On the Mirage Deluxe edition, they have that track called Suma's Walk (Can't Go Back) which I assume is the full instrumentals for the song? Or like some demo or something? Anyways, that sounds like exactly what Stevie sings along to in the Wild Heart Rolling Stone video. So I assume she got amongst the tapes from France I guess before Lindsey added the lyrics and everything to the song.
It makes me wonder if she used it in a way when she was writing Wild Heart. And is it just me who finds that part of the song SO PRETTY? When I first heard the song I didn't like it that much but that opening melody (what would you call it? a hook? I'm not really educated on musical terminology), the la-la-la-la-la, daaa daaaa daaaa daaaaa, bit. It stayed ringing in my head for a while after I heard it so I was so thrilled when they put this on the album because I didn't like the song Can't Go Back that much in general. But that melody thing is one of the best things he ever wrote imo. |

It's a different version of the track Stevie is singing along to in the Wild Heart video. It's shorter and there are a few more extra notes. And I believe it's a different type of guitar.
Often times songwriters will hear a melody and come up with words. Then they'll later come up with other music to set those words to so they don't steal the melody of the original bit of music. Stevie is famous for talking about how this happened with Little Red Corvette. She came up with the lyrics to Stand Back while singing over Little Red Corvette then had a new song made out of it. When you're in a band the band members often contribute music with the idea that the songwriters will come up for lyrics for them. Lindsey's Suma's Walk riff was on a tape of song meant for Mirage. He obviously worked it into what we now know as Can't Go Back but at some point Stevie had come up with her Wild Heart chorus while listening to it. Who know, it could have become her song. There's a recording out there of Stevie and Lindsey vamping over an instrumental, with Lindsey doing the bum bum bum part of Eyes of the World and Stevie singing the woah woah woah I hope you make it part of Enchanted. This is a perfect example of a piece of music that inspires two totally different songs. If you listen to Eyes and Enchanted back to back you'll see they're very similar and that's because they both came out of the same jam. |
