Default Emmylou Harris compilation

I am sure that there are some fans of Emmylou Harris. I would like to explore this artist and want to know if buying 2CD set "The Anthology-Warner/Reprise Years" is a good starting point. There are 44 songs culled from her 70' and 80's albums. Does anyone possess this compilation? Is it remastered? What about the quality of the songs included on it? I would be grateful for your tips

I think you have to be careful with Emmylou's earlier music; she was a full-on fried chicken-n-waffles country artist. So if you are not too keen on hardcore seventies country, I would avoid it. I think Emmylou is terrific, but I kinda got into her from the back-end: first with Wrecking Ball, then with Trio and then all of her 2000s albums- pretty much after she became more of a roots-rock artist. I've tried listening to her earlier stuff, but it's just a little too twangy for my taste.

I think calling her a hardcore country artist is a little misleading. Yes, her earlier material was more country than what she's doing now but she was more country rock than hardcore country. Her albums were a bit of a mixed bag in the early days and she didn't do fully fledged country album until Blue Kentucky Girl and then a full bluegrass style album until Roses In The Snow in 1980.

That compliation is an excellent starting point. There are some unusual choices on it but all the great early ones are there. I'd then get her first four albums: Pieces Of The Sky, Elite Hotel, Luxury Liner and Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town.

In fact, you can get all of these together in an Original Album Classics series, if it's still available. If it is then it's great value because they're all excellent. The album tracks are as good as anything you'll see on that Anthology. In the meantime, the Anythology is great.

I love her .I met her twice on her bus .Hahahaha.I'll quote HejiraNYC " she was a full-on fried chicken-n-waffles country artist" I love 70's country music , It sounds like country. Songs like this from the 1970's.Plus alot more as she recorded up to now.Emmylou just was on the Grand Ole Opry last saturday night hosting a segment.I did record the WSM radio webstream like I always do every weekend .If interested .I could post it here.

"Together Again"
"One of These Days"
"Sweet Dreams"
"(You Never Can Tell) C'est La Vie"
"Making Believe"
"To Daddy"
"Save the Last Dance for Me"
"Blue Kentucky Girl"

I would love to hear Stevie sing "Sweet Dreams" plus other Emmylou tunes and also sing together too.

Oh my God - Stevie and Emmy together would just be beautiful. Stevie is such a great harmony singer and, to recycle the oft-repeated quote about Emmy: "She could harmonise with a barking dog and make it sound beautiful". Sweet Dreams is a great choice too.

I bought "Anthology" yesterday and I've listened to the whole CD 1 and half of CD2 already. Actually, right now, when I'm writing this to you there's "In My Dreams" from CD 2 playing in the background. Emmylou Harris is one of a kind, her voice is heaven sent I really do think that Stevie should try a more "country" approach on her next album. But going back to Emmylou... "Anthology" is great compilation, beatifully packaged with tons of pics, essay, full discography annotations and music credits... And sound is clear and well balanced. From CD1 I absolutely love "Save The Last Dance For Me" and "Together Again". Her rendition of "Mister Sandman" is a gem also. From Disc 2 I love her version of "I Still Miss Someone"-100 times better than Stevie's "The Other Side Of The Mirror" lukewarm performance. There's also Trio master jam "To Know Him Is To Love Him" and faster paced "Heaven Only Knows" that sounds familiar to me...but I don't know why. It's a shame that it has taken me so long to discover this "songbird" and no matter how hardcore or delicately country she may be I'm in the awe of her indistupable talents.

Dani - have you heard Red Dirt Girl? The album after Wrecking Ball and also produced by Daniel Lanois. Brilliant. It has a gew more self-written tracks, the title track is excellent, and it's just a brilliant album. Then there's Stumble Into Grace. They kind of make a trilogy of albums.
