I like to decorate my whole house if I"m having a party. One thing I sometimes do is make an outline on cardboard of a person holding a knife, and then I stand it up in my bathtub with a light behind it. (it really only works if you have a solid, not clear or opaque, shower curtain) The light will cast the shadow of the cut out on the curtain and it looks like there is someone standing in the shower with a knife. I would also rig up some fishing line to the light switch and run it underneath the door. When my guests went to the bathroom I would wait a moment or two and then pull the fishing line to turn off the lights. Once the lights went out they would see the shadow of the "killer" in the shower and freak out.

You can make bowls by cutting the tops off of small pumpkins and hollowing them out. It's good for dips.

One year, a couple of friends and I were all living in the same apartment complex, and one was assistant manager - so we threw this huge bonfire in a field behind the complex for Halloween, and everyone that lived there came.

We didn't have a lot of money for decorations, because there were several hundred people to feed instead, but I am a big fan of Dia de los Muertos art and crafts, which are all about handmade, so we made a bunch of luminarias out of tin cans - you get a soup can, wash it out, punch holes in it with a nail to make a design, and pop a tea light inside. They are often made with paper bags, too.

A Dia de los Muertos theme would be pretty different (unless you live in the Southwest) and amuse your guests - sugar skulls and margaritas for all!

I went to a Halloween Party once and the inside of the house was so cool - they cut open black trash bags and put it over all the walls in the house. Then they wrote scary stuff on the walls and put black lightbulbs in all the lamps. It seemed like a lot of work, but you could just do a living room and it would be cool.
