Default Edge of Seventeen is really gold but will it ever be certified?

Edge of Seventeen has now sold 505,673 digitally, but will her record company ever have it certified? I sure hope so, because every certification helps with artists overall tally's in the big picture. This is the first gold single of solo career if it gets certified. Please get it certified.

Well they are the same record company who touts her as a "Multi-Grammy Award Winner" and tried to get Bella Donna certified 5X platinum before it actually was 5X platinum? They like to drop the ball on anything new Stevie does, but when it comes to her old work they are on that like white on rice!

No. WBR still prides themselves on her being a multi grammy award winner and it was WBR who tried to get Bella Donna certified 5x platinum in 2004! Mode Records was sold to Randy Jackson in 1998.

Artists pay for albums to be certified... In other words, artists at their own expense pay an accounting firm to go over the record companies books etc. to confirm the sales. Record labels don't just pay for it to be done out of the goodness of their heart... That's why for veteran artists you usually see a bunch of their albums re-certified at once... They likely do a one for all accounting on all their albums/singles etc.

That's interesting, Peter—I didn't know that. But how does a third-party accounting firm gain access to record company sales figures? Are they public?

I know so little about it, but based on what I've heard (largely from you guys over the years), the album certification game is neither very transparent nor very honest. Certifications are bandied about as if they were perfectly indicative of actual at-the-counter sales, when in fact they are often equal parts sales, marketing gimmicks, snow jobs, and wishful thinking.

(The idea, for example, that a double album would actually be certified as having sold twice as many as it did just because there are two pieces of vinyl is grossly dishonest and misleading, and shouldn't be taken seriously by anyone outside the record company.)

I'm Pauline Kael, and I approved this message.

.
Which is why TUSK really only sold 2 million copies, not 4.

This may be a trivial distinction, but I don't think they really claim that it sold more units, just that there are different certification standards. Generally 500,000=gold, and 1 million=platinium, but a double album (which presumably is a tougher sell to casual fans) only has to sell 250K to go gold and 500K to go platinum.

"Edge Of Seventeen (Just Like The White Winged Dove)" by Stevie Nicks hit an underrated #11 in 1982.
