Okay, shoot me. I understand. You are all thinking, "this song has been explained in interviews a thousand and one times and yet Dani STILL posts a thread about it simply because she wants to thrust her obsession against the helpless board."
However, how much do we REALLY know? The name was inspired from The Triad, the character sprouting from a series of myths that claimed she was "the maker of birds, and the goddess of steeds; she's the protector of horses. Her music is like a pain pill. When you wake up and hear her birds singing her little song, the danger will have passed" (Nicks 1996, inherownwords.com). That is essentially all we know as concrete fact. Granted, this explanation is much more detailed and specific than any other self-professed origin of a Nicks work, therefore losing much of the puzzling appeal that drives avid fans to explicate any further meaning. For many, Rhiannon was written about a Welsh witch. It is as simple as that, and the song merely captures Stevie's dramatiziced and partially fabricated "story" of a gothic legend. Beautiful, no doubt, but simple. For me, "Rhiannon" is one of Stevie's most complex and intiguing works because of a single staple aspect of any piece: To some degree, a writer is within each and every one of his or her works, despite how hard one tries to cover it. I believe "Rhiannon" is as autobiographical as it is fictional because in illustrating the characteristics she finds most alluring, Stevie illustrates herself. I will write a line-by-line analysis of the song tomorrow, but for now, write your own responses and consider the following quote, especially given the time period in which "Rhiannon" was written and recorded: "So it is ~ it's just about, it's just about a very mystical woman that is finds it very, very hard to be tied down in any kind of way ~ and she's uplifting all through the song. That's ~ that's what I wanted to get and that's what the band got really well was that uplifting of wings kind of a feel, you know ~ when you feel like you see a seagull and she's, she's like lifting up. Well, that's, that's Rhiannon. Rhiannon ~ yeah ~ she's moving up." |

This song is amaaaaaaaazing and we could have talked about it 9385492 times before and I still wouldn't care that we're talking about it again! Wooooooo
![]() I just think it's such a unique song -- and I'm obsessed with how you can listen to various shows throughout the '70s and you're almost guaranteed a unique listen. She would always change it up a little at the end. P.S. I still want "Dreams unwind, love's a state of mind" tattooed on the inside of my wrist. Can't wait to hear more from you Dani about Rhiaaaaaaaaaannon!

Oh..I definetly think There's "Stevie" in Rhiannon....yes I agree that every author leaks a little of themselves in each character they create or write about.. I know Stevie said she had not actually read the story of "Rhiannon", only about the character from the book Triad named Rhiannon at the time she wrote the song. Interestingly, the song doesn't say much about the myth...the birds taking away the pain etc, ( only, "she is like a bird in flight") I think Stevie must of did more research and read the true story after the fact and then wrote 3 birds of Rhiannon after knowing more of the legend...but at the time she wrote Rhiannon I think she just really liked the name and it was about some beautiful ,mystical , powerful woman, very entracing that she created in her mind..like some kind of goddess and much like whom she herself would have liked to be...remember this was coming from a woman who had not yet caught fever yet and hadn't had the pure taste of stardom at that point (late 74). The song to me is more of a love song..or a woman looking for love...deserving of love...because she's so special and lovely...but she's broken at the end..."Dreams unwind', Loves a state of mind". And the" Silly Dreamer"...You thought you could love or be loved but its "all the same game".... resulting in disallusionment and disappointment.I think there was more reflection of herself in that song than the mythological Rhiannon...going strictly by the lyrics...I think when Stevie has performed Rhiannon..especially in the old days...she was actually recreating more of the mythological Rhiannon...she became the Rhiannon through her dance and the mythological Rhiannon slowly evolved.
BTW...I will always Looove this song no matter how much it has been talked of...one can always relate... and this song has had so much passion through the years..it has had enough strength in that to remain legendary and timeless. |

Great song & great track. The repeating riff is one of the best hooks in all Popdom, & the sharply ascending & then gently descending line of the chorus (borrowed from Madama Butterfly) is super-catchy too. Nice words.
Excellent track, but I sometimes wonder what might have been on Rumours, where Keith Olsen was absent & the band themselves were the orchestrators & producers. They had better ideas for arrangements than Keith did, & they recorded Mick's drums with greater presence & skill.

![]() The album version of Rhiannon leaves me pretty cold these days. In fact, it grates on my nerves. I do love the opening guitar because it's so classic, but I'd rather listen to it live (1975-1980, especially).I was listening to the Buckingham Nicks live Rhiannon a couple of nights ago and it was interesting to hear how it evolved. It was clear how a year or two and some pro studio work really polished it up. No "dreams unwind" at the end, but she does sing different lyrics ("who will be her master?") that I like. This was the first song other than edge of seventeen that got me hooked I was like hey this is good music. I love the part where she says "she is like a cat in the dark" . As for going to coal mines i've got hellacious field day of our barracks rooms tonight cause our CO is coming through then got to be at work at 6 am.
Anyway back to the song, could this song be talking about Stevie herself? Idk maybe I know the part about could you ever win, maybe as for the rest idk. As for the witch thing, don't get me started I don't know anything about the actual Rhiannon myth i'm more of an Egyptian myth person, because it's my pantheon of worship. (If you don't know and want to just ask! Also personally I think SOTM is more about witches then anything) I like the idea of her being a goddess of birds and stuff, i'd like to look more into this.
