It's meant to be a wake up call, to her very egocentric self. To compare yourself with, one who is considered one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century, on public television, is ludicrous, and delusional, IMO. Trust me, the general, non Ledgie public, does NOT consider her one of the great songwriters of all time. If you only knew how many musicians would be laughing their collective asses OFF, at this premise. If you only knew.....:p

Sacred cow
n.
One who is immune from criticism, often unreasonably so.
What did I say that was inappropriate? Christine is Fleetwood Mac's "Sacred Cow", no? No one's allowed to say anything bad about her or to dare say they don't like one of her albums, or to admit that they prefer Lindsey or Stevie (especially if they prefer Stevie). It's ok to slag Stevie, but you better not say a word about Christine.
Stevie's fans get all the grief for that behavior, but some of Christine's fans sure aren't immune to it. Just ask anyone who's dared to post a critical opinion on this particular forum.
I like you, Homer, but you do express some pretty cock-eyed views; damning Stevie's fans for their actions, and then engaging in the very same defensive behavior regarding Christine.
We can't expect something of others that we're not ourselves prepared to give. Disrespect begets disrespect.

This is true, and I think that's largely due to his various mental health issues over the years. Certainly he's put out a lot of uninspired stuff, but people are loath to criticize because they think, "Well, he's been to hell and back, he still needs some time to recover..."

And I think, contrary to popular belief, a large portion of Stevie's own fanbase doesn't necessarily feel that she's the greatest songwriter of all time either, even if she's their preferred songwriter.
All things considered, Stevie's fanbase is probably the most critical overall.
But that doesn't fit into the stereotype that folks like to perpetuate.

I'd have to agree with you.
The reason Stevie is so much more popular than the other two is this:
1. She was considered a sex symbol. (this has nothing to do with music)
2. People (mostly women) but some men...related to her witchy, hippie Janis Joplin like stage presence. (she was excellent at entertaining the crowds). They ate her up, dressed like her, talked like her, danced liked her, started clubs etc etc
Combine these two elements and you have superstardom.
Now having said that, I think she has written some really good music. Is she the greatest of all time? Hell no.. but either is Christine or LB... And quite honestly, I never thought Bob Dylan was all that fantastic either. He wrote some phenominal songs and some really horrible songs. (funny both Stevie and Bob have irritating voices later on in their careers)
It's all pretty subjective...
Now if you want to talk about the best composers, let's go with Jeff Buckley or someone that does more than I V IV. otherwise it's all just radio hits to me.
I'd have to agree with you. And I think, contrary to popular belief, a large portion of Stevie's own fanbase doesn't necessarily feel that she's the greatest songwriter of all time either, even if she's their preferred songwriter.
I think there's also a good contingent of her fanbase (like me and David, for two) who aren't fans of her because we think she's a great songwriter (in any traditional sense, anyway).
All things considered, Stevie's fanbase is probably the most critical overall.
But that doesn't fit into the stereotype that folks like to perpetuate.
It's an interesting dichotomy. Many Stevie fans are at once intensely critical of the songs of hers that they don't like (I don't think you could have a "bizarro survivor" on any of the other forums) but also intensely defensive of the ones they do, and intensely defensive of her personally.
And quite honestly, I never thought Bob Dylan was all that fantastic either. He wrote some phenominal songs and some really horrible songs.
I don't think you'll find any Dylan fans who would claim that the man hasn't written some fantastically awful songs. So it goes when you've been writing and recording for over forty years. But there's simply very little that's better than Dylan at his peak(s), and he's released more of those phenomenal songs than most people could if they had two lifetimes to try.

But there's simply very little that's better than Dylan at his peak(s), and he's released more of those phenomenal songs than most people could if they had two lifetimes to try.
I agree. Dylan in his prime back in the 1960's was the best songwriter ever, by far. If you listen to his albums during those years, there are so many classics & no bad songs at all, in my opinion. He's the only singer I enjoy listening to whose voice I can't stand. ;) Lennon & McCartney are still my favorite songwriters & Christine is my favorite songwriter in Fleetwood Mac, by far.
By the way, this has turned into a most bizarre thread. And, to think it started with Brandon asking about In The Meantime album sales.

We are in the Christine board dear, and I believe that some of your troops *cough* started it first....

Hmmm, if I were doing Beatle/Mac comparisons:
Christine=Paul. Both had the great pop tunes. I could EASILY hear Christine do "Hello, Goodbye."
Lindsey=John. Both had the political/social bent in their music.
Stevie=George. Both had metaphysical themes in their music.

You sure the folks with the emotional maturity issues aren't the ones who get all flustered at the thought some person on an Internet message board saying something negative about a singer they don't even know? That sounds like textbook bully mentality.
"We'll ridicule you and laugh at you, and if you don't say anything in your defense, that gives us a free ticket to just continue doing it. But if you do say anything about it, we'll then throw it back in your face and make it sound like you're being too sensitive, and therefore deserve to be badgered and bullied."
Personally, I would have thought we all left behind the days of "bullies" picking on the "weak kids" back when we each graduated from high school.
So why don't we try to be considerate and respectful, even when it comes to the feelings of "some person on an internet message board"?

I actually started a thread about this in the Rumours forum once and very few people responded. I started thinking that people just didn't think the Beatles were worth comparing to FM or vice versa.
That sounds like textbook bully mentality.

1) This conflation of yourself with Stevie is a little disturbing.
2) That sounds like textbook crybaby mentality. Do you think that bullies continue to pick on people who don't react to them? I very rarely got picked on in grade school because - gasp! - I ignored anybody who did. So the kids who thought they were hot **** very quickly got bored with me. If various chiffonheads didn't get so hot and bothered over any slightly negative comment made about their mystical mistress ("I'm going to write a mean letter to this website because they said Stevie was a jerk!!!!!"), those who make comments just to get a rise out of them very likely would stop doing so.

1) It's apparent that you totally missed my point. I was not commenting on criticisms made towards Stevie, but rather the frequent condescending insults lobbed at Stevie's fans ("chiffonheads," "mindless lemmings," "~*~Wyndchildren~*~," etc.) for being exactly that.... fans.
Some of the stuff said about Stevie would be funny (I do have a sense of humour about her, believe it or not), if it wasn't so often made personal with direct insults to the intelligence and/or emotional stability of her fans... you know, the very real people who post here and who have feelings.
That's when it stops being "fun," and simply becomes immature.
2) Bullies do continue to pick on people who don't react to them. I lived through eight years of harrassment, tauntings and verbal and physical violence in school, and I never once let them see me get upset, or cry, or get angry. In fact, I never let them see me react in any way at all, but that certainly didn't stop their behavior and probably only made it worse, because I didn't stand up for myself.
I'm standing up for others now, and folks can say whatever they want about me... I've been called worse than anything someone here could come up with... but they need to quit making the taunts and insults personal regarding Stevie's fans.
Behind those faceless screennames, they are human beings and deserve to be treated with respect.
It really shouldn't be too much to ask of adults.

I'm not going to get into all this other stuff in this thread. This is the Christine McVie forum afterall. But, I love to talk about a Beatles/Fleetwood Mac connection. I would partially agree with the Chris/Paul comparison, musically at least. But, I'd compare her to George more on a personal basis. They were both classy, private people with very little ego. This place can be very off-putting in that respect, despite the obvious advantage to it because it's usually void of the drama and general nastiness that is rampant in other forums and causes me so much stress. (Well, recently there's been more of that here...but I won't go into that). BUT I don't think that people realize how much they repel other fans who happen to genuinely like more than one member of the band. Sometimes I think some people (that's as vague as it gets, folks!) prefer to ward off those other fans, but I doubt it's actually a conscious effort.

but they need to quit making the taunts and insults personal regarding Stevie's fans.I can't do that, try as I might. But what I try to do is attack mass movements within the various contingents -- I generalize, I practice induction: I observe, say, twenty-two instances of a particular behavior, & then draw a general conclusion that there must be hundreds or even thousands of others who have that same behavior.
All of that, instead of insulting specific individuals here, which is against the FAQ, after all. I'm all for insulting groups over certain characteristics (but not other characteristics). But I leave individuals alone, for the most part.

I can't do that, try as I might.

Is there anybody else around here who is a Fleetwood Mac fan?I am ... or was.
I truly believe that my experience of the band is different from the experience of others because, for so long, I perceived each one as an essential ingredient not necessarily to the band whole but to that very aesthetic experience I was having. I literally believe that I "heard" them differently. Sometimes, I wondered what others "heard."

They began to play "Brown Eyes," but Mick jumped up from his drums and started babbling about the kishka being stolen.
"Yusef!! Bring it back to us!! I need firmly packed meat!!"
Lindsey couldn't take the insanity any longer, brandished nail scissors, and began to cut off his hair for the audience.

The point that people should be respectful of each other is always as good one. But the idea that there are people here who are so sensitive as to be personally upset and hurt when someone uses the term "chiffonhead" is just ridiculous. It's nice that you'd both like to defend the poor and weak, but if such people exist, they need to grow up.It's not just the "chiffonhead" thing, Jyqm. It's all of the ridiculing and belittling. Crack wise all you want, but people shouldn't have to be told to "grow up" and get over being mistreated. Even on a message board.
The Ledge is supposed to be a place where everyone can feel welcomed, and referring to fellow fans as "mindless lemmings" and the "lowest common denominator" is disrespectful.
But I've said all I can say on this subject. It just goes in one ear and out the other, because no one is interested in actually being respectful or considerate. There's just too much glee to be had from making fun of people we feel are beneath us.

I don't agree with the original comment either; I don't think it's fair to Lindsey but that has nothing to do with how I feel about Mary Anne.
It's awkward for me...when people I care about start not merely being critical but just really insulting. I think Lux was just being critical, and that is something I expect on this board.

I loathe drama, which is why Chris' forum USED to be great! The only time this forum was ever great was when you guys posted kicky pictures of Christine throughout her career. The conversation/verbal exchange here has always been on the ... er ... vapid side.
You guys proclaim your distinction from the Stevie forum by ... having polls on favorite songs!! I mean, D'UH!! That doesn't make any sense. You might as well just go to that forum, swap out the name "Stevie" for "Christine," port those posts over here, & you essentially have the same content! No, Dave ... sterner measures are called for ....
If you want to break out of that Stevie self-perpetuating circularity -- & who could blame you? -- you need to be subtle where Stevie fans are overt, sophisticated where Stevie fans are naive, mature where Stevie fans are sophomoric, insightful where Stevie fans are obtuse, wry & waggish where Stevie fans are mundane & literal-minded, pioneers where Stevie fans are hidebound landlubbers, & pragmatists where Stevie fans are dreamers.

I'm safe then. I do the Bran Flakes thing for breakfast. *snicker*
All I can get out of this, is that someone made a joke, and it got bent waaaaay out of proportion, and now we're playing the name game.
In any case, I'll never understand this extreme loyalty thing. If you're a fan of anyone, you can't make little comments about them? I poke fun at Stevie and Chris all the time. Or, there's some choice to be made: Be a fan of one or the other.
??
it's really not a big deal to me. I don't have a duty to these people, nor do they have one to me.

I do think there is a comparison between Christine and Paul McCartney. I think Christine is a poor man's Paul McCartney. She would therefore obviously be appreciated by those whose tastes could only appreciate poor man's quality. It goes without saying that Lindsey and Stevie are above any kind of comparison (they are their own entities) but I think you'll have to agree with my first observation there.
Incidently, do not disagree with me here. It is outride rude to disagree with my comments. I will roll my eyes at you. As Christine fans, you should know well that you appreciate a poor man's version and this is no cause for comment or rebuttal, to do so would be way out of line.:laugh::laugh:
I still hope you're being facetious with that first part though.

I'm a multicellular individual, you're way out of proportion. We've got the hemodynamic connection, so don't call me germ!

What the hell's a kishka? If I've got it, you can have it back!A kishka is a little ... it's a little edible thing made of tasty stuff & encased in a ... well, a casing that is traditionally made of intestinal lining or something but is more often than not these days made of vegetable matter.
Haven't you ever been to a deli, Homer? Do they even have any delis in Indiana?

Ah, yes. We'd all have to wear Stevie's granny flak jackets and think about velvet fountains & wild roses & gypsy sisters & the pros and cons of Reeblechs vs. boots.
do i get kishka?

There's one in Indy, Shapiros, that's like 100 years old. I've been there once.
This is the land of corn fed Protestants. 'Course, I'm not much into corn, or religion. Now meat loaf, there's something I know about all too well.
