Default October 17,2007: Back To The Drug Daze

Back To The Drug Daze
Published October 17th, 2007 Celebrity and entertainment

The history of rock ‘n’ roll is filled with tales of fights, booze, sex, and drugs. It’d be hard to listen to stories about the past days of rock ‘n’ roll without hearing about how Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx was declared dead after an overdose, then brought back to life by two adrenaline shots, or the rumors that Keith Richards had his blood replaced in order to cure his heroin addiction. Rock ‘n’ roll’s excesses have been documented to the point of exhaustion, and many of these stories have become little more than jokes to be used as fodder in movie parodies.

But, in Classic Rock Magazine’s “The Drugs Issue,” the stories don’t sound so clichéd. The stories of drugs and excess covered in the issue are, for the most part, already well known. But rather than just rehash these tired tales, the magazine lets the people who experienced the excess do the talking, taking a neutral view and allowing the stories to speak for themselves.

The best feature in the magazine is “Sex, Lines And Audio Tape,” which tells the story of the creation of Fleetwood Mac’s classic Rumours album. Writer Joe Bosso covers Rumours’ production from beginning to end, as well as the tension and drug use that pervaded the recording sessions. Using accounts from producers, studio engineers, managers, and snippets of past interviews with members of Fleetwood Mac, Bosso describes the effects that the fights between Fleetwood Mac’s separating couples (John and Christine McVie, and Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks) and the “mountains” of cocaine in the studio had on the band during the recording sessions. The first-hand accounts from the producers offer a detailed, yet detached view of the tensions and emotions in the studio, a mix of concern and fascination as the pressure of making an album both pushes the band together and threatens to tear it apart.

This issue’s other gem is the “50 craziest, sleaziest, death defying-est drug stories ever!” These drug stories include Keith Moon ingesting a full bag of pills in a matter of seconds, Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers shooting up on the steps of the Pasadena police department, and Ted Nugent flushing a dealer’s stash down a toilet and beating him up before throwing him at the feet of a security officer. And though the mention of such worn out legends might make readers roll their eyes, each is excerpted from various biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs, giving these tired stories an authentic and invigorated voice

I bet they are reusing an article from a previous Classic Rock Magazine issue. I'm almost positive that I have that same article in a back issue of Classic Rock. I hate when magazines do that and can't come up with a new article.
