Default Mohegan Review...by me

Hey everyone!

I wrote this review of the Mohegan show for my school newspaper. I was wondering what everyone would think of it, so I decided to post it!

Keep in mind the editors only gave me a page....otherwise I could have went much longer.
Plus I sent in some pictures I took. They didn't come out so fabulous....

Well here is my review.

Music as Enchanting as Persona

Frequent readers of my music reviews must know my love for all things Fleetwood Mac. In addition, that includes Singer/Songwriter Stevie Nicks. A year after seeing Lindsey Buckingham -Fleetwood Mac’s Guitarist- live, I was able to see Stevie on April 20. Stevie opened her set with one of her most popular songs, “Stand Back” from her album The Wild Heart, 1983. Her first three songs she performed are on that album actually. “Enchanted” was a great way to continue the up-beat aura of the arena, which was completely filled with fans. Many women were dressed in their ‘Stevie-wear’ as I like to call it. Stevie did not fail to deliver when it came to her signature style either. Her gold shawls, long flowing dresses, and high boots were present as always. A few songs later into the set-list came a Dave Matthews Band cover, called “Crash Into Me”. She has been doing this song since September 2007, and once I heard, I had to download the original. I fell in love with the original when I heard it, and Stevie did the song much justice. The next string of songs were mostly her hits with Fleetwood Mac. These songs included “Rhiannon”, with an extended piano intro. This sounded very similar to the version on The Dance with Fleetwood Mac. “Dreams” came next, and everyone was on their feet once again. I think this is one of her strongest performances of this song-after hearing older versions with and without Fleetwood Mac. “Gold Dust Woman” was a favorite of the night for me. Her vocals on this song are much better than they were on the original 1977 recording, and the reduction of ‘loose’ sounds on the track made it much better and more enjoyable to hear. During a song from her 2001 CD Trouble in Shangri-La, “Sorcerer” she was very much into it, and even brought out the air guitar. “Landslide” was hands down the most touching song of the night. Stevie -in true form- dedicated this to her late father…á la 1997. In the background pictures of her and her family flashed while she worked her way through the song. As a viewer of this, I can say without shame that this performance almost brought me to tears, like no other concert that I have ever been to. My absolute favorite song of the night was “How Still My Love” from 1981. Her outfit, the smooth jazz vibe of the song, and her vocal were just perfect. Not to mention the way she twirled her shawl around ‘like a whip through the air.’ For an encore, one of her signature solo songs “Edge of Seventeen” was played, along with a Led Zeppelin cover, “Rock and Roll”, and the beautiful self-penned “Beauty and the Beast”. At first, I was weary about a long version of “Edge”, but it was very strong. I was surprised how she was able to pull of the Led Zeppelin classic, and she did it in true Stevie fashion, with a top hat, twirls, and all. Her final song, “Beauty and the Beast”, was quite moving as well. A long black velvet dress accompanied with a classic hairdo completed Stevie’s fashion statement that compliments the song. Her vocals sound much different from the original, but it was still a solid performance.
The one problem I have with Stevie is that she has such an extended catalogue of songs; with Fleetwood Mac, solo, and even unreleased songs. Yet, she has played the same set-list since 2006. Then when she adds new songs, they’re covers. I did however feel her vocals were as amazing as ever, and really enjoyed how she interacted with the audience and told us stories of how her songs came to be. Her long black dresses and mystical movements entranced the audience into the concert, and the world that is Stevie Nicks.

I was thinking that the whole time i was reading. AND I never actually realized what a showcase the wild heart album seems to enjoy nowadays. StandBack,Ifannyonefalls, enchanted, batb.
ALSO, How Still My love is my FAVORITE thing this time also. the dance at the end, the music this time and the way she sings it is just-so-cool.

Annyway, remember your fandom when you become a reviewer for a big newspaper or magazine! We need people "ON THE INSIDE"

Hey everyone!
I want to say thanks to everyone for the support and the nice comments about my review.

the constructive criticism was helpful, and i wanted to add about the FM possible reunion and summer tour and soundstage, but I was limited in space.

But anyways, the JERKS in my school paper, the editors of the A&E section and the beyotch editor in chief [whose name happens to be rhiannon...go figure ] hate me so they FCKED up my review.

read it here on the website.
heres the thing, i dont care if my personal info, or any of THIERS For that matter is given out on here by posting it.
but i do have a request for some of you,
if you read the changes they made and feel that my original is better, could you please email the editor in cheif account about it. It really hurt my feelings a lot to see my article screwed up so much, and if you guys, who get both Stevie and me, do it would be an even greater meaning to me than if someone at school or my mother [who is BS btw] did it.

The email is:
[email protected]

the newspaper is:
http://www.tantasqua.org/THS/docs/to...e2Edition8.pdf

I am on pg 12-13
and truthfully, all other things in it except two other articles are crap.
[and a hilarious cartoon, and theres a picture of me at the dance in the end too ]

but seriously, if someone here could even post here and tell me why they changed so much, it would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much
Christine

But Christine, I don't see a big change from your original. I mean there is a part at the beginning where you talk about your love for the band and they changed it to "that affection includes" but I didn't see any major changes. The placement of the columns is a little confusing in the middle section. For instance, you talk about Landslide being a "hands down" favorite, but you have to look for the "down" where the sentences connect. That was the only part that I thought my tend to threaten the flow of your words, but even that was minor.

I know you worked really hard on your review and I'd hate to see some insensitive editor chop out the descriptions and imagery that you used. So, I would definitely write in. But I didn't see the part that they messed up and it looked like all the careful history (like song origin, album information and year of release) and details you gave us made it into the paper intact. Forgive me if I'm missing something.

Michele
