the B side of some Fleetwood Mac single

Back in the day, Silver Springs was one of those rare songs that you just couldn’t obtain. It was on the B side of some Fleetwood Mac single and none of the stores around me had it. There was no internet, no ebay or amazon.com to order it from. Nobody had it. So, all I could do was enjoy those moments when it was on the radio. More often than not, I spoiled the radio moments, searching frantically for a blank (or sparable) cassette tape to record the song on while it was playing. In the end, I had about a dozen partial versions of the song. On the CD ‘The Dance’, Fleetwood Mac included a live version. Nice. But, not the same.

But there, sitting in the glow of the Christmas tree, fuzzy and numb, the first strains of Silver Springs came through my earphones, and I didn’t recognize it, I don’t know that I ever heard the beginning of the song, and I had forgotten I added it when I downloaded all that music, and it was weird. It was one of those moments where everything just is kind of in place and I was sucked back in a kind of time warp to Christmases past numb and dreamy, listening to Stevie Nicks on my walkman in the creaky wooden chair at the house in Rosemont, looking at the Christmas tree.

The song ended and I was back in real time. But, funny how the season and certain stimuli can just do that to you, huh? I’d have that song play, but the little music thing I have doesn’t list that version, only the live one on The Dance. So, if you want to find the real version, you have to find it yourself (hint: iTunes has it).
