Has Stevie ever said who she wrote this about? What a beautiful song, so many times we might break up with someone then realize we made a mistake and it's to late

She has said that that song turned out to be about the future. She feels it was strangely prescient and had little to do with her life when she wrote it and everything to do with what was to come.

this has always confused me because Stevie has said "I've Loved and I've Lost" was the first song she ever wrote, but I've also heard her say "Rose Garden" was the first song she ever wrote. anyway, I think what Michele said is true. it's very much like some of Stevie's other songs in that she had a sort of premonition when writing it...that seems to be a rare occurence (mostly before she was famous) that Stevie would write a song without it having some direct connection to her life at present.

I've never heard her say Rose Garden was the first song she wrote. Do you remember where you got that from?

Quote:
Tommy Vance Interview 1994 - "Rose Garden I wrote on the guitar when I was about sixteen years old. I was a sophomore in high school. I was very upset about something that I saw, just a little something that happened, and I just sat down and wrote that song. And then I always wanted to do it and it always seemed, again, not the right time for it. And this time I sat down and I actually played it on the guitar. I don't play guitar much anymore. The people I was working with said, 'well this is a serious song, and it's a good song, you know, it's a little kind of country' and, 'let's do it, let's do it' you know. And having Bernie Leadon, you know, with his Eagle background and his acoustic, he's so good, um you know, he just picked it right up and it was done. I mean, that was one of the songs that was worked out very very quickly. And it is recorded exactly the way that, I knew one pick, I knew the Joan Baez 'da da da dum dum' that kind of thing. So it was like 'you never promised me a rose garden da da da dum dum.' So that's how it was." Boston Herald 1994 - "That song is very much a premonition but I wrote it about some people in my family when I was just graduating high school. I wasn't in a band or anything. I wrote purely for myself on a guitar I got for my 16th birthday. I didn't want to be famous or anything I just loved to close myself up somewhere with candlelight and a really neat pen and paper and write. It became a very important thing for me." Donnie Wayne ~ |

I love Rose Garden. I wish she'd put it back in her solo set.

No wonder she had bad eye sight for so many years. I can barely see anything in candlelight, let alone write.
