I was stating that none of us know for sure how we will react to a given situation until it actually happens and then provided a hypothetical example to show what I meant. Pure and simple.
Of course, that's the case. Absolutely.

I think it always best to be realistic and own up to the truth. For example, I think christianity is evil and vile, and I have no problems with whatever anyone thinks about that. So, I think that those in favor of the death penalty should just admit that it is a punishment that is exacted strictly for vengeful purposes and get over it.

on the death penalty (Excluding Tim McVeigh who got what he deserved, Though he should have had a handgrenade stuck up his ass and the pin pulled instead of getting the painless sleep/death) can be summed up in the following bumper sticker:

If murder is such an atrocity, how can the correct response to it be to murder someone? It's not logical and by this thinking would actually take away the atrocity in the original crime. I would tend to think that if one were truly appalled by the crime of murder, regardless of personal circumstances, just the act of murder, they wouldn't be inclined to want to murder someone in return.I just wanted take much-needed time away from my studies to say that your post is very well put and I totally agree.

Because death penalty advocates don't believe that the death penalty is murder- they believe that it is government sanctioned punishment. Saying that somehow the lawful act of ending one's life against their will is somehow morally better than the unlawful act of ending one's life against their will is ridiculous.

But death penalty advocates will never get it, because revenge is a powerful emotion that somehow endures its possessor with arrogance, certaintude, and a disregard for anything outside one's own view.

Aaahhh yes, traits with which you must be very familiar.

My familiarity with those particular traits has only come from dealing with people who possess them.

The only thing I'm certain of is that I don't know everything. Which why I'm against the death penalty.

The only thing I'm certain of is that I don't know everything. Which why I'm against the death penalty.Which, in my opinion is one very good reason to be against it. With that realization comes the one that no one knows everything.

The death penalty is the easy way out. Someone like Susan Smith or that other moron who killed her five children should really just rot in jail forever. I also feel that they should be given total hysterectomy's without the benefit of anesthesia. Maybe every once in a while Susan can be submerged in water up until the point of drowning.

As far as religon I am not a believer. MOST (not all) Christians select what they want to believe out of the bible and dismiss the rest. Leviticus is in there. Religon has been the source of conflicts over the years and continues to promote bigotry and hatred. Whether you believe that or not just look at the current administration and their agendas and their reasoning behind them. Also didn't the Pope just weeze out his condemnation of homosexuality and gay marraige? Like he should be the authority.

Right, well that's logical. So......you do support the death penalty (and the hysterectomy penalty)? A crime for a crime? We should rape the rapists because lord knows that makes the victims ordeal go away.

No punishment will ever make the victim's ordeal go away. But then, that isn't the point of punishment, is it? If it were, we wouldn't even bother catching criminals and putting them on trial. What's the point of locking them up? That won't make the ordeal go away either.

On a side note (and this isn't necessarily directed at you, Lux. I just don't feel like putting this on a seperate reply):

There is something I don't understand about some people's arguments against the death penalty. They say it is "the easy way out" and that life in prison is far worse. Then some go on to talk about how some innocents have been put to death and just how awful that is (which I agree it is awful, but then there will always be innocent people who are convicted of crimes. As I've said before, our legal system isn't perfect).

Ok. So let me get this straight, we shouldn't put anybody to death because we can't know for sure that they are guilty and it would be murder to do so. So let's lock them away for the rest of their lives (which is worse than death) so that innocents don't die.

It's wrong to kill so lets give them a punishment that is worse than death. That just doesn't make sense.

That sentence need not be final. Even if it's twenty years later, the innocent can be given proper representation.

Most people spend at least that long on death row anyway. Let's not forget that when a person is sentenced to death, it's not like the sentence is carried out immediately. First the case goes through a series of appeals. Hell, more people probably die awaiting execution than are actually put to death.

I used to support the death penalty but once your dead your dead, I feel it should fester in your mind what you actually did. There is a case that just happened here on Long Island where a woman was killed by her boyfriend. Should he be put to death, absolutely not. He should rot in jail for the rest of his sorry ass life. Her family has to live with the fact that she no longer walks the earth because of him. Will it bring back the woman? Please. That's not the point.

And yes if a rapist is truely convicted, sure sodomize the bastard with a baseball bat. This way he knows exactly how that woman felt when he decided to degrade her soul and being. Color me crazy but I don't think a woman finds it pleasurable to be forced and humitiated into an act of pure violence.

I believe in letting the punishment fit the crime. But as far as the actual death penalty...I dont think anyone should be put to death for killing someone or people in general. If they took away their lives then the government should take away their freedom and put them behind bars for life. They robbed the person they murdered of their lives so they should have their freedom taken away. Eye for an eye. I speak from personal experiences that happened about 2 years ago. A woman killed my uncle and I was the one who found him and whatnot. Sorry but I dont like talking about it even to this day. I had to be the one to have that image imprinted in my mind forever. My dad (his brother is the deceased) wanted her to fry in the electric chair but I on the other hand said that she needed to get life in prison without the possibility of parole. June of 2004 I went to her trial, testified (had to relive that horrible day over again) and she got life in prison without parole. So I feel like...she robbed my uncle of his life...so in return she got her freedom taken away. Sorry to go on and on about this but I had this story to share and it is on topic with everything in this thread. So I do not believe in the death penalty no matter how bad the crime was or is.

I don't think that excuses putting poorly represented people on death row. If it takes 60 years before they're executed, that's too soon.

I think they should just rot in a cell with their guilty conscience if they ever had a conscience to begin with.

I'm really sorry you experienced this. :( Thank you for sharing your story. I am of the same opinion but have not had the same experience and no one should. I hope that you and your Dad have found some peace.

Im sorry your confused Lux but how do you equate what I posted with "the same as saying kill the killers" ? With crime there is the victim and the perpetrator. The victim doesnt want to be the victim but the perpetrator knows fully what he/she is doing. A friend of mine was raped, she got the **** knocked out of her and her hair was cut the **** off. The scumbag was never caught. Im sorry but my "bizarre reasoning" does not have to be justified to anyone.
