Anyone have any idea what a mirror in the sky is? I know Stevie goes for some cryptic lyrics sometimes, but this song to me is pretty obvious except for that one line!

Knowing Stevie's themes, it could be her guardian angel --- or, more likely, it's the moon that she's always loving, praising, & identifying as herself.

I think it is a metaphor for herself. I think she was looking at Aspen mountain and imagining it is a big mirror into which she asked her reflection "What is love, can the child within my heart rise above, can I sail through the changing ocean tides (or o'times as published in some places), can I handle the season of my life." She then answers "I don't know" apparently because she has been afraid of changing because she built her life around someone (probably LB). That is my take. I am sure there will be others.

Yes, I basically take it a kind of heavenly appeal, and she's asking if she's strong enough to make it through the bad time Lindsey and she were having in the music industry (as I recall, she said 1974 was her/their worst year). As for her choice of wording it this way...well, that's Stevie.

Clouds with silver linings . . . The light of the silvery moon . . . things that reflect light, like mirrors in the sky maybe. Stevie does love to play with words. I wonder if it was dark or light when she was looking at that sky. "I don't know." IF she was speaking metaphoricly, you know, like, The sky is like a mirror," then she might be doing a little Snow White, "Mirror, mirror on the wall." Kind of funny. Later in life she did have a song called "Mirror, Mirror," along with her album, "The Other Side Of The Mirror," and her song "Alice," partially referring to her Grandmother Alice, and certainly about the one in wonderland. ![]() She definitely has an affinity to childhood stories. Alice Through The Looking Glass, and maybe Snow White. Wouldn't suprise me. Stevie's just a cool lady. I've always gotten a kick out of her. Last edited by Tango; 03-28-2003 at 10:59 PM.. |

Stevie is more a poet than a rock song writer. If one looks at her in this light her lyrics are not difficult to understand. It always pisses me off to read another review where the writer wonders out loud about the "cryptic" meaning behind her lyrics.
She was gazing out at the snow capped rockies, which are like a "mirror in the sky", she could "see my reflection in the snow covered hills till the landslide brought me down", meaning she watched her reflection or herself crumble and fall down the mountain. It's about realizing that time is a fleeting thing as is youth and hers too is moving with the rhythm of life and will fade.

I have often thought that there are a lot of veiled references to drug use in Stevie's songs because it was such a part of her life then. Given that this song was written over the holidays in Aspen is sure the party was in full force. So who knows? |

There are MANY MANY MANY songs where stevie was probably just high. But Landslide is not one of them. This song makes all the sense in the world, and has very sober lyrics.

I think it is a metaphor for reflection or contemplation. A lot of people "look to the sky" when they are making decisons or trying to figure something out in their heads.
I never really thought about it until you brought it up. Thanks. Joe |
