Default If you could create the next Stevie CD...

If Stevie decided to make her next CD completely out of all her demos and unreleased songs, and maybe a cover of a song that isn't hers, what do you think would make a great Stevie Nicks album.

Now, here is the challenge. Don't make this your personal top ten list. Think about what songs would translate well to a brand new recording done today. As much as I love Julia I'm not sure if it would work as well today as it did when she first made the demo, unless it would go through a major retooling. Castaway is one of my favorite demos and I could see that working but only if it got the Planets of the Universe treatment with a total reinvention.

Also think about sequencing. How well do the songs flow? What would make a great opener and what would end the album with the same emotional impact as Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?

There are three demos that should make it to an album and I think she can sing these.

Three Birds of Rhiannon
Is Anybody There?
The Forest of Black Roses

I think these are good songs.

To me, there's not a whole lot left that could really be transferred to modern music, with Stevie's current state of being. At best, some of her older demos could be great filler material to compliment new stuff.

Here are a few personal favs in no particular order, which I think could be resurrected:

1) If You Were My Love

2) My Heart

3) Mirror Mirror

4) Cecelia (I just just hear how trippy and modern this one could be!)

Here are some songs I think she could use for a possible Rhiannon movie or something of that ilk:

1) Forest of the Black Roses

2) 3 Birds of Rhiannon

3) Sanctuary

4) Have No Heart

5) Melacine/The Witch

Songs I think are great, but just don't have a possible home anymore:

1) Julia

2) Watchdevil

3) Prettiest Girl in the World

4) Mistress of My Fate

Some songs that were released, but into the twilight zone, and should be reexamined:

1) Not Make Believe

2) You're Not the One

3) Joan of Arc

4) Touched By An Angel

I really think Not Make Believe was treated as a throwaway by the production team. I love the lyrics and Mick's drumming but it doesn't go anywhere. And with proper instrumentation and some great background vocals it could have really soared. Especially with Lindsey's wild processed vocal things he does, like the dum dum dums at the end of Everywhere and the ghostly background vocals in Illume. I could totally see this revisited, or maybe remixed into a club tune.

I think she should record "Annabel Lee" for her album.

I totally agree with you. I think Not Make Believe is lyrically one of the strongest songs she's ever written, very poignant. And the solo demos of the song were just fantastic. I agree the song wasn't a complete effort by Fleetwood Mac, and hopefully it will resurface before she retires. Maybe on the NEXT Mac album, if they use an outside producer...

To me, I wouldn't say the lyrics are strong, but the emotion is. I agree they are very poignant and intense in the vulnerability they showcase. Definitely should have made the album cut. I say, do it in concert, baby.

....depending on what kind of album I would want. If darker, then Space Needle, Mistaken Love, Joan of Arc,Christian and She Loves Him Still would be my picks for album tracks. If more pop and airy, My Heart and Julia would make it.

I agree that Space Needle really should have seen the light of day. The problem is it's just so dark, I can't imagine how Stevie would work it into a new album (solo or Mac) at this point. She's just in such a different place now... she should have recorded that song about a decade ago. But if it surfaces in the future, you won't hear any complaints from me!

You I think capture my thoughts better than I could myself. Not Make Believe is one of the most lyrically honest and provocative songs she's written. It just had so much potential that wasn't tapped into. But then again, I think the only song of Stevie's on Say You Will that seemed like a fully fleshed out, finished product to me was Destiny Rules. Thrown Down especially seems hastily done to me, and that's a REAL shame. But I digress...

I like the song, but I don't consider it her finest lyrical moment by a long shot. The first verse, in particular, is a string of cliches and well-worn phrases, such as...

Best of times, worst of times

Thief in the night

Taking no prisoners

Adventures in paradise
