All photos tell a story. Some more than others. This photo has always been one of my all time favorite photos. You can tell it was spontaneously taken at Stevie's house. Look at all the details in this photo.
Dave Stewart is sitting on what may be Stevie's bed. We know they spent the night together at least once. Was this the night that inspired "Don't Come Around Here No More" came from? Dave's eyes tell a story. He loved acid. Was he just coked out or was he tripping in this photo? Stevie looks a bit tired as its time to go to bed so maybe its morning? Look at those drapes. Very fancy and elegant for the early 1980s. We know Stevie likes nice things. Notice that one window has the drapes closed. We know Stevie likes to keep out the light. The photo on the wall looks like a sketch of an Asian woman. Did Stevie do this? It looks a little like Sister Honey. Was this the inspiration for Sister Honey? Why is there a typewriter in the middle of the bed? Is that a stuffed animal or her dog on the typewriter. I can never tell. Is that book on the bed her journal? Who folded those towels and put them on the corner of the bed? Look how Dave is dressed? His hair teased and he has this tacky spikey leather stuff on. Its amazing that Stevie found this guy attractive enough to bring home. His story is he just chilled in her bed while her and her backup singers giggled all night in the bathroom. Who took the photo? Sharon? Stevie's expression is fascinating. She is not posing and caught off guard of the photo. Dave is clearly aware the photo is coming. There is a fan on the floor. Was Stevie twirling and dancing in front of the fan? If this is Stevie's bedroom, I am just fascinated if these walls could talk. Lastly, I swear my sister had the same bedspread in the 1980s. We shopped at JC Penney though ![]() Did I miss anything?

I can't tell what´s on the typewriter either. If it's a dog it seems it went thru the telepod of The Fly movie.
![]() And sorry guys but after a serious and deep analysis, my theory is that the fan is on the floor and pointing in that direction so as not to spill the coke on the bedside table. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Your explanation for that fan is the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time! Makes perfect sense, too. I was thinking maybe it was just hot in the room, but I like your reasoning better! It looks like a real dog on the typewriter to me. And Stevie doesn’t look surprised to me. I’m guessing it was her best friend Christine who took the picture. They were probably up most of the night just having one of their girl talks. |

Are we sure this is Stevie's bedroom? The decor looks more like a hotel. Those drapes are awful.
Than again, this could be a photo of the infamous Nicks/Stewart one night stand. Is this the night in question? |

I am fascinated why a typewriter is on the bed. Was the photo more about what is staged on the bed rather than the two of them? It almost seems like that since its the center of the photo. Yet again people on drugs do crazy things that you cant explain and you tend to find disarray and odd things placed around the room. As far as the drapes, it was the early 80s. I bet in 1983 those drapes were the bomb. We may never know the truth about the photo but photos reveal clues about time and location. According to Stewart, they met backstage on an Eurythmics on their 1984 tour. He did not know who she was but she was backstage and met him. The Eurythmics played LA 04/25/84 and 04/28/84. Dave's outfit is another clue. It looks like something he would wear on stage. It really could be the night they spent together when Joe Walsh showed up. Stevie and Joe would have been broken up just a few months before the meeting.

By late April of 1984, she would have been home in Los Angeles with plenty of free time. Perhaps she was beginning the writing/demo sessions for the ill-fated "Mirror Mirror" album that would eventually be scrapped. Maybe also around the time that "Don't Come Around Here No More" was written. |

If this was the night or morning the photo was taken, he played San Fransisco the following night. He stayed up all night after the Grammy's and then got to San Francisco for that performance? Maybe he caught a cat nap later that afternoon. Rock stars had the craziest life back then. Here is the LA Grammy performance from that night. Notice the pants and his beard and goatee is the same length. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIYLJat5RjI The song Dont Come Around Here No More must have been written really fast. Stevie and Jimmy argue about the song in front of Dave and Stevie throws in his face that he slept with Dave the other night LOL. However Dave says Stevie was having a party at her house that night. That would make sense to have a post Grammy Award party. He said he was still in leather gear and sweaty. Those pants are leather gear. From Dave: As Stewart recalls it, Nicks had just broken up with Joe Walsh — and after Stewart made his interest known, she invited him to a party at her house, where he soon ended up "in full sweaty leather stage gear." Eventually breaking away from the festivities, Stewart ended up wandering around Nicks' home until the wee hours of the morning, at which point he found an empty bedroom and fell asleep. "I woke up at about 5AM to the sound of doors rustling open and in the half-light saw Stevie opening and closing closets, as if it was the middle of the afternoon," wrote Stewart. "Stevie went back in the bathroom and about an hour later came out in a long Victorian *nightdress and quietly slipped into the other side of the bed. Stevie is an incredibly talented, soulful and *beautiful woman. There was a fair amount of what I'd call skirmishing that went on. I remember at one point actually falling backward out of bed onto the floor, which made us both laugh hysterically." After their encounter, Stewart received an invitation stay at the home of producer Jimmy Iovine — who, unknown to him, had also been in a long relationship with Nicks. Stewart played Iovine the demo for his song "Don't Come Around Here No More," and Iovine — who was producing Nicks' next record at the time — suggested bringing it to her. Even though Stewart didn't know it, Iovine's time on the project would shortly come to a close, and the song would ultimately end up with a different artist — who'd turn it into one of his own biggest hits. Right away, Stewart recalled noticing friction between Nicks and Iovine, which reached a head when Iovine suggested that Nicks change the lyrics she'd come up with for "Don't Come Around Here No More." "Stevie was upset and the discussion became very tense. He was saying, 'Can you stop arguing with me in front of my friend David? You don't really know him.' And she said, 'Your friend? What are you talking about? We slept together the other night.' I turned white and stared at the floor, *wondering what was coming next," wrote Stewart. "I thought Jimmy was going to ask, 'What does that mean?' But he just said, 'I know what we should do. We should get Tom Petty down here to finish writing the song with you. He's great.'"

I agree they look rough, but probably because they were up all night and haven’t gone to bed yet. Clearly, judging from the towels on the bed, Stevie had been doing laundry LOL.

Chance timing in life is everything. If Stevie had not been nominated for a Grammy perhaps she may have never been at the show and never met Dave. If she never met Dave then Tom would have never gotten his song.
One premonition about Dave's story is we get an early glimpse of Jimmy running out of patience with Stevie. RAL or MM was just in the early days and they were already fighting. The story is so bizarre that I am glad Dave spilled the beans about it. Her marrying Kim one year prior is another out of this world story. Her life was crazy yet really exciting in those days. It soon was going to catch up to her. I did hear Stevie say once that she was pretty much insane during this time. She started to isolate herself from her parents because of how crazy she was. I wonder if that is the reason her dad came off the road early on the Wild Heart tour. The following year she would have that incident backstage at the Wham concert and then tagged along on the west coast stops on Heart's 1985 tour. She was everywhere but out of the limelight.

Thats why I love this photo. Its spontaneous and gives a real glimpse into her life at that time. The bed has such an odd array of items. Drug dens usually do though. Its funny because whoever took the photo could have said, stand by the window or they could have posed somewhere. But someone came barging in with a camera. If these people did not have money and fame they would be committed. "She came out of the bathroom at 5 am in a Victorian gown and slipped into bed beside me." Maybe that's what the fan was for. She was reenacting her 1983 Civil War Stand Back video.

Yes I have been in several drug dens. People constantly high on drugs have the oddest items sporadically placed all over the place. This is why I love the photo so much. Its not a sugar coated Herbert posed photo that gave many of us a fake portrait of who she was. If I went through a million dollars of blow in my house, you would not call my place a drug den? You need a reality check. How dare you say you work in substance abuse. A million dollars of blow by today's standards is a lot. Just imagine how much you could get in 1983 prior to the War on Drugs. Paul Fishkin 1999 Behind The Music: Near overdoses on the road. Joe Walsh: One of us will die if we dont break up because of drug abuse. What do you call a place where people are constantly high, stay up all night, and large amounts of coke is stored? You are biased because she is a celebrity and your favorite singer. Anyone else with the same circumstances its called a drug den.

Let’s try to be completely objective with regards to this picture. First, look up the definition of a drug den. Now tell me what you see in this picture that makes you say it’s a drug den? What you are doing is referencing past interviews and applying it to this picture. Because Stevie and several other people have said she spent millions on coke, and for many years, of course we can say she was a drug addict. But objectively speaking, forget what you know and just look at the picture with new eyes- again, what do you see that makes you say it’s a drug den? Where are the used needles? The powdered substances? Other people lying passed out? Anyone lying passed out, for that matter? I’m not saying Stevie didn’t do drugs, or Dave didn’t. I’m sure they did. But it’s a picture of a bedroom, not a drug den, that’s all. And your insistence on calling it a drug den is funny to me. |
