Default Death before Disco

Right now I'm watching a Bee Gees documentary. Just the disco years they were involved, and I started to remember all those songs and bands, some of them mentioned by Barry, Maurice and Robin: Donna Summer, KC, Gloria Gaynor, etc. I also remember Studio 54 and music I understand was popular there.

But Disco was also hated because it was decadent; an anti-disco sentiment manifested itself, particularly in America.. July 12, 1979 became known as "the day disco died" because of an anti-disco demonstration that was held in Chicago. Though I think it was still popular during 1980. The 80s meant the end of (classical) disco and even some "dinosaur" rock bands.

Did you hate disco? Did you enjoyed. After 30 years I guess nobody is ashamed to admit they danced like Tony Manero or enjoyed Last Dance.

Or....

What a great idea for a thread - this should be done for other musical genres too! Like anything, I know and like some disco stuff but have heard some dreadful stuff too!

I've always liked disco.Comparing it wth todays crap of rap/hip hop mixes.I do remember the record burning in 1979. I kept mine and still got my records.Groups like the Bee Gees.Van Mccoy,Donna Summer.Gloria Gaynor,KC & the Sunshine Band, Vicki Sue Robinson,Andrea True Connection and ABBA.Here a webpage with more names of singers and groups.http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/page...o-artists.html
I love those 12 inch singles which play forever.Back then some rock bands like the Stones were getting into disco and also some country music artist were getting involve too.Like Bill Anderson's "I Can't Wait Any Longer".

Disco record burning.What a shame.

There are definitely some disco songs I very much enjoy... but I've never understood the intense divisive feelings disco seems to elicit in people. It's just dance music. There was dance music before disco, and there was dance music after disco. I think disco was a direct reaction to the singer/songwriter & classic rock genres that dominated the music scene from the late '60s through the late '70s. Clearly people wanted a lighter style of music that was celebratory. The '60s & '70s were not particularly happy decades... so people enjoyed escaping into disco for a while. Was it great, deep music? Not really. But it's not the demon some people make it out to be either.

Here's my fav disco era song:

Let's throw KC & The Sunshine Band in a ditch and shoot them.

Oh, what was the question again?

I consider the Bee Gees one of my all-time favorite bands! But, I discovered them in 1997, so.

I like the Bee Gee's and KC & the Sunshine Band and several other disco songs. I really enjoy fun uptempo music.

Maybe somebody should do a retake of the record burning against the mainstream crap that we hear today on the radio.Us rockers got to deal with rap/hip hop, teenybopper music soaking the top of the charts.Really cant call it a CD burning since cd will be going south soon .Can call it a flash drive/harddrive burning.I'm glad FM weaved through the disco tunes to get ou the charts back in the 70's.Stevie and the Mac plowed through K.C. Sunshine,Donna Summer and other disco artists with the Rumours record .Today It will be harder for a rock band to get onto the mainstream charts and nevermind trying as a solo as somebody we know.

I love quite a few disco singers/bands - Donna Summer, Chic, Boney M., Kool & The Gang, Giorgio Moroder, etc. but I don't love all of it.
