What if John Wayne had decided to do some Shakespeare?
PRINCE HENRY Peace, ye fat-guts! lie down; lay thine ear close to the ground & list if thou canst hear the tread of travellers. FALSTAFF Th'Hell I will! Start slappin' leather! ![]()

Having seen Wayne play Genghis Khan was horror enough for me thank you.
But, speaking of unusual roles for Wayne, his appearance in King Of Kings with his "surely this maaan was the son of gawd" line is definitely a highlight of that film for me.

If Howard Hughes hadn't ok'd filming in radioactive Nevada sands, ya never know...The Duke might've lived to give King Lear a go.

Sorry I can't do the Shakespeare lingo ...
But here's some trivia from John Wayne movies ... RE: The Cowboys: Shortly after the film's release, Bruce Dern received death threats for his character killing John Wayne by shooting him in the back. When John Wayne informed Bruce Dern that Dern's character would shoot Wayne's, he told Dern that audiences would hate him for it. Dern responded by saying, "Yeah, but they'll sure love me in Berkeley." RE: The Sons of Katie Elder This picture marked the return of John Wayne to work after having a cancerous lung removed just four months earlier. He insisted on doing all his own stunts to show the public that the illness hadn't slowed him down. The film was shot in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. When he wasn't working, John Wayne often had to breathe using an oxygen tank. When John Wayne is dragged into the river, you can hear a child calling out, "Dad!". This was his three-year-old son Ethan Wayne, who was watching off camera. |
