A coalition of traditional and digital publishers this month will launch the first-ever concerted crackdown on copyright pirates on the web, initially targeting violators who use large numbers of intact articles. . . . . . online publishers identified by his company will be sent a letter informing them of the violations and urging them to enter into license agreements with the publishers whose content appears on their sites. If copyright pirates refuse to pay, Attributor will request the major search engines to remove offending pages from search results and will ask banner services to stop serving ads to pages containing unauthorized content. The search engines and ad services are required to immediately honor such requests by the federal Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). If the above efforts fail, Attributor will ask hosting services to take down pirate sites. I wonder if this will affect places like the Blue Letter Archives, and everywhere else that has old magazine and newspaper articles about Fleetwood Mac. |

I'm not sure how much this will affect a place like Blue Letter. Some aspects of Fair Use might be applicable, particularly regarding old junk.
This is a good thing for people that work doing what I do, because it'll perhaps help to prevent article farming and other things that ruin my paycheck, BUT at the same time, how on earth can we read a newspaper article from 15 years ago if the newspaper itself doesn't care enough to make it available to us anywhere? That's one thing that really drives me up a tree about this kind of stuff - take NBC. If you put up the '83 SNL Stand Back performance on YouTube, they will yank it in a heartbeat while screeching copyright breach, but they don't have it available on any DVD that I know of so I can go BUY it and see it that way. Jerks. So hopefully they'll only really be going after places that reproduce entire sites/batches of content/etc willy-nilly like the article farming sites do, and not places like our Mac archives, where it's obvious no one's trying to make money from anything, just put it somewhere fans can see it.
