does it all have to be done at the same time or do you have to keep going back?

I can't chew on that side now either. It's so sensitive to pressure or biting down. It's like a dull, throbbing pain- but only if I chew or bite down. No swelling at the gums, no bleeding, so I don't know if it's infected (I doubt it, but you never know). Does this go away with time?? I've never, ever had a post-procedure problem with fillings or drilling before.

I have an appt with him tomorrow evening. Gawd, the thought of him ripping out what he put in on Wednesday and starting all over....he's going to have to sedate me, I 'm sorry. Even if I take Ativan before my appts, I'm all tense and a-scared.

so it ONLY bothers you when you eat or chew?

no out of the blue pain? anything waking you up at night? anything bothering you if you drink cold?

can you make it hurt by just putting your teeth together? (without food). if you can't, try rubbing and grinding your teeth side to side. does it hurt with that?

also, when you bite together (without food) do you feel like that's the first tooth that hits?

when the pain comes, does it go away pretty quickly (1-30 seconds) or does it linger for 5 minutes +?

does anything make it feel better? cold, heat, over-the-counter meds? or have you had to take anything for it?

answer these then i might have you try a few tests. I have an idea of what it pooooosssibly is, but i'll wait for your replies

Michelle,

I had the Zoom whitening process done a few months ago, and I'm just curious, WHY DOES IT MAKE YOUR TEETH HURT LIKE THAT?

several factors could contribute to sensitivity after the Zoom! whitening procedure.

did you use a pre-treatment (prescription strength) toothpaste? if so, how long and did you just spit the TP out vs. rinsing?

if you didn't use the toothpaste, that is more than likely the reason you are having sensitivity. also if you didn't just spit it out, that can cause discomfort too.

other factors such as recession of the gums (which i doubt you have at such a young age, but possible) and any unrestored cavities could cause discomfort as well.

your teeth have millions of tubes inside of them. These tubules are where all the stains and bacteria gets stuck and causes your teeth to be darker over time (granted, some people just have naturally dark teeth, but if it's due to stain, this is why). coffee, tea, smoking, red wines, soy sauce, red sauces, blueberries-all of these things over time will stain your teeth and you can't get it out. any whitening procedure/chemical flushes out that stain, but it leaves those tubules wide open with nothing protecting them. This is why you have sensitivity. Usually they will put fluoride on your teeth for approximately 5 minutes. this helps with discomfort, but the primary purpose is to prevent further stain from getting back in the tubules. problem is, it takes about 48 hours to completely harden.

how long ago did you have the procedure done. an average for our patients to have pain after zoom is about 12 hours. we have had other patients experience it longer, but that's kinda the general rule.

if it's been over a week and you're still having sensitivity, i'd call your dentist.

stay away from extreme temperatures, acidic foods/drinks (orange juice, lemons, apple juice etc) for a while and see if it gets better. if they gave you the prescription toothpaste, continue to use it, but try to not rinse it out, just spit. if they didn't, make sure you're using toothpaste for sensitivity (i like sensodyne) and do the same. stay away from whitening and/or tartar control toothpastes until your sensitivity goes away.
