I'm one of those crazy obsessed fans that bought Vanessa'sCarlton's album because Stevie did the duet..I also bought Tom Petty's releases because of Stevie's vocals on The Insider, Needles and Pins and etc.....Is there a chance that Natalie Maines(Dixie Chicks) Sheryl Crow, Macy Gray and Sarah's appearances on Trouble in Shangri La could have given Stevie's sales an additional 20% in sales.....possible??? What would have happened if Taylor Swift would have done the harmonies on For Whats Its Worth, Tom Petty had done Everybody Love You duet with her and Sheryl had done the harmonies for You Might Be The One and Annie Lennox had done the back up vocals on Moonlight.and Courtney Love had done back up vocals for Ghosts are Gone ...would that had sold another 30,000 units the first week?...just a thought

I think part of it had to do with the fact that she hadn't released any solo material in 6 or 7 years... and she was the first one to put out a record following the wave that was "The Dance"...

I seriously doubt it. I think TISL was simply an album that got released at a time before the real tanking of CD sales. It was starting, yes, but IYD is being released after years of cratering sales.
I think in better times TISL actually would have gone platinum. Also, Nicks has been around a long long time. Even starting with TISL she was no longer getting radio play. It's been an incredible run for her to have had a multiplatinum album, a double platinum album, 3 platinums and 3 gold albums. 11.5 million albums sales as a solo act, and that's just counting U.S. sales, is a hell of a run especially since it's her second career. It's pretty amazing that Nicks is 4 decades into a duel career and is over 60 and still landed a top 10 album. |

I was working at a record store at the time. Those were still the days when people lined up outside in the morning for new releases.

TISL sales came alot of from the momentum of The Dance.

Whether they helped or not I'm thrilled IYD didn't go that route. I hated that that album was almost marketed as "Stevie and Friends." when in reality it didn't rely heavily at all on guest stars other then Natalie Maines dueting on TFFT and Sheryl obviously sang on many songs and did a chunk of the producing. They woulkd list Sarah M. and Macy G. alongside those 2 as equal contribututor when they both provide barely noticeably harmonies on 2 songs.
Thank God In Your Dreams didn't go that route. I don't care if it would've added another 300,000 sales!

It's a hard thing to measure, but I'm doubtful. Most people I know were hardly aware that Stevie had a new album at the time. Those who bought it were mostly Mac/Stevie fans, from what I saw.
I know it's not the same thing, but I don't think Street Angel got a boost from Dylan's & Crosby's appearances either. ![]() - Jake

That was 4 year before though. Personally I think they didn't strike when the iron was hot. TISL had an impressive debut but that was about all. I think a brand new Stevie CD would have done much better right on the heels of The Dance, not 4 years later.

Yes, Stevie had an obligation to do her Enchanted Box set to complete her Modern contract in 1998, but Stevie should have had her Reprise solo record ready by the summer or fall of 1999 or the very latest summer of 2000 imo. By the time 2001 came around, TISL while anticipated, was a little anticlimactic 4 years after the Dance and taking 2 years to complete. That was insane. Sheryl really threw Stevie a monkey wrench when she couldn't complete the record and Stevie and Reprise were adrift too long looking for the right producer. If Stevie had put out TISL in a more timely manner, FM would have completed their next record a year or 2 earlier as well, which would have been much better timing. THEN do the very best FM of afterwards. Oh, If we could only rewrite history or have Stevie and FM record records faster. But actually Stevie succeeded in doing so this time around. Though it was a longtime coming, IYD came together very quickly and benefited by doing so (and having Dave & Glen throughout the whole project) which is why IYD sounds like Stevie's most consistent & cohesive album since Bella Donna IMO. Oh well, though I would change the timing of these records, I'm very happy with the final results. IYD is just what Stevie needed in her solo catalogue. I knew she could top TISL, but I'm not sure she can top IYD. ![]() |
