Hey guitar-people I just had a quick question about if anyone knows if it is easier to pick (or at least bar) on steel string or nylon guitars. i have a cheap-o Indiana steel string acoustic-electric and it is impossible to play up near the 12th fret and im wondering if it is just because of the value or if a nylon is easier. thanks, Josh

My bass player bought an acoustic guitar for his daughter for Xmas, and I know that he was told to stay away from the Indiana guitars, that they were made too cheaply. The "action" - especially higher up on the neck, is usually the problem with cheap acoustics. Sam's Club has a Fender acoustic for.....$139(I think). It's okay, but again, the action is a little too high, up high on the neck. I think about the least you could get a decent guitar for is about $300-350. If you want acoustic/electric(ability to plug it into a PA or amp), I'd go with a Takamine, or Ovation. I have an $1300 Takamine, AND a $300 one. The action is virtually the same on both. And not that I'm trying to sell you anything, but I also have an Ovation Celebrity 257 electric/acoustic, burgundy finish, with hardshell case, that I'm going to put on eBay, at $300. If you're interested, PM me.

Wow, thanks a lot. I would be extremely interested if i didnt just spend half my bank account in a new transmission for my car... and i love the ovation style! Again thanks so much for the offer! If by chance you still have it in the summer (long time, i know, but that's when i start working) i would definitely be interested.

I'm in no huge hurry to sell it, so who knows.
I go through phases, where I try to sell off excess stuff in my life, on eBay and Craigslist. I only play electrics on stage anymore(with Fishman piezo[acoustic sounding] pickups installed - so I can get good acoustic sounds with my electric), so I REALLY don't need three acoustic guitars anymore. That's why I was wanting to sell one.

I hear ya, I'm still in the stage where I'm trying to find my perfect fit. I've had a range of cheap guitars just trying to decide what my style will be. I'd still like to give acoustics a fair chance which is why i want a decent one!

I would say it easier to play barre chords on an acoustic instead of a nylon string. Normall the nylon strings have high action (the height of the string from the fret board) and they also have wider necks...so that could be tougher for you depending on the size of your hands, as well as your finger strength.
