Default Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducts Cooper, Diamond, Dr. John, Waits & Da

If the promise of "In Your Dreams" holds true, Stevie has a great shot at becoming a double-inductee.

26th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony took place last night (March 14).

Inductees:
· Alice Cooper (inducted by Rob Zombie)
· Neil Diamond (inducted by Paul Simon)
· Dr. John (inducted by John Legend)
· Darlene Love (inducted by Better Midler)
· Tom Waits (inducted by Neil Young)

Ahmet Ertegun Award recipients (nonperformers):
· Jac Holzman
· Art Rupe

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Award for Musical Excellence (previously the Sidemen category):
· Leon Russell

Who was nominated this year but didn't garner enough votes?
Donovan, Chic, Bon Jovi, The Beastie Boys, Donna Summer, J. Geils Band, Joe Tex, Chuck Willis, Laura Nyro and LL Cool J.

The 26th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony will air on Fuse on Sunday, March 20 at 9 p.m.

This might explain Jon's rant yesterday about how iTunes and Steve Jobs have "ruined" the music industry becasue kids don't have to walk in the snow uphill both ways to buy albums with big covers that they can stare at while they listen with anticipation for each song on their headphones. He had to lash out at someone, apparently.

And thank goodness some of us still appreciate album art and covers, and why we make a big fuss over them

JBJ is just an ornery old man. Having come of age around the same time as JBJ, I can totally relate to the rush of traveling great distances and scouring through stacks of vinyl (especially the "import" rack at Tower- love!) and rushing home with great anticipation to listen to my latest finds. But I must admit that I have totally evolved into someone with attention deficit. I'm an information addict and it seems like every second of every day has to be filled with some kind of mental stimulation- much of it online. Accordingly, it just isn't enough for me to sit there and listen to music anymore. If I listen to music, I also have to be doing something else "productive," whether it is doing chores, getting from Point A to B, reading, surfing the web, etc. I do long for the innocence of another time when music was more of a singular, immersive experience for me. But, for better or worse, that's just not who I am today. Times change, dude. Deal with it.

It's nice that Alice Cooper is finally getting his due, but after all this time I'd tell them to shove it up their arse. I mean, f*cking Madonna was inducted before him.

For me, the only inductee who mattered this year, and why the hell wasn't he inducted 20 years ago?

^^ Me too. It's really -hard- to sit and listen to music while doing absolutely nothing else. However, I think what Jon is missing is that with age comes the responsibility to do other things, like working and taking care of your home and family and developing your social life, with people who probably have lots of similar things to do themselves. And none of this is because of iTunes or Steve Jobs or Apple. It's called growing up.

If anything, iTunes and digital music in general has expanded the market for artists who would have never stood a chance being heard. I can say in complete honesty that most of what I purchase and listen to today is music I would never have known existed if it weren't for iTunes. I still make that epic journey up the street to buy it on CD, but iTunes is where the marketing comes in, because we all know how ****ty radio is these days.

Agreed! But to JBJ's point, the internet and iTunes has effectively killed the record store concept. Even in Manhattan, arguably the center of the known universe, I really can't think of a convenient place (in walking terms) to buy music. Ten years ago I could kill hours of time at the Virgin Megastore at Union Square, the Tower Records on Lower Broadway, and any number of smaller indie stores. What's left now? A handful of Best Buys? Or schlep all the way downtown to J&R? I'm wondering where I should go to pick up a physical copy of IYD when it comes out. Chances are, I'll just end up buying it online just like everything else.

This is unfortunate indeed. I still buy my music at an independent record store. I can even walk there! They have live in-store appearances and sell concert tickets which I guess helps bring in foot traffic. I suppose I take for granted how the indie stores managed to survive here, but not many other places. It's kinda weird?!

The ones you'll most likely know are Delta Lady and A Song For You. The latter has been covered far too often though - but the Carpenters version is incredible!
