38. Lindsey Buckingham
She Smiled Sweetly (The Rolling Stones cover)

Download MP3

Buckingham’s Seeds We Sow went top ten on the Billboard charts – not bad for a self-released album by a man in his early sixties. His take on “She Smiles Sweetly” trades the church-like hush of the Stones’ original for the quiet of a man alone in his room, always haunted after midnight. “Don’t worry,” he whispers, quoting her, and you know he feels her breath on the back of his neck, like a breeze from his beloved Pacific Ocean, and you can hear it brushing the sand from his spirit. – Patrick Robbins

Thanks elle!

Funny, isn't this version the one most are 'meh' about on the album and prefer his older version?

Precisely. Which goes to show that we as fans have a very different radar when we judge/critique LB's work than those who aren't familiar/more casual/have no idea.

But then again it also goes as evidence that we're biased when it comes to judging his work. Or in some cases even more critical than outsiders because of our raised expectation of his work.

Yes, yes. We aim high with him. And then we're perfectly happy to fanboy/girl over stuff people no doubt are clueless over.

Such a dichotomy in being LB fans.

you know, i blame people who screamed since GOS 2008 came out how he shouldn't have used originally recorded versions on new albums for re-recorded version of She Smiled Sweetly on SWS. sure it's pretty, but the original GOS one was almost perfection. especially how he sang the verses - i always feel the need to listen to it over and over again. new version i just let go on to another song...

but back to my original point - people have for years complained why did SYW, UTS and GOS had originally recorded versions of songs from GOS sessions, and that b/c of that fact these albums are highly uneven / unevenly produced (well, yeah, they are, but...). so now SWS is evenly produced, all songs are recorded anew, and it's produced to be raw, and not an overproduced perfection like OOTC was (but there people complained why did he need to go for overproduced perfection when he could've just put many albums out in that time frame much faster )... and now people complain that SWS is too raw and too sloppily produced - so you never can win them all!!

I love the aesthetic on SWS but I just wish it was mixed with a bit more bass and a bit less treble. And that WSCD didn't distort during the chorus... But the choices like speeding up the voice and the arrangements are great.
