Default Musician Controversy

I just saw this comment from Neil Giraldo in a Pat Benatar biography. I laughed because it makes it sound like in the wake of the FM break ups, musicians world wide got into ethical debates with each other about whether or not band mates should sleep together, weighing the pros and cons and supporting their views with scientific evidence.

The new band eventually relocated to Southern California to work on their debut album In The Heat Of The Night and then hit the road. Neil said of their romance, "It happened probably a week into the tour. And initially it seemed taboo. Generally nobody had relationships like that in bands because it tended to destroy them. That's why the situation in Fleetwood Mac was so controversial among musicians. --- Overall it was a risky maneuver, but the success of our relationship has always been this sense of partnership, of each of us doing our part and our best."

I think FM are different, Christine and John and Stevie and Lindsay were couples before that era of the group came together.

And Christine and John were married.

I think Geraldo hits the nail on the head. So much of the talk about FM -- even from the fans -- centers on relations that broke up & had to keep working together. Hogwash. That isn't the crux. Millions of parents get divorced & have to "keep working together" as much as if not far more so than Stevie & Lindsey in the care & upkeep of children. That isn't the big deal in this context (it's a big deal otherwise). The big deal, as musicians themselves have always known, is romantic relations within bands. There's just something about being in a band -- & no one experiencing it has really been able to define it to others -- that does very weird things to a person's psyche, & the weirdness (Mick called it psychic jiu-jitsu) encompasses far more than romantic feelings -- it's also intellectual because you bring a huge part of your mental abilities into the situation as demonstrated by singing or playing music or songwriting -- think of how touchy people here on the ledge can be about posting a song they wrote or a recording they made or something they did artistically or intellectually. There is ALL of that mixed up in a huge, boiling cauldron in a band, & there is a proscription in most bands against romantic relations (even if that proscription is unheeded). It's for a very good reason, although it's hard for anyone to verbalize.

In a band, everyone's ego is thirty times more sensitive than it normally is.

I can see the musical sensitivity you're talking about. And the career pressure. I know Stevie said that when they first joined, she couldn't give Lindsey the emotional support he needed, because if he was working on a difficult guitar part and couldn't finish it, she couldn't say, "Oh, don't worry about it. Forget them." Since she was in the band herself, she wanted him to finish the doggone guitar part too. So, she couldn't play mate and bandmate at the same time. She said that caused friction.

Rolling Stone: "Lindsey was feeling depressed because he couldn't quite get some quitar parts down right. So we'd go back to where we were staying and he would really need comfort from me, for me to say, 'Its alright. Who cares about them?' You know be an old lady. I was also pissed off because he hadn't gotten the guitar part on. So I'm trying to defend their point of view and at the same time make him feel better. It doesn't work. I couldn't be all those things."

Useful Gadgets for the Aging:

St. Catharine's Standard:
http://www.stcatharinesstandard.ca/A...llespie%2c+Ian

It's estimated that one in six Boomers suffers from hearing loss. (And it's likely that three of the remaining five Boomers forgot to get their hearing checked, while the other two just don't like what they hear anymore and want to keep it that way.)

Aware that old and uncool Boomers are terrified of looking old and uncool, one manufacturer is marketing the devices as "not your grandfather's hearing aid."

"It's about self-expression," said Tom Powers, a spokesperson with Siemens Hearing Instruments.

Frankly, I think it's about "hearing." But as we all know, "self-expression" was big with Baby Boomers, even if those expressions were largely limited to wearing tacky tie-dye T-shirts and doing bad imitations of Cheech and Chong routines.

As an aging Boomer myself, however, I welcome any chance to remain hip and cool well into my late 50s and 60s. Beyond that, I'll gladly trade "hip and sexy" for "conscious and partially responsive."

But hearing aids are just the tip of the iceberg. I envision an entire line of health products aimed at Boomers who, despite the findings of science and full-length mirrors, still cling to the belief they're cool.

Here, then, is a partial list of hip health products for aging Baby Boomers:

Crutches and Canes: Choose from a large selection of adjustable crutches and canes, including "formal," "casual" and "really stoned." (The "really stoned" models feature hollow handles that are perfect for stashing a few joints or Viagra pills.)

Wi-Fi Walkers: Constructed from sexy carbon-fibre and featuring a macram‚ seat-cover charting the tangled sexual liaisons of Fleetwood Mac, these rockin' walkers allow you to cruise the sidewalk while surfing the Net. Combining wireless technology with the peace-of-mind that comes from knowing you won't fall down (although curbs can be tricky), the Evolution XX Wi-Fi Walker features an iPod hookup, Bluetooth headset and state-of-the-art GPS so you can find your way home.
