Default a producer...or alone again

What do you guys think. Should Lindsey hook up with a producer, like he planned to, or going for the ultimate solo-effort again......doing it all by himself.

Really depends on who the producer is. If it was Richard Dashut then I'd be all for it, but I think UTS turned out just great without a producer so I wouldn't mind him going for something like that again.

I don't know, I have a feeling only Lindsey really knows what to do with his own music. Unless it's a guy with the same 'visions' as Lindsey, sure, bring him in, but Lindsey could do just as great a job himself then. I'm curious whether bringing in a producer was his own idea or the label's idea. Maybe they are trying to steer into a little more commercial direction, since UTS was sort of Lindsey's indulgence? They tried to target UTS a little more towards the general audience, but Lindsey would have none of it (thank God), so maybe that's why they are now requesting a producer instead of letting him do it all by himself?

A new producer is very risky in my opinion. It could enhance Lindsey's own skills, but it could very well kill the entire album also. We know Lindsey can do it, so I'm kinda hoping he will do it all himself again.

Excuse my lack of knowledge,

But what exactly is the producers role anyway? What decision making authourity could that person actually hold over Lindsey Buckingham.

What advantage would paying a producer anyway when lindsey is one

From Wikipedia:

In the music industry, a record producer (or music producer) has many roles, among them controlling the recording sessions, coaching and guiding the musicians, and supervising the recording, mixing and mastering processes. This has been a major function of producers since the inception of sound recording, but in the later half of the 20th century producers also took on a wider entrepreneurial role. These activities comprise record production.

The music producer could be compared to the film director in that the producer's job is to create, shape and mould a piece of music in accordance with his vision.

So, you see, it's kind of important that Lindsey and whoever's going to produce are on the same wavelength, otherwise it could turn into a disaster. Now, I don't think Lindsey would work with someone that he didn't respect or has too many differing ideas, but as I said, is bringing in a producer Lindsey's idea or the label's request? I think that makes a world of difference.

I couldn't really imagine Liddy working very well with a producer. I say let him go it solo.

I'd say LB is best in charge of the music of LB, especially coming off a high-water mark such as UTS.

Producer-extremes differ quite notably anyway. There's the type that's in the studio for ten minutes a week to listen to a track, then they say something like "cut out the middle eight, we want it to be all about the chorus" and get the hell out of there.

Then there's the 20 hours in a studio per day type like Martin Hannett. Full of eccentric ideas and totally focused on everything he's doing. If you try to get his attention for a second he'll scream something like "WHAT THE F*CK DO YOU WANT NOW?!"

Now we all prefer Lindsey to work with the latter type but in truth the results from something like that could either be heaven or hell.

There's that saying, "too many cooks spoil the pot." I agree with this when it comes to Lindsey. He has the ability and the artistry to be a great producer. No one else can produce Lindsey's music better than Lindsey.

Default Producer

I'd like to see Lindsey with a producer like Matt Serletic that has a good track record of taking good songs and making great songs out of them. If you take a look at any Rob Thomas or Matchbox Twenty record, anything that's a collaboration between Thomas and Serletic is a masterpiece of pop-artistry. That being said, I'd like to see Lindsey with a few Hits under his belt. I think he deserves it, and despite not caring so much about charting, I really do think he'd feel better about himself and his "competition" with Stevie Nicks if he had a couple of good singles that top the charts. Down on Rodeo or Bleed to Love Her would have been a good ones, but they weren't promoted as singles at all, despite the idea that they might have done REALLY well with a little airplay.

I'd only be down for a producer with Lindsey if it was Richard Dashut.

Well, I say that, but really, I like Lindsey's records however it is he decides to serve them.

Well, I think lindsey's best album could have been Gift Of Screws, a batch of songs that were coached by Rob Cavallo. He did a good job: make them rock quite energetic, and still keep LB's qualities in front. That's proven to be working well.

I would like to see him work with a producer that conquers with him: a counterpart. Jack White, Rick Rubin, Jim O'Rourke. Rocking record or a more folk-avantgarde thing, either way.

I really like Jack White.. I just don't think that would work out.

Well, I think it could work....Electric-acoustic battles that morph into songs, deconstruction of already (almost) finished material-I bet White and O'rourke are specialists in such a task.... Rick Rubin would be the one that gives Lindsey Orders, I don't know if he's waiting for that......

Yes, yes, yes!!!! I definitely would like to see Lindsey working with a good producer. I think if he had someone who would challenge him musically at this point, he may well produce the best work of his career. I really believe he still has that in him.
