Thumbs up 1987 interview

I cannot recall if I ever heard this before. This interview was press immediately after Lindsey quit the band. There are some interesting things on it. I think Stevie says the day that Lindsey quit the band the rest of the band went out to eat with Rick and Billy and asked them to join. How could it have happened that fast? I know they were hired fast but was not it a few days later? Anyone know if Stevie is right?
Chris talks about her family and her dad marrying someone her age. I always thought Isn't It Midnight was about Eddy. He is from Portugal and that would explain it being midnight on the other side of the world. But in this interview she was married to Eddy already. They were in love in 1984 and married in 1985. Chris states the song was about someone far away that did not work out. This would mean it was before 1984 when she was in love with Eddy. But who knows. Perhaps she did not want anyone to know it was about Eddy. Stevie talks Seven Wonders. Apparently she changed more than just a few words on lines. Stevie says she was given the song but in the studio singing it for the first time Sandy had not given her the lyric sheet. Stevie sang the song off memory ad libbing her way through the song. When she got back out of rehab she got the lyric sheet and she sang the song correctly many times. However her first original vocal was the best one so they kept it even though she butchered the song with her own poetry. Has anyone ever seen the real and original lyrics to Seven Wonders?
Lindsey sounds happy

The dinner didn't happen the same day, according to Mick:

We sat around for a bit after Lindsey had left. "It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out this was gonna happen," John McVie said.

"We've got a great record," I reminded them, "and we're gonna look like a lot of bloody idiots if we don't go on the road. Let's keep our momentum and use it to find new people."

It so happened that a few days later I was booked to have dinner with Billy Burnette, from the Zoo, and his friend Rick Vito, one of the best lead guitar players in town. I was planning to invite them to meet with John and Chris. When Stevie heard where I was going, she asked if she could come along. (She and Billy had recorded an unreleased version of Red Sovine's "Are You Mine" together during the Rock a Little sessions.)

During that dinner, Fleetwood Mac was reborn.

I had actually thought of asking Billy Burnette to join Fleetwood Mac the instant Lindsey left the room that afternoon. Billy was a skilled writer who had done seven solo albums and had written both R&B and country material for Loretta Lynn, Irma Thomas, Levon Helm, Conway Twitty, and others. Billy was a good singer with real presence, but we also needed a world-class lead guitar, which is where Rick Vito came in.

Mick also wrote there were no auditions, so the decision could have been made at that dinner.

As usual, there were no auditions. As always, Fleetwood Mac hired musicians on intuition and instinct. That night I asked Billy and Rick if they wanted to join the band. They both said they'd think about it, but the answer was yes.

Yeah I thought so. You always have to take what Stevie says with a grain of salt.

Found this clip of Toronto 1987 when Little Lies was racing up the charts. Includes songs like HAEWAFY, Brown Eyes and Over My Head. Chris sings Songbird in a big black hat with that blue dress and 80s hoop earrings. Everyone is so young.

Yes. At first, I assumed she hadn't slept from August 7th until the day of the dinner, and she thought all those hours belonged to the same day. But since it was already the Klonopin Days, the most logical theory is that she simply erased all the intervening days from her memory.

Yeah you are right.

BTW, Is it me or is that the most dingbat comment for Stevie to make to the audience in Toronto. "Thank you for inviting us to your country." You would have thought they were playing Sudan or something.

Yeah you are probably right. However the song (IIM) was written about this time so if its not about Eddy would love to know who this guy was.

That date is also stated on her wiki page. And Tango page says the album was recorded November 1985 – March 1987. So IIM could be about Ed if it was written early or before those days, but yes who knows. I remember in the Classic Albums Rumours video she said Songbird was about everybody and nobody, and that she doesn't write songs like Stevie, and that she wasn't well organized, if she got a spare bit of paper, she jot lyrics down, and keep them. I understood her songs aren't always about real or exact things; she could be a storyteller sometimes or the lyrics meaning may not be exact or accurate.

About 7Wonders, it's very unlikely that anything Stevie said then or now is reliable. I don't think Stevie remembers those days very well. Besides, we often find contradictions in her stories. But whatever the case, I really like the song. In fact, the only Tango songs I don't like are Caroline and Whattamattababy (the song starts well, but when she gets stuck with the whattamatta lyric, she ruins it).

I do agree what you said about Stevie but I do find her Seven Wonders commentary very spot on for her. She cannot even remember the lyrics to her own songs and when you hear demos or different versions the lyrics always are changed. We do know the band went with the original (pre-rehab) vocal. But Stevie tells why. She sang it many more times with the lyrics sheet but even though the lyrics were right the passion of the original vocal was gone. So they opted for her random lyrics in the song. She has often said she is sort of a one trick pony in the studio and her first vocal is always the best. She would hate producers that kept doing it over trying to make it better. This is the reason she did not like working with Kenny Loggins. He kept making her do the vocal over and over.

It's always lovely to hear Christine talk about her family. I'm from the English midlands myself so always felt a bit of an affinity for her. She used to play in her first band, Sounds of Blue in a pub just up the road from me in Stourbridge, my home town (before my time, though!).

I found this quirky little newspaper article about her mother, Beatrice and her supposed abilities in the Birmingham Daily Gazette of 2 January 1954. Sorry if it's difficult to read.

I think the paragraph in the last column says "She claims to have cured her sister of leukemia (a disease of the blood cells) after doctors have said there was no hope"

In his book, Mick introduces each member with a short bio. This is what she wrote about Christine's parents; he mentions a similar story.

Christine was from Birmingham, born in the war years like my sisters. Her father, Cyril Perfect, was a university professor and musician whose own father had played the organ at Westminster Abbey. Her mother, Beatrice (she was known as Tee), was a frustrated musician, but then she had a different sort of touch. Chris's mum was a psychic and healer. She could heal warts overnight with the touch of a finger. Once when a dear old friend of Cyril Perfect's was diagnosed with leukemia, Tee wore white kid gloves to bed for a few nights and the friend was cured. Chris grew up thinking it weird that her mother went ghost-hunting with the local psychic research society. Chris would ask, "Why can't you be an ordinary mum?" And her mother would just smile to herself.
