between the demo and the product of a FM song. In other words, why do I always like the demo more?

I've got to the point where I despise the word "demo," although I like some demos very much. |

I think I like a lot of the "demonstration models of newly written songs" (
), esp. from the 1970's, because her voice just soars a la the Rhiannon demos, No Light (POTU), etc. Also, I found the demonstration model of the song TISL more compelling than the finished product (which I liked very much). I think perhaps, as La Crowe said about producing SN songs for TISL and Practical Magic, something sometimes gets lost on the road to the final product. Of course, I think the demostration models of Running Through the Garden and Smile at You pale in comparison to the finished product (I am ducking and cowering in anticipation of the flames for that statement ). So, I guess it really just depends. |

in the cases where i liked the demo more than the official version, it has been because i heard the demo first, and grew accustomed to it and its idiosyncrasies. then, in anticipation of hearing the "real" version, i expected everything i liked about the demo would be increased, and bits of it i didn't like would be decreased. and what i thought was good/bad wasn't always what lindsey thought was good/bad. so i think it's the small, changing details that determine if one likes a demo more than an official version, and also the inevitable sense of expection that comes with awaiting the finished version. (forgive me for waxing philosophical here).
of course, my theory crumbles for those who heard the final version first and still like the demo better! |
