Hehman Madison Square Garden on September 30th. 8:30 p.m. The best coed '70s rock band in the world that's still going strong—and the arena isn't full?!? I felt so bad that so few people came to see Fleetwood Mac that night; I thought I saw Lindsey looking up at the 300 Section and shaking his head before the lights came on. Any disappointment that he might have had following did not surface; the band kicked into motion with "The Chain" and the audience went wild. And there I was in Section 78, to the right of the stage, just about eighty feet away from the stage and having what was probably the best night of my life! I can barely remember how the songs went; I recall what I perceived visually, as well as the thrill I felt watching a concert involving a drummer who is as talented as he is psychotic, an equally psychotic-yet-talented guitarist, a reserved bassist, and a witchy woman who's still got it goin' on at 55 years old. Watching them perform with such ease, and with no tension; now I know what people mean when they say the Mac is better than ever. During "Say You Will," "Say Goodbye," "Silver Springs" and "Landslide," Stevie and Lindsey seemed more to be performing for each other than for us. To watch that chemistry, there are just no words to describe it. "Eyes of the World," that gem from 'Mirage' I'd never heard till then, was just plain off the wall; "Second Hand News" was more rock and less ability than the original; "Never Going Back Again" had a nice extra touch with added percussion from Mick; "Tusk" was off the hook, with a memorable moment when Stevie and Lindsey "boxed"; "Silver Springs," my favorite Mac song, just had me in total bliss; "Beautiful Child" was six minutes of thrilling beauty. Lindsey "went insane," if you'll excuse the pun, on his guitar solos for "Go Your Own Way," "Come" and "I'm So Afraid;" at times he'd sit on the edge of the stage, take his hands off his guitar and let the crowd in the front row strum it for him! Lots of humping and lassoing, as well. What a wild man! "Stand Back" was probably the hottest moment of the night. Stevie was just on fire!!! At the beginning of the show she had on a pair of three-inch orthopedic (sp?) shoes, but she got out those platform heels near the middle of the concert. After "Tusk" Taku Hirano did a big drum solo (to which Lindsey belly danced, hee hee), and then Stevie ran out on stage with that black-and-gold cape and I literally screamed myself hoarse! (I don't think the people seated behind me really liked me by the end of the night.) The whole crowd was on its feet and Stevie was in her best form in a long time; she did about twelve twirls during "Stand Back" along with two or three high kicks—pretty impressive for 55! The night ended with "Goodbye Baby," but much of the crowd had left by then because they were unaware about the encores (lucky me; I had the playlist from the getgo). Just totally beautiful. No other word can describe it. Stevie's voice, raspy yet so tender...sorry if I'm just waxing poetic here; I just loved that song. And then they walked offstage, and it was the end to a magical night. Rated "5" by Scott Wilson aka VeggieScott I've been going to concerts for thirty years now (Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' tour being my first in 1973 at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey when I was 15). I've seen pretty much everybody since then, somewhere around 150 concerts, rock, jazz, blues, standards, etc. Rarely does a show knock me out these days; that changed this past Tuesday at the Garden. Fleetwood Mac was flat out phenomenal. I'll admit I'm a bit biased, as I've loved them since Stevie and Lindsey joined, and I've seen Stevie's solo act twice ('83 & '86), but I still wasn't prepared for how incredible they still are. I've been looking forward to seeing Lindsay, as I've always believed he's one of the most underrated guitarists around. He was absolutely every thing I imagined, albeit a little over the top at times. 'Big Love' flat out blew me away. Mick was fantastic on drums, and really entertaining towards the end. Let's face it, if there is someone from the band everyone would like to hang out with for an evening, it has to be Mick . John quietly held everything together, and his base was shaking my seat . Given the crowd reaction, Stevie was, as always, the star (I know, I know, Lindsey got incredible ovations - believe me, I was whistling as loud as possible myself). The crowd just seemed blown away by her every time she did anything. And she did everything well. She can't get up in the registry as well as she once did, but she compensates for it with her experience. She truly is THE rock Goddess. This show was as good as anything I've ever seen. Period. And that comes from someone who's favorite all time band is Tull, who I've seen 13 times and could go on and on about how every show blew me away. And I've always maintained that the best single show I've ever seen was Jeff Beck at the Capitol in Jersey in '80, but I gotta tell ya, if Christine McVie had walked out on stage and joined in, this show would have replaced Beck's. I definitely missed Christine, but all in all, it was worth every penny of the ridiculous amount of money we paid to see them I'm still charged up about it, and it's been five days since! Long may they reign.......... Rated "5" by Scottie The Mac is back and better than ever. It was a truly amazing show from start to finish. The new songs had such power that they elicited as much roars from the crowds as the old favorites. I have never seen the band playing and looking so great Rated "5" by Frank Naccarato I have attended concerts now for about 41 years starting with Joan Baez in the village in 1962. By my best estimates I have attended something like 700 concerts over the years (even the Beatles). I cherish my top 10 list like a treasure to never let go of. Well, last night The Mac broke into my top 10!! I was absolutely flabbergasted! I couldn't believe the passion, the emotion, and the power of the band. I hit the jackpot in many ways...I was way up in the nosebleeds (those of you who know MSG - section 406, row G). Halfway through the concert, a voice behind said, "would you like to sit on the floor?" I didn't know WHAT to think. I turned and it was an MSG official. As soon as the initial shock set in, I said "YES!" They took us downstairs, backstage and entered the arena on the floor on the right of the stage. The concert had been great even from the blues up to this point, but 35 feet from the stage was an entirely different world. We just couldn't believe what had happened to us! Well, Mac was simply, and literally, unbelievable and so was the Garden crowd - both seemed to feed off each others energy all night. You could tell that the band knew this was a magical night - the surprised looks on their faces and their many thank yous. Lindsey was absolutely wild on stage and the obvious chemistry between Stevie and Lindsey was heartwrenching - I don't mind saying that tears were shed at several points - both for the emotional vibes in the air and the sheer joy at what we were experiencing. I have rarely, if ever, seen the ENTIRE Garden on their feet jumping, clapping and singing (although, when the Rangers won the Cup they were definitely jumping and clapping, but NOT singing). On the floor, EVERYBODY was dancing and singing - totally soaked in sweat. Mick was himself, of course, the whole night, especially during his drum vest solo. As always, Stevie's mesmerizing voice totally enraptured the crowd who sang along with so many songs. As the night progressed, both the band and the crowd became more and more caught up in the frenzied atmosphere and by the time they did "Don't Stop" for the second encore, all hell broke loose and they literally did "bring down the house". I looked around and the thousands of people were ALL dancing and singing and clapping and screaming - stage lights flashing - "...yesterday's gone...". This was rock heaven PLUS...For the last encore, Stevie sang a beautifully touching romantic song (the name of which escapes me - but said something about it being hard to say goodbye) and I cried again - it was so, so beautiful. I will never forget this night. I don't care what any critic says, I know what the crowd and the band felt last night and it was a very personal connection amongst all. I left the Garden sad that it had ended, walking on weak legs, but feeling so fortunate to have witnessed a night like this. Do I sound like I enjoyed the show? GET A TICKET NOW! by Frank aka snwriter I scalped a 1st row OFF the floor ticket to MSG last night for face value (I waited until 8:15ba. Yeah, the set list was the me. But they were definitely the hottest and most active they've been so far on the tour and this is my fourth time. I'm thinking maybe they were thinking, "well all the big critics will be there," but the New York Times actually reviewed the NJ Meadowlands show a few months back so I'll doubt they'll review it again. Anyway, Stevie was the most improved player. Her voice was incredible and sounded better in that it is an indoor venue. There was no hand fluttering, which was about all she did when I saw her months ago at the other shows. She was clapping wildly during "Second Hand News." The end of "Rhiannon" was almost as intense as the live 1980 album. There was way more floating around the stage during this song than earlier in the tour. "Beautiful Child" was transcendant and ended with a great deal of ad-libbing. "Stand Back" had the usual amount of amazing twirls and she was literally screaming at the end. The "I'll follow you down" part of "Silver Springs" was incredibly intense and had most of the place singing with her. The only weird Stevie moment was when she dedicated "Landslide" to her and Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg. I mean, I'm a PR person, but my god, why dedicate this special song to her pushy publicist? Why not Warren Zevon, or a good friend or relative in the audience, or someone else? I mean maybe she really likes Liz and maybe Liz is great to her, but It just seemed so shallow. Anyway, everyone around me was saying how she hasn't lost "it" at all and how amazing she acted and sounded. Some people travelled from the UK and were dancing wildly and high fiving very young American teenagers in the audience. A guy near the front of the floor was breakdancing, cartwheeling and conducting audience singalongs during "GYOW" and "Stand Back." Lindsey received the most rousing love and ovation at the end of "I'm So Afraid" and he really played down the silly dogpaddling. But he kept holding his heart and seemed really genuinely moved at all the applause. He "boxed" with Stevie during "Tusk." But the funniest moment was when he belly-danced during the long conga-intro to "Stand Back." It was hysterical. He was definitely jazzed about something. The only negative note: his usual speech about the importance of spontanaiety when he was being anything but spontaneous. All in all a great show. I kept thinking that when they had built up such fever during "GYOW" and "SB" and "World Turning," why then go into "Don't Stop," which has been overdone by the whole political associations and all and wasn't even written by either of them. But then I bought and read the tour book (and I don't think this has been discussed) how much in the book they say the song "Don't Stop" means to them now and how appropriate it has been for this tour (not stopping despite Christine's decision to leave). I was also surprised at how much warm feeling they state for Christine in the book (only Lindsey even qualifies his love with how much he's enjoying the new musical freedom) and how bummed they are without her. Hell, why then don't they mention her at all in the show. Why not even invite her to the UK shows? Rated "5" by Mike aka mike42282 This was my first Fleetwood Mac show and it was amazing.
