has had a lot of success around the world. After CH's fame faded a bit in the US, they were HUGE in the UK in the early '90s. At one point, they were voted the top live act in the UK, which was no small feat with bands like U2 active at the time.
At first, I was confused about why Neil would accept Mick's offer. Why would he want to be thrust into the drama? But after I thought about it, I realized that most of Neil's work over the last 15 years has involved new collaborations and experiences. Last year, he released a somber but beautiful solo record that featured a string section and choir as well as a collaboration with an arranger. Prior to that, his efforts included a side project called Pajama Club (with his wife on bass), two 7 Worlds Collide releases (including members of Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Wilco, The Smiths, KT Tunstall, and many more), a tour and live record with famed Australian singer-songwriter (and friend) Paul Kelly, a few reunion shows with Crowded House to celebrate their 30th anniversary, and more. His newest (still unreleased) record is a duet record with his song, Liam.
So, when Neil said, "So many great songs, a spectacular rhythm section and two of the greatest voices ever," I think he was being honest. And, if you think about it, it's really quite an opportunity.
Has Mike Campbell made any statements? He's not quite as vocal, but he seems to thrive on the road, so I'm not surprised he's on board. It's a chance to head back out on tour with folks he (mostly) knows.

My stance on Campbell here is mixed.
1st I'm a big TP fan, so to see Campbell have an opportunity for some distractions on quick entrance back to the road is probably very good for him emotionally. On that end I can see why he was keen to join.
But secondly, he knows how the loss of Tom hurt so many fans he has to be aware he's a party to similar pain to many...many Fleetwood Mac fans.

Yes, Neil will endure her pretensions for the money. Make no mistake, this is all about the $$$$$.
Neil Finn is a clever, prolific creator of music. But this is an eneavour that's unlikely to yield new music in any significant capacity. I just cant see Neil being in this for artistic reasons. What is artistically rewarding about standing on a stage night after night singing other peoples' songs when you written and recorded dozens of your own critically acclaimed albums?
As successful as he's been, if he gets a fair share of the cut, a major Fleetwood Mac tour will yield more than he's probably earned for the past 10 years combined.
So yeah, he'll bow to Stevie.

Oh to be Neil Finn's financial adviser at this time... Stevie said in one of her commentaries to her videos I think that Rick Vito is a smart man who did very well out of his FMac stint, and I hope Finn and Campbell do to. There is certainly no artistic compensation for this. I guess a gig's a gig, even for the great.

Yeah, he'll be getting more worldwide exposure than he's had since the 1980s. But creatively speaking, I don't see much in it for him. I mean, I assume he's a big FM fan, so jamming with them on stage every night would presumably be an enjoyable endeavor. Vince Gill joining the Eagles last year seems like a similar situation. Gill had a pretty huge career in a certain niche, but the Eagles gigs gave him more notoriety than he's had in ages. And he was also very successful before the Eagles came calling - we could ask him why he did it, too. Probably a combination of getting to work with people he's admired, performing music he greatly enjoys, getting his name out there on a level it hadn't been in a long time... and earning some serious coin in the process. What's the downside for either man? Squelching their inner muse?
So while I don't necessarily think it's *all* about the $$$ for Gill or Finn, I don't think "creative expression" is high on the list, either.

this is like a nightmare alternauniverse:(
It's 1987 and Lindsey leaves. The new members make you hope for something great but alas....not at all IMO.
...and I'm not all Lindsey fanboy where I can't be objective and understand Mac was about change, it was envisioned that way by Peter Green.
but he had big shoes to fill and no one could. The Dance was proof, he brought them back from the dead.
When Chris came back and it was fab 5 again, the bands fans rejoiced, the shows sold out, 200 million was made.
This late in the game, with the fan vote so obvious over these last 20 years, this was about as insulting a swipe as I've ever seen.

I am very #teamlindsey and think regardless of whatever argument/ultimatum occurred they are losing the best thing that happened to this band. I am devastated by the betrayal from the rest of the band and wish we had the honest truth on why this has happened in the first place. At age 70 surely you should all know how to suck it up and play nicely for one more tour.
Regarding Neil Finn, whilst I would never dream of having LB replaced ironically Neil Finn is probably my next favourite artist after the band FM. What I will say about him is he is a real entertainer, very comical both on stage ( and if you follow him on Twitter) and quite the showman. Whilst he will need to tone this down of course I believe he will stand back and let SN do her thing and complement her where appropriate. He is an incredible two part harmony singer usually with his brother Tim. And interestingly he is used to constant drama as the two brothers are frequently falling out and at times Tim has simply walked away Mid-tour when they have come to blows as family members can do. At the very least I think he will hold his own and lighten things up.
But again #istandwithlindsey

Playing devil's advocate here (sorry if this was brought up already)
If Christine never returned to the band in 2014 and we were standing here today with Lindsey saying, "I want to do a solo tour before we go out, or I want a new album etc" - would you be inclined to think that Mick would have stopped any tour until Lindsey had a chance to do his thing?
I'm starting to wonder what kind of a say Christine is having in all of this as well. In Mick's eyes he's got Christine, Stevie and John...get replacements for Lindsey like he did in the past and boom you have a touring band.
I dunno - just seems fishy from all angles.
I wonder if Christine really enjoyed the time she spent with Lindsey on the road with the Buckingham/McVie venture...for her to agree to Lindsey getting das boot - or if this was flat out Mick's doing.

We know so little about the business aspects. Maybe the tour promoters, who had agreed to pay certain guarantees with the understanding they were getting the Rumours 5, wanted to renegotiate downwards considerably without Stevie - maybe that was said in the visit to the tour promoters we heard about. Mick could keep Lindsey if he wanted, of course - it's his band. However, he would have to renegotiate with them if he did so... that is, if they were even still interested at all. Maybe the majority wanted to back out of the deal entirely if Stevie wasn't a part of the band. Christine wouldn't like losing all that money either.
If what that guy on the Campbell Facebook fan page said is true, Stevie really had them over a barrel.

Statement from Mike Campbell on joining Fleetwood Mac:
"Though I was sad to hear Lindsey Buckingham is no longer with Fleetwood Mac, I am honored and excited to join the band. Lindsey is one of my favorite musical artists. A true genius at songwriting and guitar playing. I intend to honor his songs while at the same time bring my musicality to the band. After one rehearsal I can tell it’s going to be an amazing collaboration. I am also very happy to have an opportunity to play with Neil Finn, who I greatly admire. Fleetwood Mac not only has one of the greatest rhythm sections in rock history, it also has two of the finest voices and songwriters in Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie. I am looking forward to the tour with great anticipation."
It's interesting that he started by expressing his sadness at LB not being in the band.

To be fair, it seems reasonable to believe that she liked it simply because you were sending a message of support for her father. Now if she had REPLIED to you with a "yep, I was in the room and heard it all, Stevie said 'you're fired you big jerk!'" then maybe that would "confirm" it. There have been a lot of folks passing judgement based on very scant information. I will be interested to hear some hard facts about what happened in that room that hopefully will come out eventually.

She liked every comment bashing Stevie. Even her RL bashed her and she told her friend: "I love you". There's dissapointment in the Buckingham family and it's because of Stevie and Mick.
What, you think Lindsey is gonna tell his family a different story of what really happened? Why would he lie? And of course Leelee can't tell it.

Exactly. By that same reasoning, if she hadn't 'liked' the comment, then would that would have meant she disagreed with his show of support? Of course not.
She's his daughter- good for her for showing her support for him. I wouldn't expect anything less. In fact, even if Lindsey is somehow, 100% at fault and deserved to be fired, I would expect his daughter to show her support for him. You really think she would say "I love my dad, but FM was right to fire him because he was acting like a jerk?"

We don't know what happened and it's unfair to blame Stevie. It looked like his daughter was liking every post that expressed support for Lindsey. She has posted sweet things about Stevie in the past, but I would expect her to mirror whatever sentiment her father feels towards any bandmember at the moment. Is anyone posting nasty comments about Christine disguised as support for Lindsey and getting likes? No, because the target of everyone's vitriol is Stevie.
I don't understand why people think Stevie has some incentive to get rid of Lindsey. Even if you hate her and think she's greedy, how is she supposed to do Silver Springs without Lindsey standing there? She'll have to change her whole Gypsy story, forego the Sara interaction, the Landslide interaction, etc.
Her entire Fleetwood Mac narrative revolves around her relationship with Lindsey so even if you believe it's just that - a narrative - why would you think she'd want him gone? She would even make more money if he was there! The "classic" Fleetwood Mac lineup will sell more, and higher priced, tickets than the current lineup.
The entire band will have to work harder to sell this. They won't be able to glide through the same old motions, which is the "cash cow" mentality. To think that anyone in the band wanted this is ludicrous.

I cant see Neil and Mike combined getting close to what Lindsey would have received as a share.

I've been thinking about this. So many of the songs are about each other, sung to each other. The songs are awesome but what makes them killer is the people they are about are right there on the stage together--this takes it up a notch. How do they play these songs now or introduce them--esp when everyone knows the back story of every song!

I appreciate both of you for being rare voices of reason right now. Good grief, things have devolved so rapidly into such drama around here. I keep coming back to these threads to see if anyone came across any real facts and have to keep wading through page after page of name-calling, crying and hair-pulling.
How can people ask why the band couldn't be adults and work things out when clearly their own fans are at each other's throats over a bunch of rumor and speculation? We have very little REAL information to go on so far. Also, as someone pointed out, no one died! All parties concerned are free to continue to play and record at will. Can we please remember that this band has been through so many incarnations already and if fans of the various versions threw up their hands and refused to give the succeeding line-ups a chance they would have missed out on a lot of good music along the way. Whatever happens in Fleetwood Mac land, the sun will still rise tomorrow.

Under your logic, he should have never got fired in the first place, because Stevie would have stood up for him against Mick. And Christine. Not so sure about John.
Point is Mick would have been outnumbered. But that didn't happen. And he was fired.

Yup. That's what I was thinking. I know I tired of their scripted interactions long before she did. I mean, *I* was thinking "It's OK kids, I know you can't stand each other; stop pretending," but the planned interactions with Lindsey have been her whole shtick since The Dance. I mean, it's entirely possible she got to the point where she decided she's nearly 70 years old and she doesn't want to spend another minute of the time she has left in a room with Lindsey...but without any actual reported facts, I can't get behind "Stevie said 'It's him or me'" as being absolutely what happened. I mean, she's going to have to revamp half of what she does during a show!

Yeah, if she did issue that ultimatum I can see this playing into it. Her peers are dropping like flies. Prince, Glenn, and now Tom who she was especially close with. I’m sure the clock ticking is on her mind a lot these days and I can see her deciding she didn’t want to spend her twilight years with somebody that makes her miserable.

Your point is valid but none of us know how they treat one another behind the scenes. I know plenty of people who have cut off their own parents or children. If somebody is toxic, knowing them your whole life doesn’t change that.
(And i’m not blaming LB or saying he’s the toxic one. I don’t think either of them are fully to blame. They just are toxic together and it seems to have gone too far to fix now.)
I also think it’s kind of selfish of us to insist they continue working together if they hate it. They’re not dancing monkeys, they’re real people with real lives and feelings. We’re just a bunch of people who like their music. We don’t know them and they don’t owe us anything. Music shouldn’t come before mental health. These things happen. It happened with Sonny & Cher, Ike & Tina, George & Tammy, etc. If S&L can’t be around one another, that’s their business and I respect it and am still excited for whatever music will come from them both separately. (I do however understand why people are mad that they’re continuing the band w/o LB rather than breaking it up.)
