Ellen - "What songs are you looking forward to hearing from Stevie?"
Rod - "Leather and Lace...etc...etc..."
Stevie - (in her head) "Oh damn! Now I have to put it in the freakin' set list! I'll just pretend I didn't hear him mention it."

That's what I was thinking too. We should get married.:xoxo:

No shawl, no strings and things on her mic and was it just me or did she look momentarily lost during the portion she normally does the twirls. Although she recovers with the skirt shimmying.

for youtube...Had to work this morning so I missed all the episode, but just finished watching it. Seeing Stevie helps warm me up after being outside in the cold almost all day today.

I was waiting to see the twirls. Oh well. She did seem lost for a sec. It looked like she was getting ready to do a twirl when she suddenly said, "Oh wait! Just grab your skirt and shake it around! Oh crap! It's already time to go back to the mic?! I forget we shorten the song for these tv appearances!"

Same, but I'm in Brisbane. You would think that with all these bloody digital channels 9 has now they'd be able to have regular programming on one of them.

And I know, people less than 20 minutes from me are spending the first of many days sweeping mud out of their houses and throwing out ruined possessions - I just don't get to see Stevie much on tv :o

exactly
i was watching TODAY this morning when they had all the phone numbers up thinking WHO the hell is watching the TV to get this info
they're either not going to have power or their TVs are covered in sludge or they have more important things to do.
im pretty sure Ellen reruns were on Gem a while back or some channel
is it too much to ask for ONE hour of normal television
it's holidays for a lot of people
maybe some of them just want a BREAK in front of the TV non news aaaargh
i am so annoyed

Arena on Foxtel.

Not one mention of her new album.

i dont have foxtel
the internet is my cable :D

I was wondering if they edited anything out of the performance and/or interview. Last year when I was out in LA, I went to a taping of Jay Leno and when we watched it back that night, I was shocked that they edited out a few words here and a few words there. Things that didn't make or break a segment but we were like, hey..wait a minute, didn't they....so it just makes me wonder if there is anything that happened we didn't get to see. Do we know if any Ledgies got into the taping yesterday? I assume we would have heard by now if they did.

That was unbelievably brilliant,

Stevie, &, her "band" were right on target with their live rendition of "Stand Back",

it was absolutley amazing to see Stevie, Waddy, Jimmy, Lenny, Al, Carlos, Ricky, Sharon, &, Lori, blast us with an awesome version of Stand Back,

(too bad there was not a reprise),

disappointed not to see DavidMn, &, HejiraNYC in the audience,

anyway, the 28th January 2011, The Joint, 8177 West Pico, LA, just to touch base with the best R&R band around before they hit the road with Stevie

Agreed she soooo could've played SL.. the studio cut has been unleashed on youtube anyways! But I like this version of Stand Back better than the one she/FM have been doing for the last decade or so. I wish they would sample the synths/sequencer straight from the record live instead of that droning sound. Oh well, this new version sounds a bit truer to the LP cut.

"Secret Love" really sounds good. It isn't stilted & frenetic, like Prussians at play. There is a willowy vibrato in her voice. It isn't the most sonically adventurous track we've ever heard, but it doesn't make any of us cringe because of datedness or inaptness. It has a nice chug-a-lug quality that will grab radio programmers & listeners. It will be a hit!!!

Her rendition on ELLEN was not good at all. She sounded awful: toneless, flat, harsh. She reminded me of her Timespace tour performances.

I feel Stevie's voice has changed so that she is remarkable at the ballads like never before, but struggles with the rockers. Having said that, Stand Back has always, to my ears, been a miserable hot mess live, and the Ellen performance was another example of how ill-suited the song is to live performance and Stevie's 21st century vocal chops. Just my opinion, but she also seems to fight her way through a lot of her louder tunes live, sounding just hoarse, winded, and bellowing aimlessly.

Thank you for the reality check. I thought she sounded horrible on Ellen. I partially suspect that she was screaming into the mic because she couldn't hear herself properly. Also, I think she was trying too hard to put out flair- waving her hands around, dancing in place, etc. It's such a contrast with the Solid Gold performance that's still up on YouTube somewhere, in which she truly conveys the understated passion of the song- with her big, sad eyes and pout and her only intermittent outbursts of movement. That Solid Gold performance is such a thing of beauty!

On the positive side, she looked fantastic.

I totally agree with you. She did look amazing but that performance was dreadful...I thought the 2007 performance on Ellen was a million times better all the way around from voice to energy level to commitment. I still can't believe she actually did that song again! Geeez. And to make matters worse, I watched the show with someone I'm dating who was/is a fan from back in the day so this was my opportunity to reintroduce him to the "modern" Stevie. I felt almost embarrassed, wanting to explain that she usually performs a lot better than that. :sorry:

David, do you think her voice is just unsalvageable for live performances at this point?Well, I mean for me I would say unfortunately that's the case. But look at all the others who adore that sound. We all have different ears.

And who knows what might happen? It was only a couple of years after the ugly-sounding Timespace tour that Stevie demonstrated the richness & vibrato of the 1994 tour.

She seems to run out of breath a lot while she's singing live (where you have to force projection a lot more than singing in a studio). She pushes all the air out of her lungs & is then forced to continue holding a note, which gives it that strident, harsh sound--very flat & without tone.

As one ages, too, one breathes more shallowly. The muscles of one's diaphragm lose strength & elasticity. If I were Stevie's vocal coach, I'd say, "Sing however you want, but let's work on increasing core strength, building whatever abdominal muscles we can still build at your age."

Interesting. To my ears she's either "lost" some of what made her voice unique or she picks and chooses when to use it. For instance, I hear "it" again in this new single and I also heard it on "Say Goodbye". But, I don't hear it often.

Winded, yes. Hoarse and bellowing? Wrong decade.

Please skip to the 03:39 point for a hoarse bellow. Which sounds delicious to me.

Ok, I do like that but it does sound like she was stripping her chords.

I have to say, I agree. However, women's voices are generally at their peak in their thirties and after that range diminishes and lowers. So if Stevie were a normal person who aged, that might have something to do with it too :)

I agree with that point to some degree. But she was such a hot mess on the Rock a Little tour. I was at her show in Boston - the first time seeing her live. I was so dissapointed in her performance -- her vocal mannerisms ran rough-shod over the songs to the point they were barely recognizable. Her pacing was all off, and no one could understand what the hell she was saying when she talked to the audience - she was in another world. I thought, " I know she is better than this."

The performance of "Stand Back" posted here pretty much sums up how she, in a spastic coked-out dillerium, delivered all of her songs. Look how she competely fu*ked up the lyrics! Instead of singing the second stanza of the second verse, she forgets it and goes right into the chorus, while the band, lock-stepped in the arrangement, plays on. She attempts to recover, but has completely lost her place. I wonder what her band members must thought of her condition at this point.

Just got done listening to her radio interview on 94.7 WCSX (Nickslive has a link). Stevie just said that she wanted to do a different song on her last appearance on Ellen, since they'd done "Stand Back" the first time they were on. Apparently it was Ellen who INSISTED that they play "Stand Back" again...and whatever Ellen wants, Ellen gets. ;)

Bahaha she also answered our question as to what the "we already passed it" line meant AND she said her family isn't ANY religion when she was talking about Xmas with Michelle Saturday, which answered our Is Stevie A Christian? thread and the day after we freak out about Lady From the Mountain, she starts talking about the song in interviews! Something makes me think she browses the ledge ;) Perhaps she will start calling herself La Nicks and dropping the term chiffonhead everywhere!

I'm going to be obnoxious, and throw out a big ol' "told you so." To no one in particular, just out into the ether.
Because according to her, the line means, "We've already passed it--we already know this cannot work. Because of, what? Other people?"
And I maintain that it's pretty similar to what I posted in the debate a month ago: "They're still in love, but are already "paying the price" for their affair, and don't know where to go from here. So in saying "we already passed it," she's saying that although she wants to be held, they've passed the time when they could be together without consequences. "

And I was shot down! Well, you know, kind of. Gently and politely shot down. Validation!

Anyway, it was a cute interview. I started off pretty awkward--he kept trying to interject, and she was not having it. But they found a rhythm, and she sounded adorable.

And, for the record, I tend to usually think it could go a multiple of ways with her writing, so it was really cool to hear it from her and in a way that made sense to me. Especially since it was something we had discussed recently and was a big question mark to me.
