Nick of time

DELTA Goodrem has picked up a habit in the US. It's cost her a pretty penny, is occupying plenty of her time and has kept her company through the long, lonely days of promoting her debut American album.

The habit: Stevie Nicks. When Goodrem is tired and promotional, she cranks up a Nicks album. She’s bought them all.

“My Stevie Nicks obsession is still going strong,” she says. “She’s so amazing. I’ve got every album she’s made. I haven’t had an artist I’ve done that with for a while. I feel like I’m a kid again with music. I feel new again. I feel that hunger to write great songs again. It’s the best thing and it’s all thanks to Stevie.”

Though Goodrem has had Fleetwood Mac foisted on her in the past by friends who wanted to introduce her to a band doing their best work before she was born, they fell on deaf ears. Until now.

“Something just clicked with me,” she says. “I don’t come from a musical background in my family, so it’s always been a process of self-discovery when I’ve found artists on my own or someone’s given me a CD. But the timing has to be right.”

Goodrem even planned a trip to see Nicks perform in Hollywood. But there was a slight problem.

“Dale (her stylist) booked it, but didn’t realise it was Hollywood, Florida, so we couldn’t go,” she says.

Listening to Nicks has awoken Goodrem’s creativity. She’s written dozens of songs, this time without a string of collaborators. Her American record label Decca has furnished her Los Angeles pad with an upright piano so she can create whenever she is inspired.

“I’ve been writing and writing. Instead of zoning out when I have time off I’m going straight to the piano, writing lyrics – all the things I used to do,” she says. “I’ve got my confidence back, I realise this is what I’m meant to do. When I’m writing and being creative I feel as if I can do anything.

“Being on your own is so isolating though I feel very independent again. I feel really creative. I really enjoyed collaborating on this album (Delta), but I want to get back to the piano and write (songs) by myself again. Get back to what I do.”

Goodrem’s American assault with a reworked version of her Aussie hit album Delta is bearing fruit. Her first American single, In this Life, has a new video and a slightly changed mix for US radio. It’s topped airplay charts in Texas and her label is hoping the rest of the country will follow.
She’s performed the song on Whoopi Goldberg’s talk show The View and has Letterman locked in for September.

“It’s starting to hit, but it’s such a big place it’s going to take a while,” Goodrem says. “I feel like a new artist over there at the moment. Most people’s journeys aren’t as disjointed as mine. Normally you release a record and tour it. That isn’t the way my life has gone. I just have to go with it.

“I have a commitment from the US company. It’s the first time I can spend time here; go and build the foundation, commit to it and give it a great shot. I finally feel I’m in the position to give the US some consistent attention.

“I don’t have any expectations. I’m just excited I get to sing all the time. There’s nothing but open ears of people wanting to listen. It’s actually a beautiful feeling. You only get to discover an artist once.

“Because I’ve experienced that before, I can enjoy it this time, because I was so nervous when I started out in Australia. Now I can come here and I know how it all works. I can just sing and enjoy it.”

Goodrem has added her 2002 chart topper Born to Try to the American version of Delta. It’s earmarked as the second single.

“We’ve been playing that a lot as we’ve gone around the US and it’s getting a good reaction,” she says. “I still believe that song is meant to see the light of day here. I feel it’ll be a special time, but the time isn’t right now. I want to start with In this Life and build from there. I’ve discovered recently that it’s all about slowly building a lifetime as an artist.”

Starting over again playing tiny clubs has inspired Goodrem’s next move in Australia. She’s going to make it personal, playing a theatre tour in January that will wrap up with a show at Kings Park on February 3.

And she’s prepared for the critics who will claim she couldn’t return to fill the stadiums she packed three years ago.

“The theatre tour is absolutely my choice,” Goodrem says. “We had the choice to go into arenas and put on a big show, but it’s not how I feel I need people to see me at the moment. Live performance is what I do best. That’s been my forte my whole life.

“The music industry has all these other things – like doing interviews, that’s something you have to learn. I’m good at evolving – to get better at these things. I make mistakes and I learn.”

She already has a setlist in her head and is looking forward to reconnecting with her home fans after spending most of this year in the US.

“Playing small shows you can be really personable,” she says. “It’s so intimate and I feel the need to connect with people on that level. It’s not as big a room. There’s a lot of freedom to be the artist I am, remind the people of the songs they’ve got to know.”

Delta Goodrem plays Kings Park on Feb 3. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster
from Aug 21.
