I've met the ol' gal a couple of different times. She essentially just ignored me. One time--this was in '80--she was busy stringing beads on some kids.
Well she wanted to kick you really hard in the nuts but there were too many kids around ;)
And yes check your calendar!

i think the ones you really nailed are the ones about tom petty, her true loves, the reason she tours as much as she does, and the truth about her feelings about not having kids. i love when other people root around inside my head and manage to pull out exactly what i believe yet don't always think to express here. :xoxo:
I've just had plenty of time to think Stevie but not actually put any of it into words so it's all built up!

just reading everyone's opinions about Stevie (Should get around to adding my opinion, But since opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one and they smell I will wait a bit before I answer)...And listening to Symphony X's "The Odyssey"
Back to everyone's opinions...

Hi everybody! Long time, no see. But I couldn't miss this topic! Ghosttracker, I usually agree with you but I don't on this one.
1. I think Stevie has had the hugest crush on Tom Petty since she met him and Tom looks at Stevie as the little sister he never had and is enchanted by her half the time and completely annoyed by her the other half. I think he might be the one musician she didn't do.
2. I think Stevie has had lesbian *affairs* but nothing serious. Just flings.
3. I think Stevie's greatest loves are:
Fleetwood
Walsh
Buckingham
Henley
In that order
On edit: There was another great love of Stevie's. She hooked up with him in San Francisco while she was with Lindsey in the early 70s and had to decide between the two. I think he is neck and neck with Lindsey in the *greatest loves* department. I think she still thinks about him.
4. I think Stevie has had more than a few *almost serious* relationships in the last 10 years.
Buckingham wasn't one of them
5. I think Stevie isn't the one packin up, shackin up these days and that Buckingham not only hasn't hooked back up with her in the last 20 years but has hooked up with at least one non-Stevie in the last few.
I think that pisses Stevie off but only because of pride
6. I love Street Angel
7. Stevie still smokes
Both weed and cigs
8. I think Stevie is a snob but doesn't know it
9. I think Stevie is clingy to this day to Mick and needs him by her side at functions and in personal life. I think his wife gets this and has made peace with it. I think they need each other in almost a spiritual way that won't die until one of them do
And probably not even then
10. I think Stevie tours and works all the time because she can't face her personal life or how her life has turned out in other areas. Her work is her distraction and her escape. If she stopped touring, she might melt down
11. I think Stevie wishes she had had kids. The whole *giving it up for the sake of her art* is a ruse. She never hooked up with the right guy at the right time, made ****ty choices and by the time she figured all that out and got clean, it was too late. The *giving it up* thing is to mask the pain that has caused her
I'll think of more later but the last one is:
12. I don't think anything is ever on the surface with Stevie. She sticks with what she knows, which is making great music. Everything else, and even to herself, should be taken with a grain of salt. She hasn't figured herself out so the rest of the world doesn't stand a chance. But she knows she's loved and adored by millions and that's what gets her through the night.
Beauitifully stated. What a wonderful post and I agree with a lot of what you said, especially 10, 11, and 12. Welcome back my dear! Where have you been? You must pm me and let me know what's up. I've missed you Sue, we have a lot of catching up to do.

I was wondering if I was the only one who suspected that Stevie never actually slept with Tom Petty. Apparently not. Their relationship seems different than all of the others. I don't think I've ever heard her say something bad about him.
I completely agree that Stevie wouldn't know what to do with herself if she stopped touring. She seems to have a profound fear of staying in one place.

Mick is not Stevie's greatest love, IMHO. She would not be flaunting Mick if she was still in love with him either. He is convenient and no threat. Mick has actually caused problems in her life, esp during SYW.
In the last ten years I do not think Stevie has dated anyone seriously. I do not think Petty looked at Stevie like anything other than a sister. Tom also "'gets"' her realtionship with Buckingham. He wrote Insider, enuff said. Stevie, at one point, I think, wanted Tom in a big way, I think it was more of a conquest challenge type thing. I agree Stevie smokes...alot...cigarettes and weed. There are some who have rose colored glasses and think she is a good girl. Stevie likes her pot as much as Lindsey, IMHO. I do not think she ever had a lesbian relationship but maybe she experimented with her man and another girl? I def do not think she is a lesbian who is secretly in love with Sheryl Crow and Lori Nicks though...I find that talk ridiculous.
I have always thought she strongly wanted children and Stevie used to express that sentiment all the time. It was only after she got "'too old"' to have them that we started hearing about it being a decision she consciously made. It had nothing to do with finding the right guy at the right time either. I think this was actually a huge cause of her depression in the early 90s. The crap she spins now about compromising her art if she would have had children is what she says publically........I do not think it is what she feels deep inside.
I think it is a given she has been with Buckingham in the last 20 years at some point. Hell, the last month!

The Reeboks don't bother me.
I think she should have opened for Sheryl Crow on the TISL tour.
Some of her songs ("Destiny," anyone?) are utter crap.
"Landslide" is overrated.
I'm sick to death of "Dreams."
"Storms" isn't that good.
Stevie should open her shows with "I Need To Know."
I'm sick to death of the studio version of "Stand Back."

I've often wondered. I've never thought of Stevie as a bitch. She has always seemed to me way too sweet to everyone all the time. That's one of the reasons I don't really love her. But other people have told me that they thought Stevie might be bitchy in a prima donna way.
I've had some time to think about this and I would like to clarify my thoughts a bit. "Bitch" is not the right word, as far as I'm concerned. I have often suspected that Stevie was a bit on the conceited side. Not her looks, but regarding her talent. As I stated earlier, just a tad self-important.
And as far as her relationships go, I think the whole "it's too hard to have a relationship with a famous woman...she's always leaving..." is B.S. People do it all the time. I think Stevie likes her gypsy life (she's *always* had one) and uses that as an excuse not to be involved in a serious relationship.

OH-kay, so how's THIS for an unpopular Stevie opinion???
Stevie's lyrics are NOT obscure!!! They're PERFECTLY CLEAR to anyone who is paying attention and reads between the lines! ( With the obvious exception of "Sable on Blonde." ) grrrrrr!!! BARK-BARK-BARK!!! GROOOWWWL.
okay, thanks, I just needed to get that off my chest. :blob1:

What are you talking about?
"Life, the Universe, and - well - YOU know - - - EVERY-thing!!!"
( i.m.o., couples often tend to follow a pattern where, when they're young, one is more "assertive," one more "bitchy," one more "shy," etc. I can tell you for a fact that my parents have been married for decades, and in way, to a point, it's definitely happened with them. Assuming that I'm right that this has happened, to see it happen with Lindsey and Stevie is just amazing. I'm not saying they're together - What I am saying is that it's pretty freaking amazing to see the pattern "assert itself" anyway.
Assuming I'm right, it's more than a little bit interesting. )
P.S. - I know it's more complex than that, and just for example, Stevie was known for being "outgoing" when she was young - but couldn't it be said, for example, that at first she was really shy and somewhat submissive in the studio, compared to Lindsey being the assertive one who was so sure of himself and would never, never cry in front of her in a million years? It's classic.

Question: a couple of people had a comment about her personal assistant ( someone said she was scary, another person said she could take a hike etc), what's up with that? Isn't she nice to the fans????
No, Karen is not nice to Stevie fans, is pretty much a bitch!

I think Stevie likes her gypsy life (she's *always* had one) and uses that as an excuse not to be involved in a serious relationship.
I think there may be something more to it. . . . While I still feel that Stevie isn't as wealthy as some people view her - sorry but Bill Gates she's not, there's LITERALLY thousands of people in the U.S. alone who are MANY times wealthier than she - she still is, bottom-line, an extremely wealthy person. While "something of a dreamer," I'm sure she's pretty realistic about what the "statistics" would predict about someone in her position ( Big Wealthy Famous Busy Rock Star ) - getting married - whether it would last over the long term. Stevie has worked and fought HARD for whatever money she does have, and it's VERY important to her because - well, let's just say she almost certainly is big on "generational wealth" and leave it at that. That trailer on the hill left a mark, i.m.o. I really do feel that it's almost 100% that the things her grandfather taught her weren't exactly done idly -
this guy was "smarter than he looked." She also wants to donate large amounts of money to charity - City of Hope, Arizona Heart Institute, etc., and now I guess also for the soldiers. This stuff runs VERY deep and it would be very hard for Stevie to even take a chance of not being able to do these things to the degree she wants (and has been taught to...).

No, Karen is not nice to Stevie fans, is pretty much a bitch!Of course, fans who naively believe it's the assistant's job to be nice to them are going to be mightily disappointed. The assistant's job is to assist the star, not the fans. Another part of the assistant's job -- very similar to the responsibility of the rest of the support staff -- is to provide a b-a-r-r-i-e-r for the star.
The people who work for Stevie are there to keep YOU away, fans. Those of you who quit trying to worm your away into Stevie's presence won't be subject to any of the support staff's "rudeness."

Just for your information, I have NOT tried to "worm my AWAY into Stevie's presence" - and have friends who have actually been invited BY Stevie herself to visit, and Karen's been a real bitch to them. I am not stupid and have been on this earth for quite a few years and know that the assistants are there to protect the star. They might be there to ward off the smartasses and hypocrites like yourself though.
And since you have met "the ol gal" - you two didn't try to meet her at all - no? You really just wanted to pass up the opportunity and then someone twisted your arm right?

I saw Karen in Vegas last May trying to get Stevie checked out. I didn't dare talk to her or anything and didn't really care to either, but I sat back and watched her. I don't know her and am not getting in this argument either way, but she was being rather bitchy with everyone that came in contact with her, from hotel staff to other people around her. Take it for what it's worth.

I've seen Karen but not enough to judge weather or not she's bitchy since I only got a glimpse. My point is you can be an assistant and not be bitchy and I've heard this numerous times about Karen. That's too bad if it's true.

Don't forget there's been lots of psychos after Stevie over the years; we know of at least three, one of whom wanted to "kidnap her and have her cure his homosexuality with her magical powers" (or whateva). That would certainly make me paranoid if I were an assistant or bodyguard or whateva. I know most fans don't go running up to at top speed shouting "STEVIE, STEVIE, OH MY GOD STEEE-viie" at the top of their lungs while drawing . . . SOME-thing . . . out of their pockets (a pen? a gun?
in Madonna's case it was a knife) - but still - there's a line that's hard to see sometimes, and there's VERY little time to make a decision.
I'll take a bitchy person 8 days a week, twice on Sunday, if it will help to assure Stevie's safety. My only gripe, personally, would be if somebody got physically hurt due to a bodyguard over-reacting and jumping the gun. I couldn't imagine that happening, but it wouldn't shock me, either. But overall, I'd simply prefer that she be safe - and she's not. Not to be grim; I'm just saying, try to see it from their point-of-view, and from Stevie's. What is a big huge thrill for a fan, screaming "STEVIE STEVIE I'm your NUMBER-ONE FAN i just LOVE your MUSIC WHAT is THE TOWER ABOUT OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M FINALLY MEETING YOU!!!" - it's the ten thousandth time Stevie's heard it. Don't get me wrong, I know most fans don't act that way - but again, try to see it from their point-of-view - it's "a matter of degree" and sometimes it's unclear what the situation really is. Anyway, that's the way I see it, personally.
They actually did a very good job of satirizing this on Saturday Night Live, in a skit with Sting - I thought it was really funny, actually!

Oh trust me, I'm all for protecting Stevie but I'm just saying from what I gather people are saying who have met or interracted with her she's a bitchy person in general and there's a difference between that and doing your job. And it's a body guard's job to protect her from crazed fans in public, not the assistant's.
As far as judging Karen I don't think either you nor I or anybody should really be doing it since we don't know her personally nor have we interracted with her (unless you have and I don't know about it).

HERE'S another opinion that may be kind of "unpopular." - Stevie and Lindsey have sort of "reversed roles" at this point in their history. In other words, Stevie used to be "ethereal," "magical," "loopy," etc., talked about there being a "Presence" on stage with her during "Rhiannon," and so on, while Lindsey was the "Practical" one who got the job done yesterday, did it again today twice as good, had his hand on the pulse of American pop culture AND art and could combine the two to make one of the biggest-selling albums of all time, had the foresight to realize that "Tusk" was a survival move for the band over the long-term, etc. Now Stevie's the practical one ( think, "THEY'RE NOT SITTING AROUND ON THE FLOOR SMOKING DOPE! They're DEALING WITH DELINQUINT CHILDREN, FIGURING OUT HOW THEY'RE GOING TO PAY THE MORTGAGE... [etc.]" While Lindsey is off in outer space talking about double-albums and releasing solo albums under a major label after a 6-year absence from the business.... So they've literally done a 180 around each other and switched roles, which seems kinda "classic," ya think???

Okay, this is probably gonna be a VERY unpopular opinion and I'm not totally sure I even believe it myself but, I figured I'd just throw it out there -
Stevie rarely - only VERY rarely - got emotional during the Say You Will and The Dance tours, while performing the songs "Silver Springs," "Goodbye, Baby," and "Landslide." (I consider "Gypsy" and "Beautiful Child" to be separate - I'm talking just about the "Lindsey/Stevie Stuff").
Stevie often felt VERY emotional during "So Afraid," especially during the first part and the parts where she has lines to sing. So much so that she genuinely cried and had to wipe real tears from her eyes....
And that song means more to her, in terms of performing it, than Silver Springs and Landslide combined (in a way, or at least, at some times).

Well, it's less an opinion that I "Officially have," and more something I've wondered about. It's occurred to me that it MIGHT be true. I can tell you that when Stevie's sort of off to the side during "So Afraid" in "The Dance," it seemed to me that she very quickly brought her arm to her face and wiped something off, etc. The camera was behind her at that point - it could have been perspiration, an itch, etc., of course. But I also feel there's reasons that this song would be very emotional for her.

Just when she yanks the little girl up onto stage. It's way too cheezy and not cute. Here's why I like that moment: On the surface, it's all pudgy childhood & goodness & light & insufferable "whimsy" & Disneyfied emotions. But there is a fly on the ointment. As Elaine is gripped & pulled up onstage, her bare knee is banged painfully against the stage edge, with bits of skin & subcutaneous tissue being scraped off. Blood isn't directly visible, but it happens so quickly that I wouldn't be surprised if blood were seeping through & leaving stains on the pugdy childhood dress & even on the arena seats. The patella & possibly the shin bone are banged & bruised with purplish-blueish welts, indicating bleeding below the surface, & lending an alluring darkness & nihilism to the papier-mache paste & starched milk quality of the incident.

Based on whose standards?
Oh, and to the poster who said that they think Stevie has a learning disorder: Stevie didn't have enough of one not to get into college and tough it out a few semesters, so I'd say if she does in fact have a learning disorder it is negligible. .
Please don't misunderstand what I was saying there. I took some classes once at a Medical School and some of the extremely gifted, incredibly intelligent, future Medical Doctors who were Medical Students there - and who had G.P.A.'s in college - while taking hard science courses - of between 3.7 and 4.0 - have learning disorders. It's perfectly possible for someone to be highly intelligent - or even a genius - like Stevie - and still have a learning disorder. I would bet that she has an I.Q. of somewhere around 150 or higher. And, she has a learning disorder. Of course, I'm only guessing, but "I calls it as I sees it."

People have all sorts of fantasies! Luckily, most of them aren't dangerous.
I personally think she has a VERY high I.Q. I've read that the average succesful rock star ( think Steve Perry, Bruce Springstein, Lindsey Buckinham, Jon Bon Jovi ) has an I.Q. of at least 150. I think that sounds about right - my best guess, like I said above, is that Stevie's I.Q. is about 150 or so.
By the way, Mick Fleetwood DOES, for sure, have a diagnosed learning disorder - I believe it's dyslexia, I seem to remember he said that flat-out in his book. And he's also, obviously, highly intelligent.

Wait a minute, she's a personal assistant NOT a bodyguard.....
Part of the job of any Personal Assistant for a Big Star is to "run interference" so that the star can have a freaking moment to breathe once in a while. As someone said in another thread, Stevie owes us nothing, especially including even one second of her time if she doesn't feel up to it. In contrast, the job of a security guard is to use either polite talk, or physical force, or even if necessary, the mace or even gun that Stevie has essentially bought and paid for, in order to keep her safe. Stevie owes us nothing and she has a right to be safe, and even to blow people off when she feels like it. But she has an Image to maintain so - the job falls to Karen to be "the bad guy." That's my take on it - Karen's not a bitch - she's just doing the job that - let's face it - Stevie has asked her to do.
It's not personal, it's business, and sometimes Stevie, as anyone else would, just plain doesn't feel up to it. This goes WAY back, by the way - There was apparently a physical resemblance between Stevie and Robin which was close enough that Robin used to pose as Stevie and sign autographs, while Stevie would sneak out the back. Not very nice, I know, but that was "back in the day." But she still sometimes doesn't feel up to it or doesn't have time, I guess - and then Karen has to be "the bad guy" and people start calling her a bitch.
Anyway, what I'm saying is this:
Karen is "Step One." Her job is to be nice, not nice, etc., as long as Stevie is left alone. So she's paid to be a bitch sometimes.
If Step One is not enough, then it's her job to recognize that and tell the security guard, which of course is step two. So she's part diplomat, part judge, part communicator to the security guard - and maybe sometimes the line is confusing and maybe sometimes she overreacts. Add to that, having a bad day, or being in a bad mood, or just moments ago having to deal with a fan that WAS over the line - and all of a sudden people are saying "Karen's a bitch" and "Stevie's people aren't nice to her fans." I'm very happy to hear that Stevie's people are doing the job that Stevie pays them to do - it means she's safer. And that's another one of my "unpopular Stevie opinions." ;)

That's what her body guards are there for, and having met hers personally, he's a big dude and can most definitely handle any "problem fans" out there, he's more than capable of running interference for Stevie.

I guess it depends on what kind of learning disorder it is and how bad it is. Say for instance, if someone had hard core dyslexia, that would make it extremely difficult for them to read and write college level material, so they would have a hard time maintaining a 4.0 GPA without some kind of tutoring or help of some kind. And then there are grades of dyslexia, my brother-in-law has it so bad that he still cannot hardly even read and write at 22 years old. So given that there are grades in the severity of different learning disorders, if Stevie has one, it must be negligible, so much in fact that it's probably not even worth mentioning ;) Also, where, besides not being able to read music, is the evidence?

Unpopular Stevie opinion #6:
Stevie was just a nice enough young girl in the right place at the right time, when flighty rhymery and a lot of arm-waving and a little country vibrato in your voice and a tiny, sexy body and long hair were the assets you needed to make others swoon....
And of course it helped that she was surrounded by people who could help her make the most of her rhymes and her presentation !

thank you for saying what i was too lazy to. i think people grossly misunderstand how the i.q. system works ... 150 isn't 50% above average, it's completely at the end of the bell curve ...
Nor do IQ tests measure the kind ofcreative/artistic intelligence that most musicians have. IQ is all about logic and problem solving and math and recognizing patterns and ****. If anybody seriously thinks the Queen of the Twirling High Kick Faeries Stevie Nicks would score at all highly on such a test, well (WEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!), then we probably should start talking about your IQ...
(Also, here's another important pattern to recognize in life: People make **** up about rock stars. All the time. When do you think is the last time Stevie Nicks took an IQ test? And where do you think some journalist or music writer would ever get a copy of the results of such a test? And how easy would it be for me to write some article and claim, "Ah, yes, well, you see, Peter Frampton has an IQ of 133"?)
(I just made that Frampton IQ number up,for those of you who are wondering.)
(It amazes me sometimes that so many Stevie fans will never believe a word that comes out of the woman's own mouth, but they'll believe anything that some know-nothing shlub writes about her.)

Poor Stevie. There is no way her IQ is in the genius range.
~Sasja
Well, I can see this side to it but - what I say is, listen to "the coffee house tapes" sometime - the tapes Stevie and Lindsey made together way back in 1970 or so, maybe '71. Stevie isn't a flighty rhymery with a lot of arm-wayving and a little country vibrato in her voice singer. Never has been, never will be. It's just one of many, many things Stevie and Lindsey tried back when they were trying to break in and make it big. The one people see is just simply the one that happened to work. I agree with the rest of that sentence though!
Really though, I DO agree that other people ( *cough* - LINDSEY! ) - have been of great assistance in Arranging her music, making it more marketable, etc., but still, she has a certain "knack." And I still claim that whatever her I.Q. happens to be, it's higher than most people realize. There's different scales, but on one of them, 150 isn't "at the far end of the bell curve" - I've known plenty of people in that range. And for whatever it's worth I did read that most successful rock stars have an I.Q. of 150 or higher.
There really are different scales by the way - according to one of them, Einstein's I.Q. was "only" 160. But by another scale, it was well over 225.
Mostly though, my personal opinion is that Stevie has what they call "Emotional Intelligence" (in terms of being able to write the types of songs she does). But I could easily picture her not doing as well on the "math" or "logic" parts...
Anyway I think maybe my main point is, yeah, I can see that maybe there was some luck involved - but I seriously doubt that this level of success happened completely by accident. Rumours was the third-highest selling record of all time for decades, and many people have felt that Stevie had a lot to do with that. And right there is where the Lindsey thing comes in, of course, since he Arranged all of her music on it. ;) But overall I feel it's closer to the truth to over-estimate her, rather than under-estimate her. In my opinion, whatever terms you use, this is somebody that's got some marbles somewhere in there.

All this IQ talk got me to research the distribution. This is from wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ#IQ_score_distribution
I have also read that Stevie has a "high" IQ, but don't it's anywhere near 150. According to the table below, if Stevie's IQ is 150 she is the top .04%
IQ score distribution
IQ score distribution IQ Range Percentile Range
Below 30 0 – 0.0002
30 to 50 0.0002 – 0.04
50 to 60 0.04 – 0.4
60 to 74 0.4 – 4
74 to 89 4 – 23
89 to 100 23 – 50
100 to 111 50 – 77
111 to 120 77 – 91
120 to 125 91 – 95
125 to 132 95 – 98
132 to 137 98 – 99.3
137 to 150 99.3 – 99.96
above 150 99.96 – 100
IQ scores are expressed as a number normalized so that the average IQ in an age group is 100. In other words, an individual scoring 115 is above average when compared to people in the same age group. It is common practice to standardize so that the standard deviation (σ) of scores is 15, although some IQ tests use different scales (for example, the Stanford Binet IQ test uses a standard deviation of 16, and the Cattell IIIB test uses a standard deviation of 24). Tests are designed so that the distribution of IQ scores is Gaussian; that is, it follows a bell curve. A difference has been documented between the IQ score distributions of left-handed and right-handed test subjects; the distribution in left-handed people tends to cluster at the two extremes of the IQ scale.
(The following numbers apply to IQ scales standard deviation σ = 15.) Roughly 68% of the population has an IQ between 85 and 115. The "normal" range, or range between −2 and +2 standard deviations from the mean, is between 70 and 130, and contains about 95% of the population. An accurate score below 70 may indicate mental retardation, and a score above 130 may indicate intellectual giftedness. Retardation may result from normal variation or from a genetic or developmental malady; analogously, some otherwise normal people are very short, and others have dwarfism. Giftedness appears to be normal variation; autistic savants have often astonishing cognitive powers but below-average IQ's.
It has been observed that scores outside the range 55 to 145 must be cautiously interpreted because there are smaller numbers of respondents with which to make comparisons in those ranges. Moreover, at such extreme values, the normal distribution is a less accurate estimate of the true IQ distribution.
In actuality there is a higher percentage of the population measured at 3 or more standard deviation levels on the test than the probabilities of the normal distribution would predict (Lewis Terman, Genetic Studies of Genius, 1959). Some IQ scoring procedures may attempt to integrate such clusters of statistical outliers into the curve by adjusting the scores so that they better represent actual probabilities (according to Silverman) and in these cases, scores around 145 and above may actually have been notably higher, were they not so adjusted.
Most IQ tests in the United States tend to use a SD-15 or SD-16 scale, meaning that one standard deviation corresponds to +/- 16 points on the IQ scale. However, European IQ tests tend to use a SD-24 or SD-25 scale, resulting in discrepancies. Therefore, an IQ of 130 (+2 standard deviations) in the U.S. might correspond to an IQ of 148-150 in Europe. Due to these differences, percentiles are more accurate measurements than IQ numbers.

I Also, where, besides not being able to read music, is the evidence?
I don't consider this to be evidence - just something I thought was interesting - in an interview which is available on youtube, Sandra Bernhardt was interviewing Stevie and she gave her a greeting card with something she had written. Stevie looked at it for a moment and got this embarrassed look on her face, and Sandra Bernhardt asked her if she should read it for her and Stevie said yes and acted kind of awkward and a little embarrassed and quickly dropped some sort of flimsy line about "my glasses, you know.!"
And I could be totally wrong but it seemed like Bernhardt realized what was going on and covered for her. I'm not saying that Stevie can't read, as a matter of fact she mentioned on "Ask Stevie" on Nicksfix that she had been reading Wheel of Fortune, which is a very long and pretty complex novel, I believe. But there may be some difficulties with how she perceives words on the written page, or something.
I could be totally wrong, of course, but it's my belief that Mr. Nicks, Stevie, and Lindsey all dropped hints about this "in between the lines." Mr. Nicks, for example, mentioned something in an interview about how Stevie has perservered despite the challenges she's been faced with, and he became very emotional while describing this. This was before he was even aware of what was going on in her "rock star" life - he was apparently totally oblivious to all that at that point. I could be totally wrong, of course, but my honest belief is that one of those difficulties was some kind of learning problem. Not one that was so severe that she couldn't do well in school, but one which gave her some challenges to overcome and caused her to process information a little differently. Which doesn't mean she's not highly intelligent or even a genius, in certain ways.
Another piece of admittedly flimsy evidence is her difficulties with basic tense changes and her stubborness about changing them to the correct form. I said the opposite in another post, I admit, that it's "just the poet that she is," but these mistakes, in my opinion, aren't intentional - she has difficulty knowing what the correct form is. And yes, as another person said, she DID GO to high school and several years of college - and yet these things cause her great difficulty (i.m.o.). Also, before sararhiannon.com went down, some of her original writing was on there - she has (or had back then) extreme difficulties spelling simple words correctly. I don't think these were isolated incidents due to not paying attention, being lazy, "it's only a first draft," etc. - this was what they would call a "repeated pattern" - something that went beyond simple mistakes which happen when anyone's writing a first draft of something. Anyway that's the best I can answer - I consider her to be a highly intelligent person who has had some learning challenges to overcome, and I think she's done so wonderfully.

For whatever it's worth (very little, many would feel), on paper a 115 I.Q. means that a person should be able to do, for example, schoolwork that a 12 year old could do without extreme difficulty, when they are 10 years old. It's certainly not "low." But I'm sure many, many people would feel that the whole thing is just buschwa anyway. By the way, for whatever it's worth, George Bush's is 140.  So uhhh...

yes, an iq of 115 is good! 115 is one standard deviation above average, which puts you in about the 80th percentile.

I'm not familiar with all the different scales but this, of course, is not the one I meant with my claim that "Stevie has an I.Q. of 150 or so." Really what I meant was sort of a "dummied down" version - if they were able to work around any difficulties she may have had (and if school had interested her enough), then I bet she would have been able to do college-level work while still a young teenager. But maturity is important for that also, of course, at least in a way, and even if the opportunity had presented itself I doubt she would have felt ready. Anyway I really mean it more as a sort of "rule of thumb" - like, 1.5 X 10 years old = 15 year old's abilities by the age of ten - or, since there's maturity issues as well, then 1.5 X 20 years old = 30 year old's abilities by the age of 20. Yeah, I realize I'm being HORRIBLY unscientific and inaccurate here, I'm just sayin', like, "general rule of thumb" stuff. ANY-way my only real point was, don't underestimate her, in her own way she's "smarter than she looks."

Uhm, like I said in a different post, I think maybe there's different scales. One of them ( the one you posted ) is apparently much more "demanding" and there's far fewer people who are "high up on the charts." I would imagine that the family of someone who wants to be President would tend to emphasize the one they felt made him look "smarter," if 'ya catch my drift. ;) For what-
ever it's worth I read that both George Bush Senior's and Bill Clinton's I.Q.'s are 180. ANY-way obviously they're just numbers and many people feel that they mean nothing anyway. Stevie could sit around and be the smartest person in the world, but if she had never written a song in her life or whatever, no one would even know it.

Well, let me phrase it like this - I seriously doubt George W. Bush is in the "99.3 – 99.96" percentile range. But with highly-skilled tutors, plenty of time, a good learning envirnment, etc., I could picture him being able to do schoolwork at the level of a 14-year old, when he was 10. (Again, assuming no motivational problems, etc.) In the same way, I could picture Stevie writing songs at age 25 that most "average" songwriters couldn't even come NEAR until age 37, 38 or so. Again, I know it doesn't really work that way; I'm just saying like, "general rule of thumb."

This whole IQ conversation is weirding me out. There is no way we can speculate what Stevie or anyone else's IQ is. And even if we did have that information, it would make no difference, really. I definitely don't want to come off sounding like I'm an expert--I'm not-- but I do have a B.S. in Psychology and I know that these numbers are really unimportant. That being said, an IQ of 150 is waaay over the top 2% of the population, which is roughly 130. Somehow I'm thinking Stevie, along with all these "other rock stars", isn't mensa level.
Why can't we just say that we think Stevie is really smart? Why do we have to put a number out there that is not even verified?
David- if you took an IQ test and scored 115, then that's really good! But again, these results are really not considered important when looking at intelligence.

To use IQ tests for me is a presumptuous, unimportant and pathetic attempt to try to predict the future, and rationalize other people's attitudes, IMO.
The intelligence I care for it measures the way you survive to your talent, expressed or unexpressed, whatever it is, singing, sewing, fishing, etc. I'd say that someone who after more than thirty years in the show business, passing through break-ups, drugs, greedy entourages, thousands of concerts, losses of every genres, is still there alive kicking and rocking is very intelligent.
Maybe those who keep treating Stevie as a rock doll, should think for a moment on the way they are coping with their talent... if they really know what is it.

Thanks Tiff, that Elanie performance was so adorable. I bet the whole thing was staged though. Does anybody know the story behind Elaine? Was she a roadie's daughter perhaps or related to someone Stevie knew? I wonder where Elaine is right now and if she's a big Stevie fan. I bet she could hunt Stevie down and find her and be like "I'm Elaine, you twirled me in your arms in 83!" (if Stevie remembers). Ha ha that would be funnny.

Bush didn't qualify to get into University of Texas law school.
Many don't. It's a very prestigious and difficult law school to get into. Texas turned him down but Harvard accepted him: yeah, because Harvard has a lesser law school and all they care about is money and influence so . But anyway, I relish the fact that Texas turned him down, yet another reason why I am proud to call myself a Longhorn .

I have my own theory about Einstein. I do not believe he was learning disabled.
Anyway, two isn't many and none of those that you mentioned are neurosurgeons. A Google search of John Wisniewski, M.D reveals little and a similar search on Elfriede Jelinek produces no evidence of a learning disability.
A list of three people is hardly what I'd call many.

great thread idea!
Here are my unpopular Stevie opinions:
1. Street Angel is a really good album. Taken as a whole, it's better than Rock A Little or TOSOTM.
2. Trouble in Shangri-La is great too. But she should have left off the very self indulgent That Made Me Stronger, and used the demo version of Love Is.
3. The only men Stevie was ever truly in love with were Lindsey Buckingham and Joe Walsh. She loved Lindsey, but knew that he loved her more than she loved him, and so used him to some extent. With Joe Walsh, she loved him more, and was very hurt when he dumped her. I also think Stevie was in love with Robin. (I'm NOT implying that they had a sexual relationship...but Stevie was in love with Robin.)
4. The real reason she didn't want to have kids is that it would cramp her style. She was having too much fun in the crazy rock and roll world to take care of her health the way you need to when you're pregnant.
5. I can't stand her hand movements in concert.
6. Stevie was a "Daddy's girl" - spoiled, pampered. During her early days in LA with Lindsey, her parents still sent her money when things got tight. She never knew what it was like to be totally on her own, with no one else to count on. Though I will say - she is not unsympathetic to people who fall on hard times - her sense of empathy is genuine.
7. I don't buy her "I just KNEW I was going to be a famous rock and roll star" line. She wasn't predestined for her life - it was part vocal talent, part songwriting talent, part Lindsey's amazing production talent, part physical beauty, and a lot of luck.

In a way I feel like this is none of my damn business, but she's been so public about this that I guess it's okay for me to say this -
True, they sent her money - but no where near what they were able to afford. They just sent her enough to just barely keep going, and I don't mean in a "spoiled Daddy's girl" kind of way - I mean it was tight. They were REALLY putting the pressure on, and I'm not entirely convinced that her parents were 100% supportive of this.
7. I don't buy her "I just KNEW I was going to be a famous rock and roll star" line. She wasn't predestined for her life - it was part vocal talent, part songwriting talent, part Lindsey's amazing production talent, part physical beauty, and a lot of luck
Whenever she says this, be sure to catch her next interview. That way you can hear her talking about how lucky they were and how much chance was involved in this.
I'm sure she appreciates that they were fortunate.
I love how in the "Live in Boston" concert, Lindsey says, "And - NOT long after, we were very lucky to run in to THESE guys back HERE!" And John shakes his head up and down to say yes, and seems to say, "YES! YES that's TRUE, he's RIGHT! YES they WERE!" And you suddenly realize that his asking price for kicking Buckingham's *** has gone up from a dollar to a buck-forty - inflation, you know! ;) But also, I think part of what Lindsey said there was in response to some comments that Stevie has made about how long they struggled for before they made it big - I think maybe L.B. sees it in more relative terms and feels that many stars who have now made it big struggled first, for even longer than they had to. Madonna, I believe, may be an example of that.
But by the way, while I feel she's very bright and, of course, writes wonderful, brilliant songs, I don't think Stevie's always all that good at expressing herself in a traditional way. I think it's possible that what she's actually trying to say is, "This all seems so unlikely, it sometimes seems to me that there must be some sort of 'reason' for it - like if God wanted this to happen or something. This has all been very heavy and I feel like there must have been some sort of purpose or Design behind it."

They were shooting TUSK video....No, Stevie, Mick & Lindsey were special guests for the Trojan halftime show at the USC-Arizona State playoff game at the Coliseum. It was October 1980, about three weeks after the Tusk Tour ended at the Hollywood Bowl. That's what that picture is from.
The Tusk video was shot in June 1979 at Dodger Stadium.

Just a technicality, and no offense intended, but there are no "playoff" games in college football. USC and Arizona State play annually in regular Pac -10 conference play. It's a home and home rotation. Here are the facts, according to the USC media guide: USC defeated ASU 23-21 on October 4, 1980. The attendance was 69,052. USC was ranked #4 in the country at the time. I just thought I would add some trivia.

He & Stevie also showed up around this time at a John Stewart gig at the Palomino, which I saw. I really loved Stevie & Lindsey around this time: I felt they really filled out from earlier in the year, & a fetching weariness had set in with their voice boxes. I was very sad to see the Tusk Tour end, especially when it had only got good during the final month.
And then December 8 came . . . Lennon was shot & killed & the "Live" album was released as a silly compilation of six or eight or ten different shows stretched out across four years or so, instead of the promised single night's show at the Bowl.
Disappointment became our middle name; & we were up against the wall, Jane.

Let’s see. I think that I will take a crack at it.
1. Joe Walsh was the love of her life.
2. Too Materialistic- I did not like the way she went on in a recent interview about never having to look at a price tag, or something like that. She turns it into a proud accomplishment but I see it as arrogance and snobbery.
3. She was extremely wild in the 70s and 80s so much so that in 1986 she was banned from a 5 star hotel in Boston. I am not sure if that still holds true or if it even was true but I sort of believe it.
4. I agree with the poster who said that Stevie did not have children because she did not want to take of herself while being pregnant. Even if she did clean up when she found out that she was pregnant the damage might have already been done and she most likely knew that.
5. Stevie and Lindsey- I think that she still loves LB but that he seems to love her a lot more. I think that she plays a lot of games with LB and maybe in a weird way that is how he ended up getting married to Kristen. BTW, I sometimes wonder if LB is still married to Kristen but hey that is for another thread.
6. I think that she did use LB to an extent.
7. I think that she might have used Paul Fishkin to an extent, too.
8. I think that she did have some kind of fling with Waddy.
9. I don’t think that she slept with all of the men that she worked with but I do think that she slept with a lot.:o
10. I think that she loves Mick but more as a close friend right now. I think that she sees a side of Mick that some others don’t and I think that he and Stevie are alike in someway.

If that's one of the worst things (or most embarrassing) that happened publicly during her drug days I don't consider that a big deal. I'm sure it happens a lot more frequently than you'd think. And plus she's a lucky girl if that's all that happened. She could have been busted for possession or far worse than being banned from the Four Seasons. Even if it is true I don't see the big deal. She's a rock star, she should be proud to be banned from the Four Seasons. Rock on Gold Dust Woman!

*I too think it's complete bull**** that Stevie stopped singing "Silver Springs" on the SYW tour.....something went down in Atlanta *I too think she does, even a little, regret not having kids. She puts sooo much emphasis on why, as if she is trying to convince herself.
:
I don't quite get this - I literally don't understand it. Are all of the first three sentences supposed to be connected together? And I don't understand why something going down in Atlanta would cause her to stop singing Silver Springs. Unless you're thinking maybe S & L had a fight and she was too pissed to sing it anymore??? Or felt she would get emotional and start crying onstage???

You say this as though it's a fact, and not YOUR interpretation of Stevie's previous interviews.
My opinion is that Stevie has made this clear in interviews. Lindsey also. A perfect example is in M.F.'s book (assuming he was being honest, which John McVie just supported): Lindsey and a friend used to take turns bouncing checks at a local Denny's-type restaurant, because they literally had no money for food, despite the fact that Stevie was working as a waitress/cleaning lady etc. Granted that there were certain other . . . expenses, but still, it seems like that would not be true if they were sending her tremendous "Daddy's rich princess" kinda funds. I honestly don't think her parents completely supported this before they got their big break.
Don't forget, "Shacking up" with a guy you weren't married to was viewed MUCH differently back then, and she left college to do this.
The amount "$3500" is somehow popping into my mind - I'm not sure how accurate that is, or how it would translate into today's dollars. If rent was, say, a hundred bucks a month, that would go pretty quickly, especially after Lindsey and his friends got done with it. (There's some interview where Stevie says that when she was working as a waitress, she would come home and Lindsey would be practically passed out on the floor, high on opiated hashish, and he would complain that there was no money. And Stevie told him, "Well, that's cause you're spending all our MONEY on DRUGS, and sitting there HIGH on the FLOOR all day!)" I THINK that may be in Mick's book as well but I'm not sure of that.
Anyway, whatever the immediate cause, they weren't sending her millions - just enough to get by, + maybe a little extra, which Lindsey basically mis-spent on drugs. Or at least, that's been claimed, by Mick, Stevie, and I believe Lindsey also.

That's what I was driving at in my response to GT about learning disabled nuclear physicists. :)
I agree, Einstein wasn't a nuclear physicist.
( I'm not saying he was LITERALLY learning disabled - he just "thought differently" than most people and that maybe caused him to have trouble in Geometry, to the point where he failed it. Then again, I betcha he had some motivational problems there. ) Anyway, there's highly intelligent people who are "learning disabled." They're two separate, distinct things.

But the difference is that when other people post things they state it as though it is an opinion whereas you have a way of stating your opinion as fact and people take issue with it. It's not what you say, it's how you say it my friend. You often claim to have "insider" information with no real evidence to support it nor do you respond when questioned often times.

The original purpose of this thread was for it to be a place where people could express their "unpopular Stevie opinions" in a fun way without fear of being bashed for them. The person who started the thread made it perfectly clear that the thread was just for opinions. Read the TITLE of the thread -
it even has the word opinion in it. It was a fun thread when it first started,
but IN MY OPINION you guys are now just defeating the purpose of the thread and you have taken ALL the fun out of it. So I give up, you win your little victory, and I hope you're happy for ruining this thread and making it no longer fun. Thank you SO much! :xoxo:

My unpopular opinions...
I don't think there should be a film made about Stevie's life.
I don't want to read her autobiography. I prefer a little mystery.
I don't like the way her visits to the troops have been portrayed, and I disagree with her statement that:
"I first went last summer in the middle of my tour. I was in Washington DC and they invited me and I really had no idea. I just went, Sure, I'm up for anything. I walked in there a fairly happy, single, 57-year old woman with no children - and I walked out a mother and a nurse and a doctor and girlfriend and sister and patients' advocate. From that moment I became a soldiers' advocate because they need it.
I have no comment or opinion about the war itself, but when those guys get back and are horribly injured then that is my business. But really, what can you do?"
is bizarre. If she is so concerned with these guys in hospital, surely she should have an opinion on the war. Her Florence Nightingale thing is a bit warped.

Stevie expressed some of her MOM'S opinions - not her own, her MOM'S - regarding all of this - last summer, in a letter to her fans which appeared on Nicksfix. (A "Journal Entry.") And there was just this EXPLOSION of angry protest, and people really slammed Stevie for it. Look also at the backlash aimed at Helen Hunt, Tim Robbins, and other famous stars who have dared to express an opinion about the war. So she's just simply learned the hard way to lay low and avoid expressing her opinions about this controversial topic. i.m.o.

I've not heard anything about Helen Hunt or anyone else, so was not aware that celebrities were getting slammed. What I find strange and a little off-putting is the way she's getting into this nurse-maid thing.. and further in that same interview:
And you talk to the guys about their experiences.
I walk in and sit down on the bed and say, Move over, and tell me what happened to you. They need to tell you and get it out, and they do. You stay for 15 to 20 minutes, as long as you can, and you become extremely attached. Then I go home, write about it in my journal, and I go back again the next day.
It certainly makes you walk around and think, I have no problems because they have so many. It's going to take so long for many of them to come back to being any sort of normal at all.
I imagine some of these people open up more to you than they do to wives or partners because we often open up more to a stranger.
Absolutely, because I'm more neutral and at first people told me not to mince words, just go in and ask what happened because they need to tell people and it makes them feel better. It's like therapy.
So I sit there with my big eyes, listening and taking it all in. You try not to burst into tears because that's not going to help, so you put this thin plastic seal up where you can listen and discuss and be a sounding board without getting upset because they are so badly injured.
You found that hard the first time?
Very hard. I'd walk into the hallway and cry and then I'd suck it back up and go back, room after room after room. And when you come out they say, and in this room this boy... And in this room this girl ... I started to feel like what it must be like to be a doctor there. The doctors and nurses and techs are astounding. And what the doctors are doing in medical terms is amazing. The best place you could possibly be is at Walter Reed.
Yet despite seeing all this you have no comment on the war? These are the victims.
I can't have an opinion.
Why not?
Because I have to be there for them. And anyway, all the people I have talked to are very upbeat about what they were doing and would turn around and go back [to Iraq]. I've never talked to one soldier who wouldn't go back. They tell me stories about stuff that happened directly to them and you sit there with your mouth open.
If you made a statement against the war ... You would not be welcome there. You'd be Jane Fonda.
Yes. My job is when they get back and are in the hospital, then they are my responsibility. Them lining up and going is not my responsibility. But when they are back, if I can get a little of that mysterious, childlike innocence thing and give that to them, that's what I can do. I didn't have kids and I can look at them as my enormous group of fantastic children.
You also make healing music.
I try.
OK, if she doesn't want to talk about her opinion of the war, she shouldn't, of course. I love Stevie a lot, but this sounds all wierd to me... why is she doing this? They have psychiatrists etc for people suffering from shock and trauma, what is Stevie Nicks doing going in there all childlike and innocent and mysterious.. and writing in her journal about them and telling the media about it??? I find it strange? Is it just me?
Another unpopular Stevie opinion- I dislike the posting of the Journal Entries. I don't read them after I once read a few. It makes me uncomfortable.

It goes back to her old Rhiannon: music as the pain pill, music as the miracle worker.
Stevie has always been (like most of us) very sympathetic to people in pain. So she goes to see these soldiers & brings them music.

k, well, I'm definitely just taking a wild guess here but -
Here's a complete list of all the things Stevie did in order to try to help out soldiers returning home from the Vietnam War, or to protest against the war, from 1965 to 1980 (Rumours Era - walls of fancy hotels knocked out with wrecking balls - hotel rooms painted pink, send the bill to the record company - individual limos - life in the fast lane, sure to make you lose your mind - rememba?) Anyway here's the entire list of everything she did at that time:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
So maybe she's trying to make up for things. And she really does seems like an extremely emotional person, sometimes - so this is just, very simply, her way of trying to help out, and a way to help her feel better about things. She feels very upset about what's been going on in the world, and helping out in this way is her little way of "fighting back."
I absolutely agree with what David said, too - she believes very strongly in the power of music to heal. There's actually some science behind that, too.

No, Stevie, Mick & Lindsey were special guests for the Trojan halftime show at the USC-Arizona State playoff game at the Coliseum. It was October 1980, about three weeks after the Tusk Tour ended at the Hollywood Bowl. That's what that picture is from.

Why wouldn't I? Do you think no one was alive back then or followed the news? Granted she MAY have between, say, 1961 and 1975 but - c'mon, now. Everyone knows she didn't, it's "common knowledge." There were lines on the mirror, lines on her face -

Why is she doing this?? I don't know about you but if were an injured soldier returning from the war in Iraq I would MUCH rather have a visit by Stevie Nicks than a random psychiatrist. I'm sure they have plenty of those on hand anyway. I'm really shocked at your take on it because I truly believe in the healing power of music and especially when you have a kindred soul such as Stevie whom I'm sure many of these people admire. The fact that someone with all her fame, success, and money has taken time out to visit them and spend quality time listening to their stories is very honorable IMO. If I were down, depressed, and physically in bad shape a visit from Stevie Nicks would sure as heck lift my spirits!
I could care less on her opinion of the war to be honest. She is not obligated in any way to share that with us. What she is doing by visiting the soldiers is of such importance and great honor and a true gift to them IMO and that is much more important than her political opinions are to me.

Oh boy. I would love to know where Stevie ever claimed that Lindsey spent all of Jess's money on drugs. (and Mick would have no damn idea, since he wasnt around then) Or even ANY of the money Jess may have given them to help keep them afloat. Stevie actually has said that Jess offered to support them BOTH after her six month dead line...so obviously Jess had respect for Lindsey. Perhaps he knew something about the man that you do not? :(
Oh and Stevie has always done for others, given to charity, held benefit concerts. That did not just start with her "we years" or whatever it was you claimed. She wrote BC in what, 1976 and all proceeds went to charity? Sounds very selfish.

For the love of all that is good in this world......do I think no one was alive back then? Or followed the news? Does this make any sense? Was Stevie's life from 1961 to 1975 common knowledge? Your original post on the Vietnam topic "Here's a complete list of all the things Stevie did in order to try to help out soldiers returning home from the Vietnam War, or to protest against the war, from 1965 to 1980" I simply corrected your timeline. I'm not denying she has a big heart. I just find it strange, that's all. Soldiers kill people, don't they? That's their job. Soldiers are essentially people who are paid to kill other people for their country? Aren't they? Or do you think all these soldiers Stevie met were delivering teddy bears to orphanages when they got wounded?
I feel bad for them. I feel bad for anyone who had witnessed war and is in pain. But are these not men and woman who have picked up guns and invaded another country?
Stevie is clearly a very empathetic, caring person. That's great. I just wonder why she has adopted this cause.

I like your direct description of soldiers..people paid to kill other people. However, not all soldiers are killing. For every soldier carrying a gun at the "front", there are 10 behind the scenes in support functions...stretching all the way back to the US. Most "soldiers" just have a regular job like driving a truck or a cook. Anyway, I get your point.

I have another unpopular opinion. I purchased the Red Rocks DVD and I absolutely hate it! I haven't watched it since.
I couldn't agree with you more, so your opinion isn't completely unpopular! The close-ups, the cheesy special effects, the editing - oh, the horror! I never watch the TITN DVD either.
Didn't KNOW that! K, so that's 5 new songs on the album, that she wrote in, say, one year...
Thrown Down was written around or after The Dance tour, there's a demo from the TISL era. It was 4 new songs that she wrote for SYW, she has said in interviews that she wrote them quickly (within a month or two at most, I believe) because she wanted to give Mac fresh material as opposed to all older stuff. That's why Destiny Rules, Illume, Silver Girl & SYW were dubbed "The Phoenix Four" by Stevie.

UM..Stevie has paved the way and inspired many artists over the years. She only refers to her songs as "her children"..which is certainly understandable! If an interviewer asks her opinion on these chicks who give her credit for her influence..then she can say whatever she wants to.:wavey:

UM..Stevie has said in interviews that she feels that all the newer female artists are like her children, or something to that effect. Something about her trying to teach them & give them advice so they don't make the same mistakes she did. I'll try to find the article to quote.
I can't really think of any "unpopular" opinions that others haven't already mentioned. Well, OK, I think that Stevie poops. I don't think many fans want to think that she does, but she really does poop like the rest of us. :o

I couldn't agree with you more, so your opinion isn't completely unpopular! The close-ups, the cheesy special effects, the editing - oh, the horror! I never watch the TITN DVD either.
There is 1 RTTG demo floating around in fan circles, it is a RAL-era demo. If there are "several" more can you please post them? I love hearing different version of her songs. I think gldstwmn requested this also.

I found one, I know there are more but I can't locate them as of yet. Anyway, here's an example from the Entertainment Weekly Online interview from 5/1/98:
EW: Obviously you have a rapport going with Courtney. But how does it really feel when it's so trendy to worship you all of a sudden? Not that with her it doesn't come from a place of sincerity....
Nicks: Well, it does. Even though I was like her hero for a long time, now I really know her, and she knows me. She's like my wild child. I don't have a whole lot in common with Courtney Love, but I really like her, and I want her to be great. And I know this life is hard, being in this business, so maybe I'm just here to give her advice every once in a while -- "don't make this mistake or this mistake." [Pause, and a laugh.] Like I can tell her, right?

In both instances, she could have very easily relied entirely on her archive of previously-written songs, but she went the extra mile instead.

I think she has always been sympathetic to the men and women in uniform (probably a respect "thing" passed on from her parents), but perhaps being in NYC when the World Trade Center was destroyed affected her further to want to support the people that are trained to protect this country in times of war. I won't pretend to know what Stevie thinks, but it's a logical guess. She was following the news and the people of NYC were hearing far more detailed stories locally then the rest of the country. I would guess it had quite an impact.
Love this thread and I am just adding my unpopular Stevie opinions:
* I think Thrown Down is the best song she wrote in many years, that is to me, since Rooms on Fire (and I think the lyrics are about Lindsey and herself:o )
*I think that some of her songs are cheesy
* The Mick affair irritates me
* I don't get so irritated by the whole "we didn't know cocaine was bad thing". Not that I think it is true, but I believe that she means she didn't know she would lose her mind..On the other hand, I don't buy the "klonopin" thing. As with coke, it was entirely her fault that she became addicted to it and not the doctor's fault.
* I love "Fireflies", almost as much as I love "Dreams".
*I hate her 80's style. The hair, the clothes, the songs (except a couple of them).
*I believe everything she says about not having had any kids. And I believe she has deeply regretted it.
*I absolutely love "Running through the garden", but I dislike the guitar parts (but then again, I 've got the feeling that she's not the one to blame:) ). Sounds too 80's IMO.
*I don't think she "got around" that much. I mean she did, but not more than any other famous 70's rock star. Or else, I don't believe that it is a "feature" strongly connected to her image (as is the case with other female rock stars). And I have a feeling she was pretty much emotional and serious about her relationships.

I agree with you on the Klonopin use. How could Stevie use this drug for eight years before figuring out there was a problem? But, I also blame whatever doctor or psychiatrist that was prescribing this.

Because Klonopin is prescribed as a tranquillizer and/or sleep aid, and Stevie has serious stage fright, & they probably helped with that. Also, Stevie has an addictive personality, she smoked for years & then gave that up, and maybe she was afraid that without the Klonopin she'd go back to the coke?

That's a possibility I haven't thought about..that Stevie used Klonopin as a substitute drug. I don't know enough about how drug treatment centers like Betty Ford work. I thought once someone went through the program, they were "cured" of the addiction. Does anybody know what exactly happens at BF? What is the program?
I don't know how BF works, but I guess that all centers are supposed to teach you how to live without addictions in general. Now as to Klonopin, I think that it is prescribed sometimes to ex-drug addicts, as in Stevie's case.It is an anti-depressant and people who quit drugs are evidently more likely to be depressed. My understanding is that in Stevie's case, the prescription was not the problem to begin with, but she abused the drug and became addicted to it (I think Klonopin is highly addictive and that is why you have to stick to the prescription and not use more than the doctor says- it's like opioids and pain killers, like Vicodin. You get that after an operation for example, but if you start abusing it, you might end up a junky-literally). That is why I am a bit surprised that in interviews she sort of blames the doctor for her addiction, while the doctor did something normal, that is he/she gave Stevie a what I think was a "routine" prescription and it was Stevie who did it wrong by taking dozens of pills more than she was supposed to.

It's actually an anticonvulsant and used to treat seizures and anxiety, is not supposed to be used more than 4 weeks, and is highly addictive if used over 2 weeks. It's used to also treat mood disorders, drug-induced mania and bi-polar disorder.

Hmm, hadnt heard that.
really??  here's a selection of quotes about it from various sources:
"Nicks says the last time she used cocaine on stage was during a concert at Red Rocks in 1986. It was a turning point for her. Afterwards, she went straight to the Betty Ford Clinic. But in attempting to help herself, she encountered a problem far worse than her cocaine problem - a new addiction to prescription drugs. Fresh out a rehab, a psychiatrist put Stevie on a tranquilizer called Klonopin. Generally prescribed for seizures and panic attacks, experts say it should not be taken for more than nine weeks. Stevie says she took it for eight years, learning way too late that Klonopin is highly addictive and can have side effects like depression and weight gain."
------------------------------------------------------------------
Why were you on Klonopin in the first place? Basically, when I got off cocaine I ended up going to a doctor because everyone around me said, "Well, you need to do something to stay off cocaine." Not really understanding that I was off of cocaine. All I had to do was go through Betty Ford one time. And that was it. I have never seen that drug or done it, or been around anybody who has done it since I stopped.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1986, Nicks was treated for cocaine addiction at the Betty Ford Center. Later, Nicks was prescribed Klonopin, a sedative, to counteract her anxiety after ceasing her use of cocaine. This led to another addiction battle that she would not overcome until 1994.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to Nicks' cheerfully frank confessions, you also know that Fleetwood Mac's resident fairy princess kicked the cocaine habit in 1985, only to spend eight debilitating years addicted to Klonopin, the sedative her psychiatrist prescribed to help her stay off the white stuff.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Her departure from the Betty Ford Center in 86, Stevie went to see a psychiatrist, who prescribed Stevie to the drug, Klonopin. He gave her the drug to calm her cravings for cocaine, and Stevie eventually became addicted to Klonopin. Her addiction happened over a slow period of time, but her physical condition worsened, and it was noticable. The drug made Stevie lathargic, and caused her to be tired, and less energetic, which fans could strongly notice.

Yeah, it's not an antidepressant. That's why I get mad at Stevie for condemning antidepressants in the same breath as she talks about her Klonopin addiction. I think she does people a disservice who actually need these meds and can take them without abusing them.
And, I don't know if anyone has said so or not already, but I've tried to wade throught this endless thread and have finally given up without getting even close to the end, but I have to talk about Stevie's journal entries:
First a disclaimer. Stevie's visists to the soldiers are important and valuable and very generous of her. I have no doubt that her feelings for them are genuine and selfless. As with 9-11, she seems to feel others' pain so deeply sometimes. That said:
I find Stevie's journal entries to be so weird lately. If she wants to communicate with her fans, I don't understand why she doesn't just write us an actual letter instead of sharing her journal entries. She has written, at least the last one, in such a self-important way, using the third person to describe her work with the soldiers in such a self-serving, almost mythological manner. I'd prefer that if she wants to bring publicity to the soldiers' plight and draw others into the work she's doing, she tell us how we can donate or get involved ourselves. On another note, I find it weird too that she wants to share with us how much she loved Peter Jennings. lol
Other unpopular opinions:
1. I'd like to see her cut her hair a little shorter so that it would look healthier.
2. I too would like to hear her true opinion on the war in Iraq. There is nothing wrong with being political. I don't understand why she has been afraid to do so.
3. I wish she'd stop relying on the same (but never quite the same) tired stories every time she does an interview. I feel that she's sticking to a script, and I'd like to hear what she REALLY thinks and feels NOW. It would be a shame if she were as stuck in her past as she portrays herself. I'm a romantic, but I'd like it if she had something to talk about BESIDES how she and Lindsey inspire each other, you know?
4. Stevie seemed so unhappy during parts of the SYW tour that I sometimes wonder if I really want to see FM again. I think I could be satisfied with only Stevie solo and Lindsey solo. Even though it was fun to analyze every little moment between S and L, I think I'd rather see her at her best and SYW was not her best. Maybe she was withdrawing to give him the spotlight, or maybe she was too affected by the drama of the tour, who knows, but she was holding back for some reason.
Yikes--Sorry this is so long! I hope y'all can wade through it without falling asleep. :sorry:

I have to say I agree in part and disagree in part. I do find some to be rather "odd" in their wording just as some of the responses to the Ask Stevie are, but I don't think they are fake. Of course she knows they are going to be viewed by anyone that logs on to the site and I'm sure she wouldn't expose anything she doesn't want anyone else to read. As for the dramatics of her writing, I have no doubt she does use those symbols...when I write in a journal, I do - and we all know how dramatic Stevie is so I don't doubt she actually uses them...we've even seen notes, lyric sheets and old poems where she uses such constantly.

yeah. i guess i just feel like she's trying to impress us. she wants us to see her compassion and her sensitivity - and it just comes across as too much to me. we know she is sensitive and compassionate - i don't think she needs to put it out there so blatently. you know, you get the feeling she is being charitable so that she can say, "look, i gave out all these ipods! i am so generous." Yes. You've expressed my thoughts so much more eloquently than I did! I agree that she has written these "journal entries" for the public. If she really writes like this, as if she has an audience, when she is writing for herself in her own journal, then that is even more creepy.

Very interesting...I did not see it like that at all and this was mentioned in another thread. I honestly believe she posted those entries to raise awareness and educate people regarding the brutality of the war (regardless of how she feels about it) and more importantly the soldiers who put their lives on the line for our country. I really do not think Stevie Nicks needs to impress us at this point in her life with her charitable contributions. I believe she knows that her fans who read her journal entries are aware that she is a kind and caring person. I saw this as a completely selfless act and I can't believe people actually think she is posting the journal entries for self gratification purposes. There are plenty of other things she could be doing besides visiting wounded soldiers but she chooses to do this and give of herself. Now that being said Stevie does have a way of sounding self-important (and I'll be the first to admit that) but I honestly think that was not her intent in sharing these with us and if she does come across that way in the journal entries it's anything but their intended meaning. Can't you just look beyond that and see that she may be helping these people and taking them out of a dark place? That's just Stevie, accept her and see the good in what she is doing.
I am personally so glad to have any of her journal entries shared with us. Would you rather have not heard about this at all? It has definitely meant something to me and made me think twice about these soldiers and all they do for us so in my mind the journal entries have served a purpose and I think that was her point. People (like myself) look up to Stevie and reading what she said has definitely given me new perspective on what these men and women have done for us. I didn't look at as "Stevie is writing another self-important journal entry" but rather, "Wow, these men and women have done so much for our country and I'm so thrilled that someone they respect and admire can bring a little joy into their world because Lord knows they deserve it!".

I agree totally - very well said.
I would add that I can see how some would perceive her entries as "Hey, look at me, I'm fabulous and my music is healing..." BUT I think you have to stop and say hey this is Stevie and I don't think she has a selfish bone and has been so removed from "reality" for so long that some things we may perceive as weird or selfish or conceited aren't at all in her intentions.

yeah. i guess i just feel like she's trying to impress us. she wants us to see her compassion and her sensitivity - and it just comes across as too much to me. we know she is sensitive and compassionate - i don't think she needs to put it out there so blatently. you know, you get the feeling she is being charitable so that she can say, "look, i gave out all these ipods! i am so generous." (and truth be told, she sort of acts like A) no one has ever owned an iPod before she started giving them out, and B) that her music alone is the key to their getting better. it feels a little creepy and self-centered to me. i am most often impressed by the people who quietly donate to causes anonymously - who don't seek praise and gratification themselves from it. this is just how she comes across to me in those journal entries.
I AGREE!!!
