Is Mick trying to get on Stevie's good side?

People are always so quick to compare the success of Stevie's solo career to FM...Does that same standard apply to LB??? Because if it does then Stevie is far ahead of LB. How many of LB's records come close to selling as many as a FM record??? "Bella Donna" and "Wild Heart" had sales rivaling "tusk "mirage" and "tango". Have any of LB's records done that?
Comparing solo careers is a straw man.

If you want to be technical about it, it's real easy to say Stevie had "solo" success, but how "solo" was her actual initial success outside of Fleetwood Mac? The first two singles off "Bella Donna" were duets with Tom Petty and Don Henley. Stevie was riding the coattails of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the Eagles. Throw in her duet with Kenny Loggins a few years earlier, and it becomes clear that Stevie's hit duets with top mainstream artists early on help her establish an identity outside of Fleetwood Mac.

Lindsey didn't do that, nor did he make albums specifically for the mainstream crowds, whereas Stevie has always been very calculating about the mainstream appeal of her music.

Fleetwood Mac didn't rely on her popularity" so much as they expected her to be the full member of the band that she was supposed to be.

Jesus, some Stevie fans have some big egos and opinions. Without this band, Stevie and Lindsey both would 99% likely be playing bars or city festivals for 200 people max right about now with nobody likely giving two ****s about their artistic potential. This band gave them everything and made them who they are. Fleetwood Mac saved Stevie's career twice. Stevie's musical career was almost dead in the water after BuckinghamNicks and again after Street Angel, considering that album only spent 3 weeks within the top 100 album chart. If it wasn't for the reunion, Stevie would be a relic by now as would Lindsey despite her 'solo success' early on.

This is all SO true.Stevie says in her Gypsy speeches that all of your dreams can come true if you just believe.I feel like saying,"Honey, you have got to be f ** king kidding me.The only thing that you had that most people don't have is unbelievably incredible luck and you just happened to have hooked up with an awesome guitar player, which is what FM wanted anyway.I've been dreaming for about 50 years now and not a f**king thing has changed for me".Don't get me wrong - I am a huge Stevie fan and I'm so thrilled that she made it.But I believe she needs to come down to earth when she describes how she made it and give credit where credit is due.I would love, just one time,to hear her say "Thank you Lindsey for not leaving me in the dust when the Mac asked you to join. And thank you FM,especially you Chris, because you gave the deciding 'green light', for accepting me when you didn't need me".Of course their career took off when the 2 hippies joined but who knows? That could have happened without them too.But y'all know this is "not gonna happen":)

I think Fleetwood Mac would've had some success without Stevie or Lindsey. They were on an upward trajectory. Maybe not at the level they achieved, but there would have been some success. Actually, in hindsight, Waddy Watchell would have been the more obvious choice. His style was more similar to the guys before 1975, and he had a quirky look about him, not dissimilar to Bob Welch.

Stevie does thank them.. In her Gypsy speeches she usually thanks Chris specifically for letting in another girl singer. And I know for a fact she has thanked Lindsey for letting taking her with him. You can find it on Youtube, it's the introduction to Without You somewhere in England. But in all honesty, we have to remember here, Lindsey is an amazingly talented and incredible guitarist - but so was Bob Welch, Peter Green, etc. and FM was never massively popular, even in England. It was Stevie that got FM their first and only, to date#1. No, she is not the musical driving force behind the band, or even that song, but I guarantee you FM would not be where they are without Stevie's image. Yes talent should come before style, but in reality, image is crucial to a band's success, and Stevie had "the look." Did she play an instrument? No. Did men and women alike come in droves to admire her beauty and voice? Yes, and they bought the music as well. So yes, Stevie should give credit to FM for making her life easier, but FM would not be where it is today without her.

EDIT:: I found the video. The thank you's start at about 6:45.. She did this just about every night.

Fleetwood Mac was selling hundred of thousand of records, by the time Welch left. Plus, they were stars in England. B/N were on their last dime and using the recording studio for free when it was not in use. They did have a blowing up in Birmingham.

And she would be nowhere without them. It's a symbiotic process in my mind. And yes, FMac was very popular in England.

As DauphineMarie said, basically every single night of the 2013 tour, she profusely thanked Mick, John, Lindsey and sometimes even Christine.

Really? From 22 November 1968 to 26 September 1969, Fleetwood Mac had four top ten singles in England (including the #1 single, "Albatross," which hit #2 when rereleased in 1973). They were only #3 in sales, behind the Beatles the Stones. But I guess that wasn't really massive.

If you don't like Stevie, you have a right to your opinion but before Stevie and Lindsey joined, Fleetwood Mac had very limited success--which Mick Fleetwood himself said in his book. With Stevie and Lindsey, the band rose to success because the five of them together created wonderful music.

Just because you don't like someone, you don't need to belittle their achievements. And, really, how many people can sustain career success for 40+ years. Do all of you think that you're going to be functioning at your peak levels when you're 66 or 70?

I suppose you're right, my apologies.. Even though I'm English, I never really considered them that big in retrospect. The correct usage should have been they were never that popular in the United States.

I think Fleetwood Mac would've had some success without Stevie or Lindsey. They were on an upward trajectory.

Upward trajectory? More like just maintaining air speed. After Peter Green left, they were riding on the brand name, continuing to exist despite having an identity crisis, with constant changes in band dynamic. It's amazing they retained enough of an audience to keep them going; though they weren't busting up the charts, their albums still sold a feasible amount and they continued to tour.

When Bob Welch left, and they were reduced to just Mick, John and Christine, I would say they were at their most vulnerable. Mick's sense of perseverance and the shear luck of finding Lindsey and Stevie saved them; a union of chemistry that ignited a firestorm.

If you don't like or respect pre-1975 Fleetwood Mac, you have a right to your opinion but before Stevie and Lindsey joined, Fleetwood Mac had already released over ten albums, including a Greatest Hits album, had had four top ten singles (one rereleased five years after its first run and hitting #2), had been all over the music press in 1974 (any press is good press), had a record deal, had a significant following, and had been on American national television twice.

--which Mick Fleetwood himself said in his book. With Stevie and Lindsey, the band rose to success because the five of them together created wonderful music.
They also made wonderful music with Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, and Bob Welch. Maybe it didn't rise to the same level of success, but it was still wonderful.

Just because you don't like someone, you don't need to belittle their achievements.
You mean like you did with the pre-1975 Fleetwood Mac?

Upward trajectory? More like just maintaining air speed.
Depends on how you look at it. By the end of 1974, they pretty much established with the record company and the music industry that they (Mick, John, and Christine) were the legitimate owners of the Fleetwood Mac brand, they had moved their base of operations to Los Angeles, they still had a record deal, and they were managing their own affairs, yet they were off the radar enough to where they could still try anything and probably get away with it.

The fact that the first top 20 hit was a Christine McVie-penned song that could have easily been on any of the five albums prior just adds to the notion that they were on their way up anyway. The performances of Stevie and Lindsey on that song weren't especially distinguishable, or really even noticeable (unlike "Say You Love Me").

Mick's sense of perseverance and the shear luck of finding Lindsey and Stevie saved them; a union of chemistry that ignited a firestorm.
I agree that their chemistry took them to the next level. But to suggest that Fleetwood Mac couldn't have continued to be a viable band without Stevie and Lindsey is pretty disingenuous.

There should never be another FM album unless all 5 of these legends are part of it.

That kind of defies the character of band Fleetwood Mac as displayed throughout their tumultuous history. Despite the upheavals, they have always moved forward. This fatalistic expression of sentiment is similar to that of the fans that couldn't (and still don't) accept the band as Fleetwood Mac without Peter Green.

So many definitive statements are being expressed regarding this situation! Speculation is reasonable, but the "should nots" and "will nots" are so bluntly absolute.

Where can I purchase the crystal ball that some people appear to have?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. There is nothing disingenuous with my statement; perhaps the nuance was overlooked. I never inferred that they that they didn't have the potential to be a viable band.

Surely not, as is the case with Stevie. You seem to forget that starting in the mid 80s she basically became a has-been, a laughing stock really. I still cringe when I remember the comments people were making about Stevie when FM played at the Clinton inaugural. She remained a laughing stock until The Dance, and then her star rose again. I'm glad it did, but unfortunately it seems to have risen just high enough to make her insufferable.

There's 2 reasons I wish Stevie would end her commitment with Fleetwood Mac.

1. To end this incessant bashing she receives here.

2. So she can resume what's left of her career as a solo artist.

However, I highly doubt this will happen. If she did leave after this, a lot of fans and casual fans would view her as a selfish b*tch, like WTH is her problem? Who does she think she is? How dare she leave?!
Although I don't know her personally, I think that is likely the main reason she stays.
I believe she is happy Christine is back, but clearly there are still tensions between band members and not in a good/creative way. From what I'm observing from her, it's more of a 'I'm sick of this sh*t' way.

I have seen her enough times to tell a distinct difference in her energy/attitude when she performs with FM versus her solo performances. Good or bad, she seems to be a person that's highly affected by her emotions. So if there's negativity floating around between her and other member(s), it unfortunately affects her performance. She still sings well and does her thing, but it's mostly just like a job she's doing.

I myself have mixed feelings about feeling sorry for her. I mean, boo-hoo, I'm a big rock star making tons of money and now I'm stuck in this huge band. But on the other side of it I do feel sorry for her just because it sucks when you're not happy - no matter what the reason.

It's unfortunate, because I am pretty positive she'd be much happier if she were resuming her solo career.

I'm still trying to understand how people can think that the massive success of Rumours was a GOOD THING. It killed the band, for all intents. Yeah, they still kept making music & writing songs, but what are they locked into playing in concert for the next 40 years?? There's no expectation of anything ELSE from them by their general audience (except us painfully & pained few). Even in their solo shows (mainly speaking of Lindsey & Stevie), they are EXPECTED to play their Rumours songs...and because they "do as they're told", they acquiesce. Had they had the balls to tell their audience "THIS is what we're doing NOW" and actually PLAYED the material that they constantly were telling the press "it's the best stuff we've ever done", then maybe they might've been given some credit for being creative bastions of rock. But, they're not. They're a nostalgia act...and not even for their music...for the Rumours soap opera. Their whole post-1978 careers have been based on Shippers' fantasies.

yep. I remember reading an interview where Stevie mentioned being practically booed off the stage when they first introduced songs from their upcoming Rumours album to a live audience. It seems that ever since then this band has been spooked from that experience or experiences like that. You're right, they don't have the balls to do otherwise. And that's a shame.

I think this was actually, partially, the band's fault, as they chose to push Reprise harder in '75, got Over My Head remixed for radio, etc. Why they didn't do this before, we'll never know, but just to think how easy it could've been for them to do this before. I guess they deserve a semi-pass in the sense that they were dealing with the fake Mac thing and maybe they didn't have it in them to put effort in to this at that time (though it could be argued "why bother" if they busted their humps to get their name back then not do this) but anyway, I really do wonder how well (or let's say "differently") the '75 album would've done compared to the previous few had they not made the effort they did with OMH? I know they like to blow over this in some of the docs (i.e. "by the time Rhiannon was a hit") but since OMH is what nudged the public to take interest in a follow up single to a top 20 hit single... Can we honestly say it still would've been as big a seller as it was compared to the last few?

I'm not so sure that would really be a valid option for her anymore. Her most recent solo outings show her status as a concert draw has greatly waned. She has only been able to half fill amphitheaters in recent years. Her latest solo albums have had top 10 debuts, but have sharply fallen off the charts after their debut week and failed to even make Gold status. She hasn't gotten radio or TV airplay for new songs since the Say You Will era.

Point being, Stevie can't really continue being a solo artist in the fashion she's used to. Could her ego handle having to perform in smaller venues & theaters? Would she be willing to ditch the private tour jet? She's getting to the point where her lavish touring and recording expenses can no longer be justified by her handlers.

Sure, she's financially stable enough to walk away from FM and live out the rest of her days in sublime comfort. But her solo career does not offer her the trappings FM does: sold out arena tours, massive media attention, and unfettered rock star perks. More than any FM member, this sort of stuff matters to Stevie.

Good point. She does seem to love the lavish life and attention she gets that touring with FM provides. But I think we would both agree that it's a double-edged sword for her. Like you said, if she were to go back to her solo career, that would mean smaller venues and lack of personal aircraft, among other things. She would obviously have to weigh the pros and cons of this, but I would guess that if given the choice, she'd probably still opt for the solo career. Nothing to see here, it's just the old "not doing it" 'til the cows come home then will agree to get people to think it's more of a big deal she's doing it than it is in the hopes of drawing more people into the "unthinkable". She'll be there.

Same here with when I saw her at South By Southwest promoting the In Your Dreams and Sound City projects. She seemed genuinely happy and utterly relaxed- two emotions she never seems to exhibit concurrently within the confines of Fleetwood Mac. I think such intimate venues and projects do make Stevie happy as a reprieve from the politics and emotional stress FM carries. However, would she be totally fine with permanently walking away from all of the glamor that goes along with Fleetwood Mac? I think she'd initially breathe a sigh of relief, but get restless after a few years. Like she says, she's a Gemini- she's gotta have both sides of every coin to be content.

So wrapping all of this around to the initial question at hand- will Stevie record this final Mac album? Of course! She wouldn't miss it for the world. Will it be an immediate thing? I wouldn't count on it. Stevie will most likely insist on a break from the band when this tour finally wraps. I wouldn't want to speculate on a date an album would emerge, but I wouldn't expect it before later in 2016. She will want some time off after 3 consecutive years touring with FM. Then she'll likely want to do some sort of promotion for 24k Gold- maybe some small theater shows in hand picked cities? Next she'll want to take some time to get the prose & poetry into song form that she most certainly wrote during the past few years with FM. Then she'll want to put those songs into demo form so she can have something to bring into FM.

So my point with all of this being- maybe she really is putting the brakes on committing herself to the FM album for legit reasons- she realizes it will probably be the last FM studio album, and wants to bring fresh, relevant material to the table. And to accomplish that, she doesn't want to commit to what she feels are arbitrary time tables.

Jamie

I agree. She will be happier working on her solo career.

I know everyone has a right to comment what she should do but its getting old, stale and sour and freaking tiring when these threads keep popping up about this topic.

I LOL when I see these posts about the band should fire her.
She probably would be pissed like anybody that gets fired from a job but she can march on with her solo works .

If Chris have not return. This current tour more likely wont be happening.

I can understand what the pressure is.Its like going back to the warehouse job I had and dealing with the idiots I've dealt with for the past 10 plus years.

Looking back, my post came off really aggressive. So I'll mention this; I love Stevie and Lindsey both. I'm 27, my mother introduced me to the Mac when The Dance aired on MTV. I immediately went out and bought every album of the Mac, Lindsey, Christine and Stevie I could find. I took a day off from school just to be first in line when Trouble In Shangri-La came out, my first ever concert was when they played Raleigh in 2004 for the SYW tour and I was so awestruck I saw Stevie again in Charlotte in 2005. This high school bullsh*t behavior has got to stop. I just wish they'd all make one more album, a final tour and just call it a damn day so they can end things gracefully and not go out embarrassingly kicking and screaming like a bunch of cranky, unpleasant elderly folk.

I started listening to country music when country music wasn't cool in the 1970's when country music was country music.LOL Thanks to Barbara Mandrell for using her song title.

As the recent years went by I got tired and fed up of these so called country artists popping up making country music sound like rock and roll so I end up going back and enjoying classic rock and classic country music along with the other great oldies hits from the past.

When they fire the hard rock elect guitar players and rehire the banjo, dobro,Fiddle,Washboard,ETC ,Steel guitar players better lyrics maybe I'll come back.

The industry had to do something to lure in the younger demos in to listen.

Make the move .It will be worth it.

90s country, the trapping of many our age. Lol. Fleetwood Mac helped me transition from country also. And I'm your age. That's really funny to me. I wanted to be Faith Hill when I was a kid. Then somewhere around 11, 12 I wanted to be Stevie, or some sort of Sarah McLachlan/ Stevie Nicks hybrid. (Though ugh, Sarah's last two albums really lost me.... That's the artist I am angry at. I've loved IYD and 24KG so...). I remember saving up whatever money I got as a teen, pre teen, to go to the cd shop. I had an insane collection but cds scratch or get lost so easily I don't even know what happened to them all, I rebuy cheap used cds at record shops now.

As for the topic at hand... I don't think it even matters what I think. Not like we really have any control over this band or what the members do or don't. I'm still bummed I never went to a SYW show, I'm so attached to that album (along with The Dance and TISL, probably because of my age, I've seen research that notes the strong effect music we liked in our teens has on us the rest of our lives, I think it's true.) I only went to my first Mac show in 2013. And yeah, as a diehard, I'm getting sick of the same old songs (but three cheers for Sisters of the Moon!) and the drama. I was mad for awhile since I'm pretty sure I'm not mistaken, didn't they originally insist album first, then tour? Then suddenly went and announced this tour months and months in advance.... I want the album. And as I've sid in a couple of other posts around here, while I'm young, I have extremely poor health, frankly I'm just as worried if not more so that I will die before the dang album gets released. I know some rightfully worry something could happen to any of the band members and Johns cancer sure brought that home, but shoot, I don't have rock star money to seek treatment nor am I anywhere near healthy enough to go on a world tour so I just want this darn album before I pass. But frankly I also desperately want a solo Stevie show, and heck the smaller the venue the better... I'm not young enough for Make a Wish or similar but my life goal is to meet Stevie. And eh, the drama of the band bothers me less in many ways than the drama of the fans. Lol. But hey there's really no one like Fleetwood Mac and there's sure no other group of fans like Mac fans, and I think that's largely a good thing. Who else has three lead singers in their main lineup? Who else has various and in ways vastly different "generations” (for lack of a better word, eras maybe?) of the same band... Makes for interesting dynamics in the hardcore fan world. Me personally, I'm a completionist. I have to have everything but Stevie is my favorite. I relate to Stevie in ways both good and bad, maybe I even like the fact that I share not so good qualities with Stevie. Artsy types arent always nice people anyway. Lindsey isn't without flaws for that matter... ;) always least like Christine because she just i don't know, seems more reserved, her music is more lovey dovey happy. Not the guts and feelings and emotions Lindsey and Stevie bring to the table. But I think I like that she's back, I love the way their voices blend. I love seeing Chris and Stevie together. Certainly takes us at least partially away from all the shipper drama.

But dear G-d, I would really like to hear some new songs, please! And let's face it, they won't put out an album without Stevie, like her or not, she's a draw for the casual fan for sure, probably the biggest draw. You don't have to personally feel that way and heck, I'd still buy the album but might not enjoy it as much. And that's just it, it seems clear the band is smart and mine seems to be a big bottom line. If they put out another album, all five of them, they can easily expect it to be a reasonable hit, much like this tour. But if Stevie isn't on it, they won't make near much, it won't be a hit and you know, you must know, if Stevie isn't on the album, every write up and review is going to focus on that. The album will be known as "well, it could've been better if the whole band was on it" and the "where is Stevie?" Album. If, and I highly highly doubt it, Stevie all out refused, frankly I don't think we'd see a new album at all. If we were lucky maybe an anniversary collection comes out that includes the songs Lindsey and Christine are supposedly working on because sure, that would sell. But a full Stevie-less album, yeah sorry won't happen. As music fans we all get our favorites, we may not always like every member of the band, or the new direction a band or singer takes (like what I said above about Sarah McLachlan, she used to share the top spot on my list of favorites with FM, she sure fell for me and I've never seen a favorite artist let me down so bad..l) but while we may wish for this or that in the end we don't have any control and even our absolute favorite band can do things that really piss us off. I wouldn't be totally surprised if the album never happened or takes way, way longer since they've already repeatedly changed when they claim said album will be made. And if Christine hadn't returned, I'm not sure we'd ever see any new Mac at all... The one thing that would absolutely surprise me honestly would be them releasing the album without Stevie, just don't see that happening...

From an interview with Stevie 2007 in Songwriter magazine http://fleetwoodmac-uk.com/wp/vision-quest-stevie-nicks-performing-songwriter/

After that you returned to Fleetwood Mac yet again. How do you look back on the making of Say You Will [2003]?

On Feb. 2, 2002, I went straight from the Trouble in Shangri-La tour into recording with them. It was nightmare doing that record. It really was Lindsey’s vision, and it wasn’t very much about the other three of us. And of course it was also the first record we had ever attempted to do without Christine [McVie, who left the band in the late 1990s]. Right there, the whole thing was completely insane. She is the magic mediator in that band and always was. She’s the one who made light of everything and made everybody laugh and told us all that were full of ****. She was the person who made it all work. So when she wasn’t there, that sunk the boat. I don’t think that my friend Chris ever realized how important she was. Without her, it’s a boy’s club. The lack of Christine is a big, hollow hole in my heart.

Would you be willing to attempt another record without her?

Absolutely not. Not in this lifetime. Why? We already tried, and it did not work. My thing is, somebody convince Christine to come back and do this one more time. I don’t think she’s going to change her mind, but stranger things have happened.

Which just circles us back to the question, so wtf is holding her back now??:distress:

IMO, she's a lot older now, and a lot more diva-like. Her agenda is most important to her now, and if that f*cks up FM's, she doesn't care. I think SHE thinks that she's the star of FM(and maybe she is), and she wants to make them kiss her ass now.

Wow. I don't recall this. Stevie articulately shed light into the tension surrounding the Say You Will saga. Maybe Stevie needs to remember her quote "Come back and do this one more time." Christine is back. Now Stevie needs to take her ego and take it down, climb a mountain and turn around and come back one more time, because there may truly be no second time around for us. She can never look back.

I have loved reading through this whole thread. There are people on here who obviously prefer the pre-Rumours line up of FM. That is all well and good. However, that line up is gone. Why do we have to listen to this continuous drivel about what would have been if Stevie and Lindsey wouldn't have joined or if Stevie would just leave. Go post in your own section of The Ledge. It probably isn't going to happen whether you like it or not. If it did happen, I am sure the 4 or 5 of you would be totally thrilled seeing them in a 2000 seat theatre which is also all well and good.

If Stevie did just turn back to her solo career, she could still outsell Fleetwood Mac. It isn't even a contest...my whole point is to give credit where credit is due. Her mystical songwriting paired with her very beautiful and unique voice gave wings to Fleetwood Mac. I am not disparaging any other band member by saying this. Add in her sense of style and her stage presence and it was the winning combination that is needed for a successful, revenue-generating band.

My whole problem with this thread is that one of the 4 or 5 people are always dogging Stevie. If you don't like her, you probably don't really like Fleetwood Mac in this line up. Go post in the section that applies to your tastes!!

That's hardly a fact. Fleetwood Mac would be less successful without Stevie, certainly, but I hardly think that they would be less successful than she is as a solo act.

Yeah, In Your Dreams has sold about 200,000 copies in the US and I don't know what 24k Gold Has sold but its first week sales were about 60% of In Your Dreams. Could Fleetwood Mac sans Stevie sell 200,000? I think so. Especially if they had a catchy Christine song that was well promoted and got them some exposure in a commercial, TV show or awards show performace.

Straw man. Nobody has ever suggested that the earlier versions would/could/should ever get back together.

Why do we have to listen to this continuous drivel about what would have been if Stevie and Lindsey wouldn't have joined or if Stevie would just leave.
It's a counterpoint to the "Fleetwood Mac was going nowhere until Stevie and Lindsey joined." Fleetwood Mac had a track record, and if you consider where they were at that point in time, on Dec. 31, 1974, the environment was prime for them to take the band to the next level.

Go post in your own section of The Ledge.
Last time I checked, Mick, John, and Christine were also in the "Rumours" band. When Chiffon-heads start rambling on about some idiotic nonsense like "Fleetwood Mac was going nowhere prior to Stevie gracing them with her presence," we can offer a much different, more informed perspective.

If Stevie did just turn back to her solo career, she could still outsell Fleetwood Mac.
With Lindsey and Christine still in the band? Not hardly. None of them will set the world on fire, given the changing nature of the industry, but the Fleetwood Mac brand is much bigger than Stevie.

my whole point is to give credit where credit is due.
Like how you ignore the fact Christine had nine of Fleetwood Mac's 17 top 40 singles.

Her mystical songwriting paired with her very beautiful and unique voice gave wings to Fleetwood Mac. I am not disparaging any other band member by saying this. Add in her sense of style and her stage presence and it was the winning combination that is needed for a successful, revenue-generating band.
It was a gimmick that worked. But there were/are fans who don't like that.

My whole problem with this thread is that one of the 4 or 5 people are always dogging Stevie. If you don't like her, you probably don't really like Fleetwood Mac in this line up.
I'm a fan of the Fleetwood-McVie-McVie rhythm section, be that with Peter Green, Danny Kirwan, Bob Welch, Lindsey Buckingham, or Billy Burnette, or whoever. I'm also a fan of Lindsey's finger-style guitar playing, as I love folk guitarists, such as Richard Thompson, Roger McGuinn, Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stooky, etc. It's VERY easy for me to say I'm a fan of this version of Fleetwood Mac without liking Stevie.

I think this was actually, partially, the band's fault, as they chose to push Reprise harder in '75, got Over My Head remixed for radio, etc. Why they didn't do this before, we'll never know,
They lived in England, they had a snaky manager who was their main contact with the label, and he didn't really have any creative ways to market the band after Peter Green left.

The difference by Dec. 31, 1974, is the band was living in Los Angeles, was internally managed, had a direct relationship with the label, and had established that Mick and John were the legitimate owners of the Fleetwood Mac name with the "Heroes Are Hard To Find" album and tour (even thought you could hear the strain the whole "Fake Mac" had taken on the band, especially Bob). They had some experience piloting their own ship by the time Lindsey and Stevie joined.

Right, this is why I said they kind of get a pass due to the fake band etc. and that's a good point about them still being in England back then as well. I guess I just wanted to point out in case some were under the impression that every FM album/single before '75 got equal exposure to the '75 album but people chose to ignore those albums/singles then just decided to buy the '75 album simply because BN were now there because that wasn't the case. They need to realize that got more of a push and in the specific areas that some of the previous albums/singles should've been promoted.

It's still worth discussion. While I'm annoyed by Stevie's initial reluctance to do a new album, allegedly. I would love to see another album with these three singers. yes. i'm not sure what exactly he said in Chicago, but at other m&gs he also mentioned a possibility of releasing it as one of the band members' solo album (i think he said as LB solo album?) or as FM with just 4 members if SN doesn't get on board. or waiting for her for years.

their new album and when/how will it be released seems to be a recurring question for Mick at every m&g.

That's because a lot of Fleetwood Mac fans want a new album. And even if we like Stevie, some of us will direct the anger where the evidence takes us.

If Lindsey kept insinuating he wasn't on board for a new album whilst Christine and Stevie had recorded 8 tracks together and were waiting for him to show up... Well, I would bet all the money in my pockets that the chiffon heads would be madder than a ghost in the fog, on a staircase, with dark make up, in the winter, without any boots.
And that's the truth!
Beyond that, Stevie reiterated in 1987 that "we could wait around another five or ten years for Lindsey to come around" and in 2003 "we couldn't have her be on the album and not tour because what if one of her songs became a hit..." It wouldn't be so bad if she hadn't towed the company line so hard in the past. But she did. Now it's her turn to shine or get out of the way.

I would be fine with that...Bye Bye LB...Bring in Peter Frampton to take over...A lot of his '70's hits would fit right in with the FM setlist...Peter can play and sing and they've toured together before...

OR, just bring back Billy and Rick.

Richard Thompson would be the best choice. He writes great pop songs about breaking up and other dark themes. He's a revered folk-rock guitarist who wasn't particularly influenced by the blues. He's known for choosing artistry over profits and isn't afraid to experiment with music. He made an album and toured with his wife while going through a pretty bitter divorce (only, that was a van tour). I can't imagine a more empathetic figure that could still push the band's creative envelope.

it's your prerogative to be convinced of whatever you wish.

it's a problem when you are telling everyone else to stfu based on your flawed "information".

the last time anybody heard from a band member about the state of the album, who is on board and who is not, and possibility of releasing it without Stevie was most probably 2 days ago at Mick's m&g in Chicago.

So, I guess you're the expert on this topic, huh? The stfu was based on the negativity regarding Stevie and whether she'll appear on this studio album or not. It was all in fun, people can be so touchy as "Rizzo" once said.

Back on topic, the fans who visit here are obsessed with the band, including myself. Let's talk about the general public and the casual Fleetwood Mac fan for a minute. Nobody would be interested in a new FM album that does not include ALL the members. The band should not even do a new studio album unless it consists of these 5 people. As for new Christine or Lindsey tracks, they should hold those for solo albums (if the FM reunion album fails to happen).

I'm a fan of the band and a fan of Stevie's and I'd be fine with a Mac album without her on it. I'd prefer one with her, but if she refuses to participate, for whatever reason (and at this stage in the game most reasons are bs), then I think the band should go on without her.

There's already enough 'coulda, shoulda, woulda' in the history of this band. No need to create more.

And if people can't engage in polite exchange on here, maybe they should go to another fan site.

Except the fact Stevie is still a member of the band. If she chooses to be a member of the band, she has to record. It's her job. She's in or she's out. She owes the band a clear answer about her intentions. If she opts out, so be it.

yes. i'm not sure what exactly he said in Chicago, but at other m&gs he also mentioned a possibility of releasing it as one of the band members' solo album (i think he said as LB solo album?) or as FM with just 4 members if SN doesn't get on board. or waiting for her for years.

their new album and when/how will it be released seems to be a recurring question for Mick at every m&g.

Wow! thanks for the info. I had no idea it had progressed this far. Personally, I would love a FM album with all 5 BUT I would prefer just the four and have Stevie do her solo thing if she isn't 100% excited about and committed to the project. If she isn't as thrilled as the rest of the band appears to be about the prospect of recording another album with Christine then she definitely shouldn't. I think it would be heartbreaking to have 2/3 of the songs be amazing and 1/3 be indifferent.

Stevie planned a color tour for 2015 before Christine returned and postponed her tour so FM could do this current tour. She put the band first, even though it's caused her dearly (re: 24K sales). When the FM tour ends, they will take some time off to rest and let Stevie tour (possibly a limited tour like Bella Donna and IYD first year) before finishing the album. Have a little faith in her and the others; they aren't on our time, they're on theirs.

Not just that but the 'Songs from the Vault' sub-title alone raises red flags with people. In the store I manage, some of my usual customers will come in to check new releases on Tuesday and I had about 10 people look at me and say something along the lines of "So she's regressed to releasing material that wasn't good enough the first go around?"

I like the album, I like the updated sound from the demos, but that sub-title raises a huge red flag for certain people. It's almost like a B-Sides/Rarities album and those never sell well at all.

Her best bet, honestly speaking from someone who loves her career on the whole and from an artistic point of view, is to just f*cking get out there, do the damn Mac album and if you want to keep releasing solo stuff, release EP's, like one a year, maybe two; four/five songs each of just old re-recorded demos and maybe 1 or 2 new things if she's feeling up to it and do small venue shows where she can do the new stuff without feeling the pressure of dragging out those hits. The Mac can be her money maker whilst she gets the pleasure of recording with Dave and going back down memory lane through her vault of songs. It's that friggin' simple, done and done.

But I realize she and they don't work that way and it'd never happen in a million years.

Here's a different perspective. Artists, especially prolific artists, produce more than they release. Things are held back, or are left undeveloped for numerous reasons. Not everything an artist works on is released. Stevie has amassed a body of work in various states of construction that she has revisited occasionally, and some of those songs have trickled out on previous albums.

It should never be an issue or make a difference if a song was written yesterday or thirty years ago. Time is not relative to the quality or integrity of the song. Saying "So she's regressed to releasing material that wasn't good enough the first go around?" is a simplistic assumption based on nothing but hypercritical senselessness. These are low rent Stevie fans, reaching for any reason to disparage her. It's not a fair critical assessment.

Many of those demo have been circulating and floating around for so many years, long before the internet. They were traded on cassette tapes by fans who, by snail mail, made transactions with collectors from classified ads in the back pages of music magazines. With the internet, those songs/demos became easily accessible to a much larger audience beyond die-hard fans. If these songs weren't so familiar, perhaps this album wouldn't be subject to such criticism and derision.

I'm not sure how the word Vault has any negative connotation. Isn't a vault typically used to safely store and preserve items of precious value;
rare keepsakes such as artwork, jewelry, 24 Karat gold, etc...?

Side note: Elvis Costello (albeit-a musical genesis beyond reason in his prolificity and scholarly sophistication) has hundreds of songs that don't appear on albums. Most of them have been released as (dozens of) b-sides, in compilations, and as bonus CDs in re-released records. Fans don't dismiss the material as inferior, or question why it didn't make it on an album. I'm not comparing her to Elvis, but considering the longevity of her career, she hasn't been as prolific as fans might like. I'm grateful she gave us 24 Karat Gold. Let's hope we get more from her, whether its "new" Vault albums, or newly written songs.

Except the people I brought up aren't high rent or low rent Stevie fans, they are the equivalent of the 'casual audience.' A few of the guys I mentioned come in every single Tuesday without fail, talk music in general and buy several albums just to hear, in their words, "whats new." They aren't Stevie fans, they're fans of music in general. They are the ones who, outside of us, really push her sales and matter because we'll always be there to purchase whatever she or the Mac coughs up, they are the ones that need to be drawn in. In fact, I even remember several of them buying In Your Dreams the day it released. So their views and opinions matter even though it's drastically different from ours.

If these songs weren't so familiar, perhaps this album wouldn't be subject to such criticism and derision.

Vault in the album business usually means a collection when used, and collections can sell well like Greatest Hits do except in this case when its blatantly marketed as rehashed/unreleased/demo-ey stuff and especially in this case when some of it sounds pretty dated. I had one person try and buy it the day it came out under the assumption it was another greatest hits package. When told it was a new album and they looked at the tracklist on the back in shock, they put it back on the shelf. The fact of the matter is, the marketing decisions just simply sucked. If it had been marketed as a brand new album instead of a collection from the Vault along with the sub-title, maybe then people would've been a little more interested.

Not to get on too much of a rant here, but another example is the expanded Mac stuff. You have no idea how many times in my 9 years of working at this store I've had people ask for Rumours and when I show them the two disc, they scoff at me and demand the version "without the extra crap" so they end up buying a used copy for 5.99 instead. Casuals just aren't interested and the marketing was aimed at us, not the people who really matter when it comes to sales.

Stevie said she has 10 or so demos ready and might just go back to Nashville and record them when the tour is over...As far as LB goes I don't think he will be given the opportunity to have a large influence in the final outcome of whatever songs FM does get from Stevie...I predict Dave will be there and Stevie will allow LB to add his parts (like on SA ) and nothing more...

She would not have sold significantly more copies than she actually did. Maybe a few, but not tens of thousands let alone hundreds of thousands more. Her sales numbers are where they would be/will be at this point in her career in the industry as it stands now. Sad fact of life these days. She might have generated a lot more publicity, but sales? Doubtful. :sorry:

Yes, this is the key thing. I would lose a lot of respect for Stevie if she did not take part in a new studio album and yet continued to tour with the band. We all remember how Christine seemed to want to continue working with the band on new material during the Say You Will era and was not allowed to do so as she did not want to tour.

Having said that, I do agree that without Stevie on board we are unlikely to see any major Fleetwood Mac releases. If it turns out that it is just the 4 musicians who end up making new music, I imagine we will see a release similar to that of Extended Play (online only and independent). Whether the band (mostly Mick and Lindsey) wants to recognize it or not, Stevie is the individual who keeps them being able to tour arenas and potentially release a major studio album. This of course does not take away from the talents of the others, however we need to be realistic.

I find it hard to believe that with the momentum that the band has had lately that Stevie will not join in on a new album. Just give them time...

I see no reason to have faith in Stevie considering she's the sole reason there has been no album since 2003. She has a history of not wanting to record with the band and only minimally contributed to the EP in 2013.

What's a color tour? And that's a long time in advance to plan a tour. Why wouldn't she have planned it for 2014? They knew before the end of the 2013 tour that Christine was returning. Also, she's the one who decided to quickly record a solo album knowing she wouldn't be able to promote it much. That's on her.

And, whether Stevie wants to recognize it or not, Fleetwood Mac is the band that keeps her being able to tour arenas. The fact is she can't do shows of that magnitude as a solo artist. Her not being in the band would be just as bad a career move for her as it would be for them.

Actually, maybe even worse. With all of the press/TV appearances she's done over the past five or so years, she's dangerously close to being overexposed. At least Christine's return to Fleetwood Mac adds some intrigue that solo Stevie no longer has.

and potentially release a major studio album.
"Major" being the operative word. At this point, though, there aren't too many older artists releasing major albums. They'd be better off going on a smaller, though notable label, i.e. Matador.

So I was reading this, Stevie Nicks says solo career always came second to Fleetwood Mac (http://www.kshe95.com/news/real-rock-news/stevie-nicks-says-solo-career-always-came-second-fleetwood-mac), which was an interview she did with a radio station posted today.

Anyway, she mostly just talks about how in a way she enjoys going back and forth between FM and her solo career.

As of this point, I'm taking this as her subversively saying to us "I'm still going to do the FM album so just chill out and relax".

I don't know. Maybe she hasn't said anything recently because she wants it to be a surprise/have the biggest impact when she finally does announce she's written/recorded/is on board with the new FM record. *shrug*

jbrownsjr
02-19-2015, 02:31 PM
She went on to explain how she pitched it to her bandmates -- Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, and John and Christine McVie -- saying, "So while you guys take your extended vacations: Lindsey, while you lock yourself in the studio and make records that nobody's ever going to hear; John, you're going to go and get on your boat and sail, actually sail, from L.A. to Hawaii and back, and get lost out there, and we're going to lose you and not know where you are; Christine is going to go back to London and hang out with her friends. While you guys are doing that, I'll make a record, I'll put it out. I'll do a month of shows. And I'll be done, and I'll come back. It's never going to be in front. It's never going to be Fleetwood Mac. I'm the Learjet and they're the 738."

Wow, just wow. Nothing like paying respects to your colleagues' solo careers.

Lindsey had a few big hits in his solo career.
Christine had a big hit and did two solo records.
Mick had quite a few projects.

*shrug*

sounds like her version of Lindsey's "big machine/ little machine" speech

John even had a solo project.

Yes, this is a pretty dooshy way of expressing things, but I think it gives an honest insight into what's in her head....:(

Hm. Not sure exactly what you're saying. Didn't she start recording Bella Donna in the fall of 1980? I feel like at that point Lindsey hadn't begun his solo career yet (Law and Order came out fall '81 if I remember correctly). Mick only started recording The Visitor after she started recording Bella Donna, John only had one solo album in the 90s, and Christine hadn't released solo since '70 and wouldn't again until '84.

If you read the whole article, she was specifically speaking to what they were doing at that moment when she decided to tell them she was going solo. She wasn't sh*tting on their entire solo careers.

I'm glad she went solo because I love Bella Donna. But to say Buck's songs would never be heard is wrong because his album was released in October of 1981 and he got fantastic reviews. Mick was in Ghana doing the Visitor with Richard in January 1981.

It just always and forever sounds like, "meeeeeee, meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!" oh and my bandmates...

And it looked like Lindsey's album might gain more attention at first, because Trouble was getting some decent airplay. In fact, he and Stevie were on the charts at the same time and the press was saying they couldn't escape each other.

"I love Lindsey. I love him very, very much and I wanted Lindsey to make it and I wanted this album to be as successful as… If this album is more successful than my album, I would be so glad. You know, when "Trouble" (the single from Buckingham’s LP) came out, I was saying, let it go straight to the top. Because it only makes my life easier when Lindsey is happy. ‘Cause when Lindsey is happy, he’s really in a good humor and he’s wonderful and he and I really get along and we’re close. Seriously. In particular to Lindsey. I was hoping this was from the Onion or something, But to actually say that? Sheesh. Whether that's what she actually said then or is paraphrasing (and it's worse if that's what she's doing, because it shows what she thinks about him now), it's cruel. He had a top 10 hit, another top 40, and his most recent album charted as high as Go Insane. This is in addition to always being critically acclaimed.

Nothing any of these five musicians did alone compares in musical quality to the music they have made together. Yes, Stevie has had some commercially and artistically satisfying albums; yes, Lindsey's solo records have always been on the right side of critics; yes, Christine's three albums across 45 years show her to be a gifted and viable talent who could function independently of her bandmates--but in all cases, these musicians thrive best as a team.

Can they do it again? Judging from the quality of their recent live shows, I am certain they still have a lot of life and energy in them. The question is, will they set aside their precious egos and get it over with? It appears 4/5 of them have.

Nothing Stevie could attempt to do musically outside the band after the tour would merit breaking up the band momentum. Maybe she will see this sooner than later.

I read the article with the quote. A couple things.

It's obvious its about Bella Donna. She actually says that. She frames it in that time frame of explaining to them why she was *starting* a solo career.

Second, the "Lindsey recording songs no one will ever hear" is clearly not about his solo albums, its about his studio noodling that he never releases. So all the high dungeon about how "rude" she was being there is much ado about nothing.

As usual.

I guess there isn't any controversy in being the same megalomaniac back then as you are today. The fact that she constantly has to talk about the sacrifices that she makes for the band. I've been hearing her say the same thing for 30 plus years.

I've never heard her say that about Lindsey's work, however. I've more had the impression of what Nicole posted about her love for his work, or the melody pill comments and such.

But enough about me, let me talk about how everyone else feels about me.

But enough about me, let me talk about how everyone else feels about me.

Yeah, she's fairly consistent on some things about his work. In 2011 she said:

"Because by that time [when Buckingham Nicks was dropped] I was to the point where… You know, I’m very loyal and I certainly was Lindsey’s biggest fan and I thought he was the greatest guitar player in the world and had the most beautiful voice. He’s one of those people that I walked into the room once and he sat there and played a song and it was room’s on fire. He’s one of those. He’s one of those men.

And whatever I had to do to keep him going was okay because it was more important to me that Lindsey make it than it was that I made it. Because I knew that I could do a hundred other things and no one could ever take my music away from me. I could still write songs and play and I could take my music in whatever I did. I would be fine; I knew that.

I worried about him. I didn’t know what he would do and because I was so in love with him there wasn’t any - there was no question. There was never a question in my mind that I would stick in there until, if we didn’t both make it, at least I got him up there. And when you love somebody and you see the pain in their face when they even consider the fact that you might not make it, it’s like “don’t even consider the fact that we’re not going to make it; we are”. And in my heart I’m saying to myself “If I have to, y’know, if I have to comb this town, I will find somebody to listen to us, that we understand how good we are, that will at least know how good he is.”

It does come across a touch dismissive, the 2013 interview quote we're discussing, but she bristles if people think she didn't love him as he loved her (see Stuttgart Without You intro) or doesn't appreciate his musical genius (see below).

March, 2004

Not long before I interviewed Stevie, Lindsey seemed close to tears when he told me that she had never thanked him for all the work he’d done on the album. “Did he say that to you?” Stevie replies incredulously. “My God. All I can is that he worked his butt off. I give him all the credit. He took my little skeleton songs and turned them into fully finished pieces. The way we work hasn’t changed. He is an immense talent, a craftsman beyond belief. I knew that the first time we met.”

A sentiment well articulated! Perhaps she needs to be reminded that when Buckingham Nicks was dropped from their record label, there was no guarantee they would be able establish a career together. Lindsey had more prospects than Stevie. He could have left her behind when he got the offer to join Fleetwod Mac. Stevie needs to drop her emotional baggage, deflate her ego a bit, and show some gratitude for Lindsey and the fact that she has a solo career because of Fleetwood Mac.

They are facing an expiration date, so this album is very significant, as it will be their last, capping off a 48 lifespan of Fleetwood Mac. They don't need to go on another two year tour. Do few high profile shows showcasing the new songs, along with a few classics, film it for posterity, stream it on the internet and release as live CD/DVD

After that, Stevie will have all the time in the world, free to follow her muse. Instead of attempting to revive 24 Karat Gold (which is pretty much dead in the water) by touring, she should just go back to Nashville and record 24 Karat Gold Volume 2, and tour behind both albums, featuring mostly these new/old songs with just one third of the same road weary song that have glutted her setlist for thirty something years. Drop most of the Fleetwood Mac songs and move on.

Not just from you Bob, because I don't want you to accuse me of picking on you, but I am real tired of hearing this same sentiment from so many Fleetwood Mac fans. Everyone says how Stevie should be thankful to FM for jump starting her career. How many times is one person supposed to be thankful and feel the need to payback for something that happened 40 years ago? That's almost like saying I started my restaurant career off as a busboy and then became a waiter. Eventually I managed the restaurant and now I am Mr. Puck and I own and operate a series of NY eateries. But you all want me to humble myself and go back to being a busboy for a year just to show my gratitude to the restaurant that gave me my big break in my youth? Should a movie star be compelled to return to the tv show that made them famous? Should an NBA athlete be compelled to play for his high school basketball team?
No one here can debate my Fleetwood Mac fandom. I am a fan of all 3 singers. Always have been and always will be.Yes I would love to see Stevie contribute songs to another FM album but if she decides that is not what she wants to do, I am not going to berate and insult her and try to guilt her into doing so.
To quote a line from SOTM: Well the people they love her but still they're the most cruel.
I also understand the argument that because she is in a band she must do what the majority of the band wants to do.I just don't understand the negativity some of you state in trying to convince us and her that, that is what she (Stevie) should be doing.

I don't want her to be unhappy. If she really doesn't want to record then she shouldn't. But she shouldn't agree to tour with them, making millions of dollars and getting to play the worlds biggest arenas, all the while complaining about how she's had to sacrifice all this stuff, how no one in the band cares about her music, and how she'd rather be focusing on her solo record, etc. If she REALLY doesn't want to be in the band any more, then leave. It seems a bit unfair to stick around for the cash tours and then be like "PEACE B*TCH" when the band wants to really get to work again and are asking something that they naturally would expect her to want as well. If it's THAT hard then she shouldn't have agreed to anything in the first place.

If she wants to screw up this last big push of momentum and relevancy for the band, then that's fine. It IS her life and her career. But she's going to have to realize that that's how it will be remembered by a lot of fans and most likely the media.

When their On With The Show world tour is over, a well deserved break will be on cards for all 5 members.. after that I honestly think Stevie will do one last album with F/M. I have this niggling feeling when Stevie was putting together her songs for 24 Karat album, Christine arrived in Nashville at one point. Why would that be  investigating how Dave Stewart operates as a producer.. or maybe Stevie and Christine picked out a few suitable demos that the Mac could use from Stevie's vault.. Who knows!!

Stevie will get this new album out of the way, then move on with her solo work.. :)

if by 'new album' you mean new FM album, then I have to respectfully disagree with you.

I think she will put off the Mac and do something solo and then maybe return to do another FM album… at which point, IMHO, the momentum of Chris's return will have been lost.

I think she's wrestling with the winding down of time… maybe regretting time not spent doing more solo stuff, who knows.. but I think she's underestimating the time window for closing out the FM chapter. I think she still thinks she can jump back and forth between the solo career and FM one more time, and I'm not sure that's so true. I think at this point in time there are too many variables outside of their control (foremost among them being mortality, followed by health).

I was just thinking about this. She does talk a lot about jumping back and forth between these 2 careers, but it's coming to the point where she IS going to have to choose. It's going to be unavoidable, if it isn't already. Which, I would agree gives her the right to be undecided. That's a lot of pressure. But when a lot of your fans are frustrated as well as your own band, maybe it's time to look at the bigger picture and revisit priorities.

Sometime around when "IYD" came out or maybe it was after her mother passed Stevie was talking about reaching the point when she was going to have to decide which projects were important enough to spent the limited time that she has left on...

In terms of Stevie "getting her priorities straight" she's made FM her #1 priority for three years in a row...What more do they want? she only has so much time left and if she wants to do more solo after this tour FM needs to deal with it. Maybe they could do something as one of Mick's "Zoo" incarnations.

Perhaps Christine should have "got her priorities straight" a few years sooner instead of waiting until the last minute to pull her head out of the sand...Christine probably wrestled with returning for a while. She may have thought about returning once or twice and It's possible time became a factor in her decision at some point.

All this blaming Stevie for everything that's wrong with FM is ridiculous...If you remember LB said the work we have right now will be PUT ON THE SHELF UNTIL AFTER THE TOUR so FM NEVER had any intentions of putting out new product in 2014 or 2015.

Your analogy would be correct if someone was asking Stevie to go back to Fritz, for old time's sake, to show her gratitude to Javiar. Touring with FM is not taking a step back for her. She benefits greatly, not just with money, but with publicity. The FM association enhances her solo status and the attention it garners.

But I agree with part of what you said. I am not interested in guilting her into returning. I don't thinks she should be there if she doesn't want to be. And instead of making herself seem like a martyr for staying, (oh I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings), she should just go. Staying and reminding them that she's there under suffrage as a favor to them is a selfish, self-aggrandizing move.

She should just tell them she has no interest in recording another FM album or that she won't record one before 2017 or 2018 or whatever her time frame is. Rather than leaving things up in the air, just TELL them. Tell interviewers. Tell fans.

This is the way FM operates...How hard would have it have been to put it in Stevie's contract for the tour that in order for her to participate in the tour she had to participate in the recording of the next FM record?

All this blaming Stevie for everything that's wrong with FM is ridiculous...

We're not talking about "everything that's wrong" with FM.

We're talking about her blatantly avoiding the topic of a new Fleetwood Mac record and her refusal to commit one way or the other at a point when the rest of the band is on the same page.

How do you know that FM does not know exactly what Stevie's position regarding recording with FM/LB is??? And yes in fact Stevie is being blamed for FM's lack of output when in fact FM is the one responsible for holding themselves back and not Stevie...If Stevie has in fact told them "no new music" and she did in fact tell them this after the 2009 tour then FM has no one to blame but themselves for not parting ways with Stevie and moving on...

All this blaming Stevie for everything that's wrong with FM is ridiculous...If you remember LB said the work we have right now will be PUT ON THE SHELF UNTIL AFTER THE TOUR so FM NEVER had any intentions of putting out new product in 2014 or 2015.

They actually did....the target was early 2015? someone help me out here with the interview comments from LB and, I think, Mick as well. I think late 2014 was at least hinted at. I know at one point early 2015 was named as the target.

Then the target for finishing/releasing got pushed from late 2014 to the following year (2015), and finally to some vague, undefined time in the future. And now it's not really talked about at all.

It got pushed further and further out because of Stevie's refusal to commit. And I think after the last guilt-trip done via the media (ref. Mick's interview in, was it Playboy I believe?) she's not going to be influenced by those tactics again.

Fleetwood Mac is gearing up to record, release new album in 2015: "Fleetwood Mac’s “On With The Show” tour wraps up in mid July, but that doesn’t mean the band’s reunion train will stop rolling. Lindsey Buckingham says the group will resume work on a new album as soon as they come off the road. “Before we started rehearsing the show with Christine [McVie] … she came over and said, ‘Lindsey, I’ve got some rough ideas for new songs,’” Buckingham recently told talk show host Tavis Smiley. “She gave me a bunch of stuff to take home after we saw her in England when we played there. And I worked on it at home, took lots of liberties, came back. She loved it. We went in the studio for two months and came up with probably the best group of songs that were co-written that we’ve done in years. So we are going to continue working on a new album and [my] solo stuff will probably take a back seat for another year or so.” Buckingham added that a new Fleetwood Mac album “would be a beautiful way to kind of wrap up this last act.”"

And at that point they weren't signed up for all the tour dates they have on schedule now. It could have been a lot shorter. If they were all on board to record an album, then they probably wouldn't have added new tour dates. The extended tour isn't keeping the album from happening. The extended tour is what they're doing because they can't do an album.

Of course, they can do one. Since they've made money off of the tour, why they don't pocket it and record an album without Stevie which won't make money but might fulfill them creatively, I will never know. And no it doesn't have to be their swan song. They can record without her now and record with her in 3 years, if she is willing. But the four of them just sit there.

All Mick has to do is have a contract drawn up and hand it to Stevie...Either you sign the contract agreeing to record with FM or "You are out of the band"
it's that simple...

It's not that simple. They are, after all, not just band mates, but friends for 40 years now who seem to get along fairly well at this point. That probably means something to them, especially Mick, and giving her an ultimatum would jeopardize that. They probably really want Stevie on the album and kicking her out would be compromising the whole point of making the album which is to make an album with the whole Rumours lineup rather than just putting out a new album regardless of who is on board. I'd love to hear an album even if Stevie is not on it, but it's definitely not simple.

It's not about Stevie vs. everyone else. It's about timing. This is 2015 and they're all in their late 60s or early 70s. It's not the same as it was in the past. I'm sure in the past the band was all that mattered and either be on board or get out. It's probably not the case anymore and the idea of getting an album with all 5 is probably a bigger deal now because of everyone's advanced age. I don't know if this is the case, but it seems plausible.

I think she still thinks she can jump back and forth between the solo career and FM one more time, and I'm not sure that's so true. I think at this point in time there are too many variables outside of their control
And, even with the variables within their control, Stevie might not be able to jump back and forth so easily this time. I think she overplayed her power within the band from 2009 until Christine's return. Now they could put out a band album without her.

In terms of Stevie "getting her priorities straight" she's made FM her #1 priority for three years in a row...
For which she got paid handsomely.

Maybe they could do something as one of Mick's "Zoo" incarnations.
Why do that when it's Fleetwood Mac?

Perhaps Christine should have "got her priorities straight" a few years sooner instead of waiting until the last minute to pull her head out of the sand...
That's a straw man. Stevie chooses to be a member of Fleetwood Mac. It's her job. Christine didn't want to be in Fleetwood Mac and she retired. She didn't drag the band through a will-she-or-won't-she. She told them what her plans were, and she stuck with it, at least until she read Ken's book. So, she came back. Which Stevie should be thrilled with, considering she offered Christine $5 million to come back.

What a bunch of crap. Fleetwood Mac is a band that has always had at least two lead vocalists. Doing an album without a second lead vocalist at that point would be a Lindsey Buckingham solo album. Lindsey ended up doing a solo album instead, and many of those songs would have been on a Fleetwood Mac album had Stevie not blown the band off.

I still don't get how you constantly underestimate the band. You basically said you couldn't possibly see how there would be any demand for another Fleetwood Mac tour so shortly after their 2013 tour because Christine wasn't the household name Stevie is, yet they're selling out arenas while being one of the highest priced concert tickets, much higher than the 2013 tour. Stevie is the household name, but she's not bigger than the band. They'll do about as well as a quartet as Stevie will as a solo artist. Neither will make a lot of money on any project. Very, very few artists are making a lot of money in music these days, especially older ones.

I never said that there wouldn't be a demand for the band because Christine wasn't the household name that Stevie was. I said that the tour would not be a successful one because I felt that they saturated the market -- not completely. I thought the 2013 tour was a short one and that they could come through and do a lot of smaller venues in 2014, but I didn't think they could sell out arenas again the way they are doing now. But thinking that had nothing to do with Stevie. It had to do with what happened during the second leg of the SYW tour, when no one wanted to see them again, having just seen them in 2003.

I never said Stevie was bigger than the band. In fact, just this week I posted that Stevie alone couldn't outsell FM without her. I think that's true of both tours and albums. FM can be as profitable as Stevie is solo. It just can't be as profitable without her as it can be with her. But even that is only true when it comes to touring. My belief is that albums don't sell any more these days anyway, so there's no reason that FM should think of sales at all when it comes to making this album.

I don't think any album they sell will make money, but that's not because Stevie won't be with them. I don't think the album will make money anyway. That's why they should stop holding out for Stevie on the album. They have nothing to lose with her gone. They won't sell more records with her than they will without her.

They also won't lose publicity because her opting out of this album will generate publicity of its own kind, really. So, they'll still get as much press as a foursome.

And if they feel they don't want to take their last recording bow without Stevie, it doesn't have to be their last bow. They can take their last bow 3 years from now and do an album without her today.

I agree that now is not the time to have that conversation, but only because they have commitments until July. You're right that it's not Stevie vs. everyone else. It's about Stevie choosing to be in the band or choosing not to be in the band. Maybe Stevie is weighing her options right now, but make no mistake the band is weighing their options, too.

This is 2015 and they're all in their late 60s or early 70s.
All the more reason to have that conversation. There might not be another five years to wait around for Stevie.

Christine came out of retirement for a reason, and it wasn't to do another Greatest Hits tour. She specifically wanted to make music with Fleetwood Mac, and the very first thing she did when they agreed to let her back in the band was go into the studio to work with Lindsey, Mick, and John. Yes, the top priority is to get an album with all five, but again, there may not be five years to wait for Stevie.

As much as I love Stevie, a FM reunion studio album will sell much more than anything she puts out solo. Even the 2003 FM album (SYW) without Christine sold more than her solo albums from 1994 (SA) going forward. With Christine on board this next album could be a monster.

They wouldn't have just seen them in 2013. They saw a very similar band, but not same one. It suggested that the crowds wouldn't be sophisticated enough to know the difference or care if Christine was in the band or if she wasn't. Clearly, that wasn't the case.

I never said Stevie was bigger than the band. In fact, just this week I posted that Stevie alone couldn't outsell FM without her. I think that's true of both tours and albums. You also said that they could go back to being an opening act or play state fairs as part of a package tour without Stevie, because that's what happened in 1994-95 (when there were NO "Rumours" era vocalists touring with the band).

My belief is that albums don't sell any more these days anyway, so there's no reason that FM should think of sales at all when it comes to making this album.

No, it doesn't sound like I'm saying that. That's how you're interpreting it, but you're doing so without foundation. I must have posted 100 posts since January 2014 about Stevie not being on the next FM album and I've never suggested the album would sell less because Stevie is not involved. I don't know what the crowds are sophisticated enough to understand. I spent thousands going to London just to see Christine make a cameo with FM so clearly I think she makes a difference.

The exact conversation (because I prefer that to media paraphrase, which is helpful but somewhat limited...) went like this:

I’d take Lindsey Buckingham in the big machine or the small machine. I think it works either way. Which leaves me to offer this as the last question. So since Fleetwood Mac’s on the big tour now - everybody knows that so get your tickets if you can get in; they’re out there now - Um, what happens after the big tour? You gonna go back to more solo stuff?

Uh, eventually. But, you know, one of the really exciting things that happened before we started rehearsing the show with Christine is she came over, because she said ‘Lindsey, I’ve got some rough ideas for new songs’, and we, she came over and we went in the studio - the two of us with John and Mick - and again, you ask ‘Well, is that still going to work?’ and that was my thought. Oh my god, you know, is this, am I still going to be able to do what I used to do for her or is what she’s going to bring me - She gave me a bunch of stuff to take home after we saw her in England when we played there, and I worked on it at home, took lots of liberties, came back, she loved it. We went in the studio for two months and came up with probably the best group of songs which were co-written that I think we’ve done in years, so we are going to continue working on a new album. And, uh, the solo stuff will probably take a backseat for another year or so.

You know what, nobody’s complaining about that.

No. Least of all me.

People would love to hear another Fleetwood Mac album.

Oh, I’m telling ya, beautiful way to kind of wrap up this last act, you know.

Well, I suspect, uh, when that happens, you and maybe somebody else will come back and see us.

I certainly hope so.

Exactly. These guys are masters at drama. It's been that way since the beginning and it has worked in their favor so far.So if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I think their drama is genuine for the most part. You're insinuating that it was all manufactured. I don't believe that. They have or have had real tension and friction between them.

No, it doesn't sound like I'm saying that. That's how you're interpreting it, but you're doing so without foundation. I must have posted 100 posts since January 2014 about Stevie not being on the next FM album and I've never suggested the album would sell less because Stevie is not involved. I've always said the album is not going to sell anyway, so why do they care if Stevie is involved or not, if she doesn't want to be on it?

Michele

This massive world wide tour with Christine back in the band has put them back on radar. Negative expectations aside, though the album might not jump to the top, I think it will do respectively well. I believe they do care to keep the most successful line up of the band intact. This isn't just another album -- it's their last album. Even if Lindsey and Christine produce a great album, it will be known for all the wrong reasons without Stevie on it.

and this i believe may be a possible reason why they keep still giving Stevie a chance to come back into the fold.

but i also think they are considering other options if she doesn't, since they are not getting any younger, can't wait forever, and want to put out all that new music they produced in 2014.

Stevie Nicks gets Fleetwood Mac album off the ground:
Rolling Stone 3/15/2016

I sat Christine, Lindsey, and Mick down (well because John walks away when I speak) and I explained to them in detail what I wanted to give to them. Because they are in my band and they are my first priority. Being in Fleetwood Mac is like being in the army. Well, if the army had private jets and private hotels with grand pianos and a trail of assistants following you around, and if there wasn't any bombs or guns or killing. Yes, just like the army.

And I told them they are my first love and I told them how they are my first love cuz you know they already know that. And I told Lindsey I joined this band and we dated for ya know like 5% of the time that we've known each other, so we have to get along. And we need to do this, because Lindsey and I are so special. This may be our final project in Fleetwood Mac so it has to be good. I told all of them that.

When I looked up, for some reason Christine was hanging by a rope from the ceiling, Lindsey had jammed two sharp objects into his ears, and Mick was laying on the floor next to an empty bottle of pills. So I grabbed my little assistants and we pranced into my army like hotel and I played Rhiannon again. Because you know, it's the only song I really know how to play.. hahahahahah...

You could hear it from the first note. It's shocking.

I agree. I saw them in 2009 and was impressed by the muscularity of their sound, by the trio of bass-drums-guitar, but the elusive magic was not there. And Stevie seemed drained. Distant.

But in Pittsburgh, during the first few bars of The Chain, I already sensed a difference, a crackle. They were sparking off each other. The moment all three of the singers leaned into their mics, I got the old chills back. Christine's contributions are sooooooo important, but because she is subtle and restrained, most casual observers don't see them. Her higher harmonies on the song have always spoke of anguish. That anguish is an essential ingredient to the mix. Then, when the band tore into You Make Loving Fun, I was floored...

Several months later, in Buffalo, they played the same set, though this time, the magic was even stronger, more palpable. They were easy with one another and I sensed all of that old chemistry unearthed. Christine brought it back.

In truth, they all possess an ingredient of it. When one is absent, the result pales.

and don't think Stevie doesn't know this.

they're never going to come to a mutual understanding-- i.e., Stevie thinks she gave up solo opportunities over the years for the band; Lindsey surely has to feel he gave up solo possibilities for the band…. you get older you start to think about missed opportunities and dwindling time… Except Lindsey seems to have reconciled himself to the band trumping solo work and Stevie hasn't. I really think that whole thing of Lindsey saying "don't bother me for a couple of years" (or was it 3? maybe that's where Stevie got fixated on 3 years) while I do solo work has stuck in her head. It always seemed to me over the years that on various solo projects she had to cut them short to make some arbitrary timeline of the band's … for example, not being able to do a full tour for Bella Donna to get to the studio to work on Mirage, etc. While of course the band always felt like they were stuck waiting for her. There's never going to be any real meeting of the minds on this. Everything that's going on now is just a continuation of this same drama. Except Stevie is more willing in her later years to put her foot down and hold out for her solo time.

In many ways it seems to me like she wants to tie up loose (solo) ends and get out stuff she should have gotten out years ago more than doing new solo music but who knows. She really is better known from being in the band and I would love to see her just wrap up the band with this last album and then be free to spend the rest of her days doing only her own stuff. Does she not want to let go of the band and is dragging things out??

The Cleveland Review nailed it. The rest of the band was simply better, re-energized. Buck looked so happy!

I don't have negative expectations about an album. I think an album will be an amazing thing for fans and for the bans. I think it will give them a creative burst. I don't think it will go platinum, but at this point I wish that record sales would not equate to positive and low sales would not equal negative in the band's mind or the fans. Enough of that. I'd rather hear the music than read the Billboard charts.

And this album does not have to be the last album if all 5 of them are not poised to participate in it. It can just be an ALBUM. They can gear up for the "last" album later, when the pieces, all the pieces, are in place. Making this the last album with laurels on it is to also create a planning inertia where nothing gets done, because you're trying to make what does get done so momentous.

Better to strip expectations away and just get an album out now and then build to the "last" album over the next 3 years.

Michele

Like you, I've read 1000's of interviews from the Macsters.

It took us 10 years to realize we were correct about Buck being mad that Christine left. As it came full circle, we now understood his frustration.

I never would have guessed that he and Stevie would not have more of a collaboration in Christine's absence. That one threw me.

'

thanks nicole!!

Speaking of Stevie interviews, it occurs that maybe Chris's participation in the Rolling Stone piece and her specific comments were really her way of "working" Stevie to do the new album etc. Last time Mick and to a certain amount Lindsey did a harder form of cajoling or manipulating… Mick's Playboy interview all gloom and doom and this is it for the band that's it I can't see a way forward etc etc worked, but probably won't work again. Maybe Chris is taking the opposite path, being kinder, more diplomatic, you know, the old "you catch more flies with honey" kind of thing… "Stevie's so magical and I just love her to bits" etc is to achieve the same goal, get Stevie into the fold, but using the tactic of making Stevie WANT to join in, rather than guilting her into it. Just a thought that wandered across my brain, "like a strand in the wind".

I really do wonder if they think she's the loon, that many of us do?

I think that they all think both Lindsey and Stevie are loons, but in different ways. Since Lindsey is insane musically, sometimes it actually helps them to communicate with him. Other times, it is frustrating for them, when he is focusing on one thing too long and they are ready to move on.

With Stevie, I don't think they can communicate with her very well. She's always rambling about herself and something they're not interested in. They can't relate to her musically and count on Lindsey to do that. In the limo tape, Christine asks her to just be quiet for a bit and I bet they feel that way often -- even when no cocaine is involved. Like in the Destiny Rules video when Stevie joins the guys she is telling them all about her time away and how FM was with her all the time and Mick says that what she doesn't understand is that they spent all that time trying NOT to be FM.

But Mick just had a way of gently mocking her and discounting whatever she was going on about, to cut her off. Of course, he does the same mocking thing to Lindsey in the documentary too, when Lindsey leaves and he and Ray are alone.

And Lindsey and Stevie both think the other is crazy.

This is my perception, too. I think Christine understands Lindsey better than Mick because they co-write and she just reels him in when she needs to.

I've seen both Christine, Mick and Lindsey all roll their eyes at Stevie. I've never seen someone talk about themselves more than she does.

well the story told by Tom Petty in the recent RS article was rather revealing-- Christine came to him and asked him to ask Stevie to make some musical change to a song because they felt he knew her better than they did. (I'm starting to really like Tom as a credible commentator on the relationships in this band lol)

In any event, the thought occurs that both Lindsey and Chris have spent extended time away from being in the band... and certainly for Chris, being out of the 'biz' altogether for long stretches. Even Lindsey bugged out for a bit. So they each have a point of reference to life that isn't all work, all fame, all music. Stevie has never done this. Her career was a bit flat in the 90s and she was zonked out on klonopin but then she wasn't really in position to be 'living' life in quite the same way. So her whole world is built on career, career, career.

I also remember she said in an interview that Don Henley "taught" her how to be a rock star. She didn't elaborate in detail, but I've always thought this to be a bad thing. The Eagles are...well, the Eagles, with all the narcissism and jerk off rock star attitude and behavior that goes with. Not terribly long after her time with him/them she'd make comments like the infamous "we're rock stars, we're not nice" etc. It always felt like Stevie, who craves to be liked, to be popular and all that (result of her transient childhood, always having to make new friends? who knows. Lindsey seems to think so ) took this kind of 'mentoring' to heart and embraced it. I think she can be nice, thoughtful, and down to earth when she wants to be, or when it suits her purposes, but I also think she really means it/believes it when she says "I'm a ROCK STAR" and I think that's when the British 'taking the mickey' must be required in order to get things done within the band.

Stevie talks about the Eagles here in a 1981 interview with Mary Turner :

"Let’s put it this way, I wasn’t the 9 year resident rock and roll star. I was new, but I had a job, I worked. Fleetwood Mac was happening. I had been singing along to the Eagles for five, ten years and then to finally actually meet all of them. I was very aware of what kind of guys they were, what they liked and what they didn’t like, who they accepted and who they didn’t accept. And I thought they were all roguish. And when I was with them I didn’t say anything about Fleetwood Mac ever. I just didn’t talk about it because it was easier if I was going to be around them to not talk about what I did because they weren’t really interested.”

"It says in the Highwayman, ‘she considers slowing down,’ but then he would never win. She purposely lets him win because it’s easier to let him win. She gets a lot further if she just lets him win. And I learned that a long time ago if I was going to be accepted as anything, as a songwriter, as a person, as anything, that I would have to be very quiet, unaggressive around them, feminine and trick them to death. And it worked. See I love them and I respect them so much, and they are, as far as I’m concerned the greatest songwriters and all I ever wanted from them was a pat on the back saying ‘not bad Stevie.' I didn’t want roses, flowers and accolades. I just wanted a word, which when Don came and sang on this album was probably the greatest compliment anyone has ever gave me because he would have never sang on that album if he didn’t think it was good.

When I was searching I found this 1994 quote from Details Magazine and it is very much where the band is today. I guess Stevie thinks they had better shut up about 24K and her solo career or else she definitely won't participate in a new album. She's keeping them treading water.

Yeah, and if the book were to come out, a lot of people would cease to think of me as this eccentric, flaky girl. My journals tell the real story of what went on, like the way things changed after Bella Donna came out. No one in the band ever said a word to me about my solo career. They were keeping quiet for their own best interests. They knew if they ripped Bella Donna apart, I wouldn't give them any more songs. Remember, "Dreams', which is just me, is the only gold single that Fleetwood Mac ever had.

someone on FB was telling me how she never omits to mention at her solo shows how she wrote band's only #1 hit. no wonder so many of her fans keep repeating this "only FM's #1 hit" like parrots.

 "only gold single" somehow i suspect GYOW, Landslide or Don't Stop far outsold it by now.

I've seen both Christine, Mick and Lindsey all roll their eyes at Stevie. I've never seen someone talk about themselves more than she does.

I think Stevie's fans have the impression that the band discounts her because they don't appreciate her talent. I believe they do. If they kind of give her the "brush off, little sister" treatment, I think it's because they find her silly. It's not because they don't think she's a good singer, songwriter and entertainer. Even on the first album with Rhiannon, Landslide and John liking Crystal, I think they thought she was valuable. When Mick told her she was instrumental on Over My Head, I don't think he was flattering her, I think they all realized what she added to that song.

So, I don't buy that they ever underestimated her contributions to the band. They just maybe find her tedious.

She once said,

I am funny. I crack up my band constantly. I could have been a comedian if I'd really wanted to. In Fleetwood Mac, I was pretty much told to be quiet at all times. I was so intimidated because I felt like nobody wanted me to be in the band and that they only wanted Lindsey, and me along for the ride.

I mean, this makes it seem like they just wanted her to be quiet because they thought of her as a child, but maybe they wanted her to be quiet because she was probably giggling, dancing, squealing and telling them about the 3 hours she spent taking selfies the night before, getting the lighting just right and placing candles all around the bathroom until they just couldn't take it anymore.

So you have giddy Stevie and Lindsey spending hours trying to make his guitar sound like a violin and no wonder the other 3 became big time alcoholics.

My favorite Stevie being ignored moment, is in the Tusk doc outtakes. She's blathering on in the studio, trying to tell them what she wants a song to sound like, and NO ONE is listening to her. She finally spins her finger at the side of her head, motioning that they're all crazy.

But they're all working together, and all completely ignoring her. :woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

they don't have the balls to tell her what to do. NO ONE does!!

Oh, and she gets the Presidential Suite in every hotel, "because I demand it".

This has to be, hands down, the most delusional, insane and daft comments I've seen in a while. No one invvoled with theband is bigger than Fleetwood Mac. Out of 16 members that have come and gone, no singular person is Fleetwood Mac. To even say that just shows your inane bias. And this is coming from a Stevie fan.

NUMBER OF TOP 40 FLEETWOOD MAC SINGLES
Christine: 9
Stevie: 5
Lindsey: 3

The 2014-15 tour has been MUCH more successful than the 2013 tour. What changed? Stevie was on both, Lindsey, Mick, and John were also on both. Tickets could be found for under $50 for opening night to in 2013. Not so in 2014. Sadly, I didn't see the price of that pavilion tour where Stevie was opening for Rod Stewart to use for comparison.

But, yeah, it's all about Stevie.

The only member who, at one point in time, was bigger than the band itself was Peter Green, and that was before he lost it. Anybody who got ripped off by the Beatles did something right.

I agree. In that interview the 1st thing to come out of Chris's mouth was "I'm here for Stevie".

Yeah, because they already knew the path to major success was Fleetwood Mac. THE very last time anybody in Fleetwood Mac had a top 40 single was in 1990, a quarter of a century ago, and it was a Christine McVie song. The relevance of Stevie's solo career is long, long gone.

What are you talking about? Before Christine's return Stevie was absolutely necessary or else it would just be a Lindsey solo album. In fact, Mick and John appear on several tracks on his last few albums. Just the 3 of them. Never once in Fleetwood Mac's history has there only been one singer/songwriter. That's not how the band operates. None of your arguments are based in reality and truth is Stevie has power within the band.

Listen Human Torch, the reason this thread has gotten so much attention is because, like Fleetwood Mac, Fleetwood Mac fans are frustrated by Stevie's lack of commitments to the band. We'd rather have the glorious combination of the Fleetwood-McVie-McVie rhythm section coupled with Buckingham's amazing finger style guitar playing combined with those harmonies. That doesn't happen on a Stevie Nicks solo album.

Maybe not, but Lindsey and Christine can do adequate harmonies. They proved that on most of Tango in the Night. But I think also the point was that Stevie's songs are better with those elements as well.

Re-read the post!!!

Stevie does not have to do anything! Until Mick Fleetwood tells her she has to be in the studio on a certain date and if she fails to appear there will be stern consequences then she will continue to do as she pleases. And the fact that she continues to do as she pleases and is disrupting the attitude of the the other employees of the company is a direct result of her Boss being unwilling to take action.

And as for before the CM return...Peter was replaced. Bob was replaced. Lindsey was replaced. Stevie was replaced once before. Why would that time have been any different?. It's something that's part of the business.
Having one SS could have been a new chapter in the FM story.

What stern consequences? That she's out of the band? That was my point. You couldn't get rid of her at that point because all you had was Stevie and Lindsey.

And it IS different. You keep thinking that things are the same as back when they were young and in the prime of their careers and had to keep going. Since they reunited the Rumours lineup for The Dance that's all it was ever going to be. They weren't going to go back replacing members with new guys anymore. They aren't a current band who can establish a new lineup with hit songs and albums. They're an oldies band and the fans, hardcore and casual alike, aren't going to be receptive of new band members. At this point they don't have to keep going. They can just retire. There's no incentive for them to bring on new band members and try to make it again.

it might be interesting if they have Lindsey and Christine, and they replace Stevie - depending on who they replace her with, whether they look for creativity or fame in the replacement member etc.

but i feel strongly having the only iteration of the rumours 5 that we didn't have yet - Lindsey and Christine heading the band (since we had Lindsey and Stevie, and we had Stevie and Christine), without any replacements would be the most interesting, and very appropriate.

This reminds me of what Stevie said about Mick's new line up in 1994:

It's not the real Fleetwood Mac. They have a new female singer, Bekka Bramlett. She's a blues singer. Dave Mason, from Traffic, is in the band. He used to be in a band with Mick and John years ago. Billy Burnette, who joined in 1987, will play guitar. All they need is a piano player. If they're smart, they'll play the blues. I don't think Mick is stupid enough to recreate what we once had. Although, this never occurred to me until a couple of weeks ago. I looked up to a couple of people and said, "Do you think they are going do my songs?" If I was them, I would stay away from the standards.
