Thumbs up Olive Oil

This is probably the most random discussion I've ever started here. Are any of us here big fans or proponents of olive oil? It has great health benefits and you hear about how we're supposed to get about 2 tablespoons of that stuff a day, or something like that!

Personally, I love it! Unfortunately when I'm at school I don't get all that much, but one of my favorite things to make quickly at home is what I like to call TunaMac. I use Kraft macaroni (with not nearly as much butter as the box recommends), tuna, and drizzle it with a couple of tablespoons of olive oil. Call me crazy, but I've always loved it!!!

Anyway, any of us out there love this stuff???

I don't want to sound judgmental... but don't you feel like you are negating the potential benefits of olive oil by drizzling on such processed, refined, artificial junk food? I mean, if you are eating this because you like the taste, mazel tov! But don't think that you're doing yourself any favors health-wise.

ha ha- I use it on more than just that. That was the first thing back in the day when I was a lot younger I'd try it with!

I love olive oil. And walnut oil, and grapeseed oil. I use olive oil in pretty much everything that I eat. I brush it on veggies before grilling them. I pan roast beets, potatoes and carrots in olive oil. Anything I eat that has tomatoes also has olive oil in it. It's such good stuff. For high temperature cooking, it's good to use olive oil and butter (not margarine) together; each one will burn if it gets too hot, but together they can be used for much higher temperatures than on their own.

Grapeseed oil is good for sauteing or frying, but not so much by itself. The flavor isnt as pleasant as olive oil. I use walnut oil for baking, and little else.

O & Company has the best olive oils I've tried. They cost way too much, typically between 35-55 dollars per bottle, but I do keep a bottle of their Ravida on hand - it tastes like fresh cut grass and is amazing in salad dressings.

Did you know that the taste of olive oil is determined by the mineral and organic content of the soil the trees are grown in? That's why some olive oils taste grassy, while others are buttery.
