Christine McVie is Fleetwood Mac.
The TRUTH. If she'd only spun around like a drunken crackhead....
i was in Philly area this weekend, listening to their classic rock station while driving around. they had a Fleetwood Mac weekend, and kept advertising Lindsey's upcoming show in the area at the end of April, having several ticket giveaways for it (properly mentioning him as "Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac" none of the ex bs). actually pretty sure there was a presale at the site through that radio station too, last week, with password that their listeners could get.
it was a nice unexpected surprise!
they mostly played stuff from 5 FM Classic 5 era albums, and i also heard some Bob Welch era songs.

I've heard "In The Skies" and a Christine Perfect song on that channel, which is exactly what I'd hoped it would be. OTOH, on my way back from a Fleetwood Mac show, they played "Stand On The Rock." Yeah, I guess it's a deep track, but why? "Intuition" would be something that would blow my mind, but "Stand On The Rock" just felt...pointless. There's a big difference between deep cuts worth playing and album filler.

One person's deep track is another person's album filler and vice versa. IMHO a deep track is just that......something that was never a single and a rare song from an album. I think Stand on the rock would fit with that definition IMHO.

Yesterday on Howard Stern he played the entire Dance version of Silver Springs. He pretended to be Casey Kasem and talked over the entire song giving out the facts of the songs like how it was a B side to Go Your Own Way and how Stevie got the title from seeing the Silver Springs sign in Maryland.
Howard thought it was a revenge song. I never saw it that way. Its clearly a spurned lover song. But Howard's take was that Stevie put her revenge in the song that it would be played on the radio forever as a revenge to Lindsey.

I was sealing my driveway this morning and was playing Siriusxm Yacht Rock on my computer through the bedroom window. Heard YMLF and then the next hour Love In Store. While I was working, I began thinking again how I wish the Mac would have done Love in store as and encore on the On With The Show tour. Its up tempo and features all singers. Then I thought about Christine writing it with Jim Recor who was married to Sara (Stevie's best friend and soon to be Sara Fleetwood). When the Mac toured with Loggins and Messina in 1975 there were several friendships that carried on and had an impact on music. Stevie met Kenny and then recorded Whenever I call you friend. Jim Recor was I believe the road manager for Loggins and Messina and Jim wrote Love In Store with Chris. Stevie got a best friend Sara who eventually married Mick and then became one of her background singers. To say the least, the Mac really got along with the Loggins and Messina crowd ;)

I forgot to post this last week but last Saturday was listening to Casey Kasem Top 40 countdown 1977 on Sirius 70s. Dreams had just dropped from the #1 spot and was at #7. Lucile by Kenny Rogers was #6.
Made me think again about the discussion/debate Dreams/Hold Me which is the bigger hit. Dreams shot like a cannon to the #1 spot and dropped like a rock. Hold Me was on the charts longer, had a much longer stay in the top 10, and finished the year a higher position in 1982 than Dreams did in 1977. Both were both big hits but its still an odd comparison. Dreams has been played at almost every Stevie solo show and performed at every FM concert for decades. Yet Hold Me is like a sasquatch in the woods. Its an extremely rare song to hear live. The Mirage tour was very short and Chris's solo tour was even shorter. We never really heard it live again until Buck/Vie. You hear Dreams on the radio everyday somewhere. Dreams is also a gold and platinum single. Hold Me is not. Dreams has bragging rights for being the highest charting FM single but chart success i.e. "biggest hit" has to go to Hold Me. (in the United States)
On another note Gold by John Stewart was #17 this week in 1979 ;)

That's a song I NEVER tire of. I love everything about it!
Me too. It brings me right back to 1979 and even though I had never been to California at that age, it made me feel California when the lights go down cruising and driving over Kanyan. The song's sparse drumming and funk feel really grabbed me even at 9 years old. Stevie did a great job and her yell at the end is classic. I felt the desperation of the musician trying to make it and turn everything Gold.
It was fantastic that Stevie put it on her Enchanted box set. I only had it as a '45 that I found in a record store around 1983. It was such a find and I literally struck gold.
Not to annoy you but the song has something that I love and you hate and that is the back up vocalist being slightly off. I love that effect. Its on Edge of 17, Stand Back, etc. It has such a live sound and not so overly rehearsed feel.
In 1979 I wanted so much to pump gas and make $2.50 per hour. The way Stevie sings the word Gold still gives me goosebumps to this day. NO ONE could have done it like that. The flip side of the '45 was Midnight Wind and its been talked about on this forum that that song could be Stevie's best vocal ever. The way Stevie throws her voice singing Miranda is stunning. Midnight Wind is a prequel to Sisters of the Moon at the beginning. You can hear Lindsey's influence. The way Stevie almost seems to lose her place in the back up vocals and falls behind John in the second chorus is orgasmic its so damn good. Stevie uses the same oooooooos as in Sisters.

I stop posting hearing songs here because you hear them every day on the radio or in a store. I only post rare songs. Yesterday I heard Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind in the grocery store. Today I heard Everyday in the grocery store. What a dreadful song. Its such a basic music track and Stevie's vocal is not great on it either. A huge missed opportunity for Stevie to be sent such a horrific song to record.

There’s a thread here somewhere where we all selected what we thought was the best track from each FM record. I remember so many from your list, including “Angel” (1974), “Crystal” (1975), “YMLF” (1977), and “Brown Eyes” (1979). Can’t recall what you picked for Mirage, but I remember thinking: “Huh, he digs “Big Love” more than “Little Lies”— must be a size queen…” ;)
But we’re all allowed to change our minds 5 billion times. Don’t be creeped that I remember so much of your list (also including “Woman of 1000 Years,” “Revelation,” and “The City.”)

I dont like Rod Stewart but I love Baby Jane. It was #14 this week hitting its peak. It was Rod's most successful song since Do Ya Think I'm Sexy even though it did not do that great in the States. It was #1 UK, Spain, and a monster hit in other European Countries. Its a Mistake is Men At Work's best song yet its not the song you ever hear today on the radio. Its sort of forgotten.

Now this is freaky.
I went to a gas station early this morning to get air in my tires. Someone was using the air pump so I was waiting outside my car. The gas station had music outside and Gypsy came on. I had a few minute wait for the other guy so I decided to take my valve caps off and put them in the car while I was waiting. I took them off and opened my car door and I heard Gypsy coming from the inside of my car. Gypsy was on Yacht Rock Sirius. I mentally told myself...you idiot the music is coming from your car, not the gas station. Then I went back outside my car and could hear the ending of Gypsy. Both the gas station and my radio station were both playing Gypsy. The gas station was Gypsy was ending when the radio Gypsy was mid-way. Altough they started within a minute or two of each other.
Now THAT is truly an "unexptected" Fleetwood Mac. What are the chances.

Today on the 80s countdown this week in 1982 Gypsy was at its peak at #12. Ironically a song from the Fast Times soundtrack, Jackson Browne's Somebody's Baby was at #13. It made me think that one of Stevie's best songs was given to a teenage comedy movie that was sort of lost. But back then the cutting room floor even for Bella Donna was full of gems. Alan Hunter said something that I necessarily dont believe. He said that Gypsy was supposed to be on Bella Donna but she "purposely" yanked it to give to Fleetwood Mac. Has anyone heard that before? I find that odd since there were many songs that were supposed to be on Bella Donna but they had to limit to 10. No doubt it was a demo that could have been on Bella Donna but with the intent of its so special it needs to go to the Mac seems a bridge too far.

"He said that Gypsy was supposed to be on Bella Donna but she "purposely"
This is true.
She originally worked out/developed Gypsy with Tom Petty during the Bella Donna recording sessions.
I have about 4 hours of Gypsy Master Reels. So many different versions. Arrangement and tempo are very similar to what ended up on Mirage. Just doesn't have Lindsey distinctive guitar playing.

So she thought it was "too good" for her first solo album? Could be true but does it not sound like Monday morning quarterbacking? She just had a monster solo album and was giving away Gypsy as a consolation prize?
She should have kept Sleeping Angel and given Fast Times Gold and Braid.

Stevie's songs including the utterly majestic "Gypsy" were what she had saved for us after recording her first album, Bella Donna.

No one disputes she "saved it" for the Mac just like she "saved" Thats Alright and other songs.
I never heard that she "pulled it" from Bella Donna to give to the Mac with the intention it was intended for them. If you are rehearsing the song for your solo album that means you intended to use it. It just did not make the final cut like Gold and Braid and others.
You could make that argument about Thats Alright too.
IMHO it just seems because Gypsy turned out to be such a defining Mac song that she may be embellishing the story a bit. Lets be real, if Jimmy wanted it on Bella Donna or thought it should be on Bella Donna....it would have been on Bella Donna.
