As I listen to some Kitty Wells, I'm wondering what Stevie thought/thinks of her. The timeline is right for her grandfather to have had her 45's. I don't think Kitty was an influence with Stevie's phrasing, BUT, had Stevie heard Kitty early on, I can't imagine her not thinking "I can sing like her".

Stevie definitely had some country influences, at least in the beginning. That's Alright and After the Glitter Fades sound very country to me. I was actually listening to some of her live Fritz performances the other day and her voice sounds very country. She still had that country twang to her voice with Buckingham Nicks and to some extent The White Album. By Rumours, I think her voice started to change and that twangy effect sort of disappeared. It would be interesting to find out who some of her favorite country artists are though.

She must have liked Waylon Jennings since she wrote Leather and Lace for him and his wife to sing..even though she took it back
She also praised Mary Chapin-Carpenter in a Street Angel era interview but Mary was big then so it may have been more of a flavor of the week thing.

Ooh I just remembered that I Still Miss Someone is a Johnny Cash cover. I guess our girl also loves The Man in Black.

I must say as a whole, I really don't like country music, period. But, when Stevie does country, I almost always like it. Rose Garden, After The Glitter Fades, That's Alright, Maybe Love, the list goes on and on.... I love all those songs. I think she pulls the whole "country'' thing off really well!
