Counting down Petty's 20 biggest smashes with the Heartbreakers and beyond

In the brand new Billboard cover story, the venerable Tom Petty discusses the passion, outrage and drive that birthed "Hypnotic Eye," his latest studio album and 13th with the Heartbreakers. It's a highly politicized album that he says recalls his earlier, more aggressive sound. Speaking of that early sound, Petty has been enjoying success on Billboard's charts -- the Hot 100, in particular -- since the mid 1970s. To mark the occasion, Billboard's chart historians dug deep into Petty's extensive catalog to come up with his 20 biggest hits, including his work with the Heartbreakers, on his own and with one very famous collaborator. Speaking of which, you may be surprised to hear which Petty-penned song made it to number one.

Legend: This chart is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, certain eras are weighted differently to account for chart turnover rates over various periods.

Weird~The songs I like the least are the highest in the charts...with the exception of SDMHA, of course.

I was surprised by how few of his songs made the top 10 on the Hot 100. Runnin down A Dream only made it to 23?? Weird.

I know! I feel the same way with FWM songs. Dreams was their only #1?! That just shows you how great the music was back when music was real. Needles and Pins was that high? Never would have thought. They really should have done an album together. I wish she was part of the Traveling Wilburys
