Default At Last ...

Hi everyone, Ive been constantly listening to the version of At Last by Stevie. Just goes to show her voice can still cut it when she has to... Love how she adds her own touch to it with the "You are mine, you are mine ...". So I was wondering does anyone have any video footage of when she performed this??

I don't know if there's a video of the performance but you can read the reviews on her site: Andre Agassi Benefit Reviews.

I always thought the last review on that page (by Angela) was really interesting.

^^Maybe it seemed Stevie's lonely days were finally over...

I have to say I have never been a fan of the song (At Last) in general... I have felt that Stevie has brought a certain 'Stevie-ness' to every song she's ever covered, but not so much this one...she sings it well, don't get me wrong...but ...well...it kinda bores me...

The only version of the song I love is Cyndi Lauper's...to me, she brought out the feeling in the song more than anyone else I've heard sing it (and yes, I am including Etta James in there...)

Ok, flame on...

Hmm, to say you like Cyndi's over what is widely consideredto be the panultimate version of the song, ie Etta James is kinda pushing it... ;-)

I love love love Stevie's version, her vocals and delivery are among the strongest ever and I made me yearn for her to record an album of standards. Not anymore, because everyone has done that now.

I love the entire Stormy Weather album, by the way, my second fave being "Is That All There Is" by Sandra Bernhard which in my humble opinion IS better than the original ;-)

This is one of my favorite songs of all time. ALTHOUGH- Etta James really is the master of this song!

No, I don't think it is, because I didn't say it's better than, only that IMHO, Cyn brings out more emotion...I am not a fan of Etta James' voice...the fact that hers is widely considered to be the penultimate version is not in dispute ... only that I like Cyn's version better....

That is one of my biggest fears, honestly - I'd get it. and I'd love it, because it's Stevie...but I really don't want it to happen...now if she did an album of Rock covers that really rocked (No 'American Songbook') but rock songs by other artists that Stevie could Stevie-ize...that I'd love...

I haven't listened to it in quite awhile, but I remember thinking it was decent...

I don't care if Lindsey showed up in black lingerie with a blow-up doll under his arm; I want to see evidence of Stevie shakin' it to Brick House.

Am I getting a reputation here or something? I like Stevie's, but it's completely different from Cyn's. Stevie's was sassy and un-Stevie-ish; I never would have expected her to sing it that way (or even that well). Cyndi's is my favourite because... it''s Cyndi's. Vocally impressive, great live, etc.

Couldn't that be said about any cover song? Hardly any version that comes after the original will be considered up to snuff.

That's it exactly! Thank you - Stevie did it very close to the original. I'm not saying it's bad, just to be clear, and her voice is great on it (and she looked stunning in the red dress) but since I didn't really care for the song to begin with, i don't love the version - Cyn stripped all the hoo-ha out of the song and just sang the words and brought me ta church ... I just feel so much emotion in Cyn's version (and yes, especially when she does it live) ... it feels true to me...like it's a middle aged person, or someone who's been through the trenches who finally found love...at last...I don't get that from any other version I've heard...

That's what I ususally like about Stevie's covers (and what I love about 'At Last' the album) Stevie has a way of making anything she covers (usually) into a Stevie song - almost like it's a new song, not a cover (Silent Night, for instance...) When somone covers a song the way it was originally done, often I will enjoy it, but I don't quite get the point if it's already been done that way...
