Default Heaven's Only Days Down The Road

100 so miles from the Mobile River
Lord I can't have her so I got to kill her
Heaven's Only Days down the road

Liquor store down on the county line
Don't want all the land but what's next to mine
Heaven's only days down the road

Been insane since I was 9
Never was the cryin' but the fightin' kind
Oh yeah

Load up the gun full of regret
I ain't even pulled the trigger yet
Oh yeah

Lost all my faith a man can own
My hopes are empty an so is my soul
Heaven's only days down the road

Look at my fate in the paper now
I want to put her back but I don't know how
Heaven's only days down the road

Nobody wants me down there no more
Look at what I did to make them hate me for
Oh yeah

Can't blame the whiskey or my Mammy's ways
2 little girls are better off this way
Oh yeah

Heaven's only days down the road
Oh Heaven's only days down the road
Down the road. Down the road

(the sound of two shots fired ends the song)

Shelby Lynne's latest CD, Revelation Road

What do you write following a song like that?
A song that deals with the murder-suicide her
dad commited against her mother and then
himself back in 1986. I can't even imagine
how hard it was for her to sing about this.

Shelby hasn't disappointed on any of her
albums since before I Am Shelby Lynne,
and this one's no different. She is a true talent.

I am a BIG fan of Shelby; can't wait for Philly & NYC in two weeks. "The Thief" is my current favourite from Revelation Road, but that's subject to change-I'm also enjoying "Lead Me Love".

Glad to know we have another Shelby fan to
count on the Ledge. I'm not sure what my
favorite song is yet.

COOL!

She's out there all by her lonesome for
this tour right? What do you think of
that? Some can pull that off, others not
so much.

With that voice of hers I'd go see her
if she was only playing spoons.

Yes, just Shelby and her guitar army. It lets her voice be more of an instrument-no worries about guitar solos. The new songs, to me, are actually better acoustically than on the CD.

She pulls it off beautifully.

I'm a BIG Shelby fan but have yet to see her live because she rarely plays outwith the US and when she has I've missed her. Haven't had time to get into the new album yet but it will likely be my weekend listening. I think she's just fantastic. I even like (apart from the Lennon cover) Love, Shelby which got some shocking reviews. I also never thought anyone should cover Dusty until I heard Shelby's Just A Little Lovin' album. Identity Crisis has to be my favourite though - brilliant.

As for the song above, it really is quite harrowing. Have you also heard Cold, Cold Earth - the version of events as told in song by Shelby's sister, Allison Moorer? I think she's great too. That track can be found on her Ultimate Collection.

I haven't heard that one. I checked my CD's but it wasn't on the
two I have of her. I guess it's exclusive to the one you mentioned.

I hope you get the chance to see Shelby live Dodfather. She put on
one of the best shows I've ever seen. That voice, oh that voice.

I hope so too!

This is the collection that has Cold, Cold Earth on it. It's a singles/best of collection from her first few albums. Cold, Cold Earth is a hidden track (although it is in the tracklisting) that plays after the last one. It's very haunting. Here's the album on amazon. I'd highly recommend it, it's an excellent collection:

Cold, Cold Earth lyrics
(Allison Moorer)

The night was hot and steamy
And crickets played their tune
Everyone was sleeping
Under an August moon

Except one man that sat awake
Slowly going mad
Regretting that he'd thrown away
The only love he had

A slave to the bottle
He'd driven his family to leave
A wife and two daughters
He treated so terribly

Drunk with grief and loneliness
He wasn't thinking straight

He knew he couldn't live unless
They pardoned his mistakes

He went into the city
To try to make amends
Asked his love for pity
But she would not give in

Overwhelmed with sadness
He reached for his gun
And took her life along with his
Before the morning sun

Now they are lying
In the cold, cold earth
Such a sad, sad story
Such a sad, sad world

Thanks for posting the lyrics Eugene.

I checked out some more of Allison's
music on YouTube. She has those same
beautiful blue eyes as her sister.

Oh Allison has done some great stuff. Think It Over, Alabama Song, Ruby Jewel Was Here, The Hardeast Part... those are just a few of my favourites.

Speaking of Allison, I just can't see her married to Steve Earle.
