Album: The Spill Canvas: Denial Feels So Good

The Spill Canvas’s second EP, Denial Feels So Good, was ultimately bittersweet. Denial Feels So Good held so much potential, yet this potential was cut short due to the disappointing length of the album. This indie-rock, alternative/pop-rock band, released an album with only five songs that add up to less than 20 minutes worth of an overall mellow sound with a similar flavor to Dashboard Confessional and Further Seems Forever.

Denial Feels So Good consists of two cover songs, Fleetwood Mac’s “Gold Dust Woman” and Donovan’s “Catch the Wind,” a remix or what you could call a spiffed up version of the previous single, “Staplegunned,” and two original tracks. A band whose lead singer’s roots lie within Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was winning over fans with their meaningful lyrics and memorable sound, released an album that most likely will dash their high expectations. It seems as though the music stops in your stereo as soon as you popped it in.

The biggest letdown was feeling as though you were gypped of what could have been a great album, but instead you’re left thinking to yourself, “That’s it?,” while there is only two new, original songs. I thought to myself, “This talented lyricist couldn’t have possibly run out of material yet, or maybe he was faced with one heck of a writer’s block.”

Denial Feels So Good was not a total letdown from start to finish. The Spill Canvas has not lost its abilities in channeling emotion and passion through their music. The band voices everything from the inevitable emotion of love, and frustration to hesitation and desire. The album has no sugarcoating to spice up the band’s image or to create a modified sound. The Spill Canvas delivers raw, pure and authentic music as usual that any fan can truly appreciate.

Even though The Spill Canvas provides a dose of sweetness on their new album, the supply runs out, leaving you with a bitter aftertaste. Fans of the album will find themselves asking for seconds however, and while this EP is only supposed to hold you over until the full-length album, it may have spoiled my appetite.
