AC DC has really climbed these charts lately
The Eagles only act to have 2 albums in the top 10
Rumours is actually tied with Shania Twain UNBELIEVABLE
Cannot believe Hootie and The Blowfish are on this list let alone ahead of Rumours.
Hotel California may have been knocked from the #1 spot by Rumours in 1977 but it continues to sell more today

Can't believe either about Hootie's album. Actually it's thru this post that I learned it was that succesful. I had to listening to it again to remember, and I recognized just Only Wanna Be With You. But in general it is good music, very 90s, though I seriously doubt it is within a worldwide top 10 list, and definitely it is far from Rumours.

Over half of the list is 70s's music which confirms my opinion the best music is from that decade. 1 more album is borderline 70's and released in 1980. 2 other albums reveal how big country music is in the United States.

Hootie was huge in the states in the late 90s with one album. They played sold out venues the entire year. But I never thought it was that successful to beat Rumours. Hootie got flamed by music critics of sounding like a lounge cover act. They had other hits from the album instead of I Only Want To Be With You.

Motley Crue released an album that debuted at #2 and was beat by Garth Brooks #1. I will never forget Nicki Six saying "Who the F*** is Garth Brooks?" Unless you were into country no one knew who he was.

Back In Black is the ultimate rock party album. We mostly listened to FM and the Eagles in high school, and drank beer. When someone put on BiB, it was full fukcing PARTY ON, GARTH. Out came the whiskey with BiB. That album makes you want to rock out with your cock out.

I suppose "best" can be defined from different points of view. I've often read that the best music was the 60s'. In fact, I do think it marked a turning point, it was revolutionary, there was a counterculture movement, etc. So it’s easy to say that decade gave us the best music. I have read several articles that say so; one of them even defined the 70s music as decadent compared to the 60s’ and the only good song was Stairway to Heaven. I found that really unfair, but it reflects how subjective the "experts" can be.

And best-selling album charts can't define, IMHO, the best music of a decade. They only define successful bands or singers, whether they had long-term or fleeting success. The business model of the 1960s was very different. Furthermore, if we were to measure it by tours, Wikipedia only lists tours from the 1980s onward. There are no official or tracked box office revenue records for 60s tours because the modern multi-million dollar touring industry did not yet exist, and the concept of a "lucrative stadium tour" was not a standard business model, or so I read.

Anyway my point is I don't believe 100% what experts write in magazines. But also I don’t think numbers can’t define the best music either. Now, if you asked me which decade had the best music for me, I wouldn't answer the 60s or the 70s (without belittling them at all, cause there several 70s albums that are my favorites). But yes, my answer would be completely subjective. It's based on my youth best times.

P.S. I do know who Garth Brooks is, but I guess it is just because I like to read about music. Cause if you ask me which of his songs I know, I admit my answer is none. And until now, that I have to look for it, I had no idea who Nikki Sixx is.

P.S. 2. I agree with those who say GH albums shouldn' be included in the same top selling albums list.

Just like BiB may only have reached #4 in the US, Dark Side of the Moon only ever peaked at #2 in the UK. It’s the 7th highest selling album of all time in the UK and is 16x platinum. It’s one of the most revered of albums, often ranked as THE BEST album of all time, but only ever got to 2.
Mind you, The Wall only peaked at 3 as well.

Which is why I say all the time chart position means nothing. Its weeks on chart and copies sold that matters. Chart position is just bragging rights. The same with the Grammy awards. Some of the crappiest songs won Grammys. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon is revered on this side of the pond too. It stayed on the Billboard hot 100 charts for well over a decade. Tusk only peaked at #4 in the states and was considered a flop by many. However its global sales have eclipsed Mirage sales which was a #1 album in the States.

I think there should be a recount. Behind the Mask went to #1 in the UK and Greece yet its nowhere to be found.

I am shocked that Street Angel and the Other Side of The Mirror is not on these lists

Partially agree, and you mentioned they key factor: age. My parents would never say the best music was the 70s or 80s. Nor my niece.

So I do agree 100% with your previous post where you mentioned high school, drank beer, party on, whiskey, rock out and… etc. That shapes a lot on what you later remember as the best music. I experienced that mostly throughout the entire '80s (including 1987 ).

Well, I experienced all of that except for the cock out thing (if the meaning is literal ). Or at least that's what I remember.
